Yes im afraid it was me,but he did put me right off me stride,in fact he was a real pest he seemed to upset a few people,if i had not had Sarah with me the outcome may have been a bit different,but i doubt it i was enjoying the night so much.

I walked past just after he'd been deposited unceremoniously at the back but with much finesse i have to say, i looked right at him and smiled..he looked shell-shocked..priceless ....what a blinding night all-round and everyone in tune and determined to have a top night ! Except Charlie but a night he'll remember methinks

Bit of a late post due to the usual post allnighter 'catch-up' of domestic tasks as a result of being capable of relatively little on Sunday..

What a fantastic night!! Made a little more interesting than usual for myself and travelling companion Mr Ray Mahoney (of 'City Club Peterborough' fame- plugplug) as we had the honour of escorting Mr Rico Thompson of THE BALLADS from his hotel to the 100 club (and back again!)

Now this was indeed a great opportunity, as not only did we get to meet and chat with Rico and find out about his career and quite a bit about his life, but also I was able to record an interview with Mr Thompson with the recording and general calming help of my good friend Ray, from which I now have precious resources to plunder for the purposes of my premiere as a plundit! Enough said for now.

Having run over a bit with the fascinating conversation we were having in the bar of the Tavistock Hotel, we arrived at 100 about 10am, and Rico was immediately engaged in conversation with an adoring fan. This continued, so I didn't need to worry about introducing him or entertaining him.. he is such a friendly man, that people were just drawn to him. He enjoyed the people and the music a great deal.

Personally I also had a really good night. Music was top-notch; especially enjoyed Keith Money's & Butch's sets. However I was chatting a lot not dancing so much.. it was good to see Nina & Lenny, happy 40th Nina. She still looks exactly the same as the photo up on the event 'look-forward' last week, despite all the 5.30am starts That's what clean living does for you.

Too many friends old and new to name, but must say great to see Tony & Lesley-Ann, & Barry N, oldoldold friends from Bournemouth, always lovely to see chaps like that popping up at 100 anniversary, who you haven't seen for ages.. that's WHY I go to the anniversary- it's not just a great venue with good music, it's one of the best social nights of the year.

Around 4am I was flagging and our guest was ready to be taken home, so off we went.. wish I could stay longer but it's that clean (ish) living you see... saving energy for my bicycle the next day (and the drive home).

Free record was a right treat, thanks Ady! In fact, thanks for everything!! I LOVE the 100 club, pretty much everything about it, the 20 years I've been going ain't the whole history I know, but it's the common thread through all of MY northern soul history. The 50-somethings have their Torch, Stafford, Wheel, Wigan, etc... for me it's 100 club and some others I could mention.. but none of them stayed the course..100 did! Better get off to bed before I get all awake again thinking about it.

Always a nice few lines from Michele. I must say (agree) it was a real pleasure to meet Rico and to spend time with him at the Tavistock and later at 100Club. He shook hands, hugged and chatted to so many people that I am suprised there haven't been many mentions on here about it!!?? Great interview Michele, some really nice questions and answers. Infact the recording of this interview is well worth a listen as it is as well as reading when it gets to print. Highlight of the night for me was (I think it was) Roger played Young Hearts "A little togetherness" Rico grabs my arm pulls me closer so I can hear and says "these are the Young Hearts, .... I like their 'I've got love for my baby'.... do you know that song?" We both immediately start singing it together!! It was one of those priceless moments!

Never thought Ady would let us all get our hands on that unreleased Jackie Day little beauty. And backing it with a superb mid-tempo number.

No complaints there. One great night from start to finish. Lots of peeps to catch up with and very nice to meet Bearsy in person.

Hopefully, quite a few will be at Rugby this Sat. I notice that Ady and myself clash over main & freestyle room times early am - so Ady you may notice your mainroom no's are down somewhat Tee! Hee!

Great music all night. But a few I particularly liked and remember were Butch.... Magicians - love let's try it again (Villa) & Saints - I'll let you slide (WigWam) , Mick Smith...... Jades - lucky fellow (Mode) , Ady...... Sammy Ambrose - welcome to dreamsville (Musicor) and Keith....... Johnny Praye - can't get too much love (SideWalk) & George Jay & Rockin Ravens - say that you love me (Dynamic).

A lot of new stuff also that I had not heard before.

The Scottish Crew were there in numbers and Alan Paterson DJ's for you all in November - which will be something special.

I must have missed the John Bowie.........but is it the alternate take without the strings & backing vocals ????.......its just a demo of the original if thats the case, as opposed to a 'funk' take.......tis great if thats the one, sounds earlier & much more deep & moody !!!.

BTW did anyone make a recording of the night...........I'd be very happy to pay for a copy of the soundfile or disc.

A few other sounds that I remember were played:

Soul Inc. - Proposal (Keith Money?), Shirley Edwards - Dream (Mick Smith), James Bounty - Prove yourself a lady (thought to myself "it's brill, havent heard that for ages, why have I sold?" and managed to get my hands on a nice demo literally 2 minutes later), Willie Tee - Walking up a one way street (Keith Money), that awful "burning sensation", diane lewis - you aint got a chance, etc etc...

Think your right there Tony. There were a couple. Not sure about the one he has, I have one with for tracks on it, all unreleased JB and there is a "Good Thing" version on it that is very basic but sounded more jazzy than funky..2 other decent tracks on it.

Must be a different acetate. Because it was definitely raw and smelt of funk. Weird, it had three or four tracks on it as well, blank black 10". Strange jazzy coincidence, maybe What sort of jazz is your version? Bebop or Cool? Or maybe Trad' big band swing? Stick a sound file up, if it is the same one it's a cracker

Nah you're right it wasn't jazzy at all. Not funky like Rick James either.

It was funky in a funky funk hot pants popcorn sparse corners funk in your face tricky syncopation head fack what the funk was that kind of way.

Funk, jazz or country and western? It was good to hear it what ever it was, and much appreciated as there are not many (any?) other DJs around who constantly and consistently air left field records of this quality

I must of heard a totally different record or someone put something in my drink (again). Probably didn't have an organ in it then either then. Remember it being very different from the Merben take....?

If its the one with the description here off Popsike from March '03 then its spunk not funk. Hence the confusion.

"John Bowie acetate-unreleased ! THE MERBEN SESSIONS 12 inch 33rpm acetate. No label. Four songs on a one sided acetate : "At The End Of The Day", "Help Me Pretty Baby", "Bad Luck", "You're Gonna Miss A Good Thing". Condition : looks G with semen-like stain on record, doesn't effect play. Plays very loud VG. 1/4 of acetate is chipped off at the beginning of first song which was released anyway. This was John Bowie's personal copy that survived all these years and I'm selling it for his nephew. When John Bowie recorded the MERBEN 45. four songs were recorded that day and all four songs are on this acetate. The two unreleased songs are just as great at the two that were released."

Great night....... love the single especially "My Life Is No Better" Larry Banks & Jaibi, been played quite a few times today. Will put some pics up later. We had a horrendous journey back to Scotland, signal trouble and were delayed on the tracks for 3 1/2 hours .... then our connection from Edinburgh to Dundee was cancelled meaning the next train was filled to capacity with other travellers and students returing to Uni..... myself Keith and Sandra eventually got home at 9.30pm....... but it was worth it. Well done Ady & the gang for making this a night to remember.

To be fair the last time I cracked one off on a record the stain did'nt look owt like that, although i'm used to cracking it into the armpit of a chessecloth shirt..
