Are there perhaps 20/30 choons that need a rest? So with me being out of the loop, as to what's played on a regular basis, i'd like to see4/5titles from people that have heard enough of a certain choon, (not the one you hate and don't ever want to hear. When I DJ at our do's, I play oldies in the late spots coz thats want the paying public want, I get request after request for them, when I do early spots I play lesser known records, I love the oldies and would listen to them all the time, they are timeless to me and earnt to right to be played

The simple answer to the original question is......YES - loads, too many to mention

If it's in my collection I don't really want to hear it and if it isn't I don't mind. After 40 years as far as trad. 60's Northern sound is concerned played out oldies and newies tend to be not much different really with some exceptions.

Thanks for the replies folks. Would appreciate some more lists (that's what i aked for) Interesting that some of the titles are the same old story Vibrations, Millie Jackson. Don't know Sidney Barnes or Stanky. Surprised about Bobby Womack and Johnny Howard. The Dells and Jack Montgomery were fairly hallowed choons a few years ago Not sure about the B side of Jack M i have it and ive played it i know it's not as good as the a side.I wondered if some played out oldies were regional.

I have no problem with " overplayed " oldies . If a familiar tune comes on , I do not class it as an inconvinience to the enjoyment of my night , I accept it for what it is / was - a contribution to why I have an involvement in this scene of ours ......

Consider this : the playing time of / for the majority of so - called " overplayed " oldies , is at the most 3 minutes : the act of sex can last just as long , but I doubt many people will turn their noses up and say " Oh no , not that again " ......

The simple answer my friend is 'yes'.................however, before we start the debate again & i get verbally burnt at the stake, there is a time & a place & just because i dont want to hear them every week doesnt mean i dont actually like & appreciate them. If its an oldies doooooooooo then fill ya boots, if its a regular Nighter then i would prefer to hear less obvious tunes played........Rod makes a very good point, there are very few totally unknown records these days, most have had an odd play at least, but i'm partial to an odd oldie, just would prefer for DJ's to dig deeper........my fave at the moment is Eugene Smiley & the Essence of Love............now i had literally almost totally forgotten this record, now that to me is the Essence of a great oldie.

I agree, but it is possible to play Tamla Motown and NOT fall into the predictable trap of same old, same old. A couple that spring to mind are Shortly Long - Out To Get You, Stevie Wonder - Hey Love and The Temptations - Fading Away.

Overplayed oldies-

Depends on what you call an oldie? or definition of an oldie?

You can have overplayed newies as well - like Ellipses / Hop skip and jump etc

Id love to see DJ playlists where they play a completely different set from one do to the next

I love the challenge of "across the board" as this usually means carefully working one genre into another which imo is a skill.

Its easy to play a set of Classic oldies- Mixing them up with other genres and keeping people happy is much more of an skillful objective move In my lowly opnion.

One of the main reasons I don't DJ that much anymore is because of the exspectation and demands of the dance floor which in most cases is the same old same as, to be frank it bores the shit out of me to be honest, the odd spot where you have a free hand on the selections you play are few and far between but worth it when you can express what you are really about musically, far too often we hear it's what the paying public want but do people not get fed up and bored with hearing the same tunes week in week out? We have over forty years of records and club culture to select from so there is really no need to play the same tunes constantly, would it not be fair to suggest that we can select and cherry pick all the best bits which is certainly my intention with the Droylsden allnighter in the future.

Personally I dont give a damn (see what I did there ) just glad to get out of the house I like the idea of across the board I love oldies and want to hear newer stuff as well . I go to a few scooter rallies and unless ther is a seperate northern room the soul they play is pretty dire and predictable .

Couldn't agree more Tezza but you forgot how they "Piss & Moan" whilst anything after 31st December 1969 is being played or if someone like Sam is on & that's after we've listened to 3 hours or so of Soul's equivalent to repetative strain injury, sad really, btw what time does Bingo start???

The well known promoter and bon viveur , Terry Sampson had a good view of the record selection by a DJ , which we can equate very well into this scenario ......

He stated that " In an hour , you can play 20 records : Make them 20 of your best "

Time for the DJs to adopt a similar battle plan - " play 20 of your best , not 20 like the rest "
