In a sentence 'The Monthly Oldies All-Nighters'

From 74 went most Saturday nights then late 70's and early 80's my mates and l never went that much on a Saturday but never ever missed an Oldies...Went a couple of times after the previous nights oldies...Very sparse in there..I think the place would have lasted a few more years if it hadn't been for oldies What is your view on this??

Hi I stopped going to the Casino think it was March 78 and the place had really changed over the 5 years I will have a go, the first thing I must say the big issue for me was the love of stimulants and being a night "OWL", (I recently spoke to a consultant Psychiatrist in Addiction and we had a debate about stimulant addiction he spoke the same old rhetoric of it being a CBT issue, well I no through my own usage it is more addictive than Heroin as most stimulant users may abstain from their usage for 3 - 6 months when a opiate user finds this a impossible thing to achieve however if he/she is ready over the Ame period of time 6 months they have become very much in control (I despise the terminology CLEAN0 as it suggest that Drug users are Dirty or unclean and SMACK head Is another term that makes me wanna Pu>>.. lights out) any way this approach led to drug centres not PX Dex-amphetamine the consequence of this negative approach has a big impact on those who like myself suffer from chemical dependency and have to retort to Using Speed, back in 78 the powder used was crap up North Either Speckled or Pink which always was a indicator of Boric acid in its manufacture making more like MDA or MDMA which made into tabs and put a Dove on it created a twisted version of our scene Northern Soul Scene I remember in 75 Buying a couple of Hundred Blues (if you are a lot younger than myself, Drugs on the Soul Scene Mod scene and later Bovver Boys all came from one place and that was a clean Hygienic factory 1 in Notts and the other in Welwyn G C the SK&F factory was situated next to the Shredded Wheat Factory between the 2 companies the other being RIKER they supply a generation of colorful well dressed Bespoke working class with a few Ox-bridge types thrown in right up to 74, With Pills and Capsules, all the Caps had time release doses they are known as spansuals so Dexedrine would be in 5mg Tab but the 10 to 20 mg were in caps of different colors so 10 mg was Brown and clear 20mg was green and clear with SK&F on them, and the big one from there factory was Meathadrin¢Å¾¢ came in 1 gram phial tasted foul but for 5/- you were zooming and Riker made the Duraphat product that were Mose suited to most of us back then as they were Drimanal a chemical that included Amphet & Barbiturate a very addictive Drug) my point is by 78 it had been nearly 4 years that these factory drugs wee produced and in 76/7 the only factory manufactured Amphet was Dexedrine and its cousins some really nasty one Dthedrug)apps for period heavy flow and of course a little Hooter Pal the Benzedrex Nose inhaler brokenapat ripped up a swallowed, and I no theres a lot of you know what I am talking about, However it was due to this non manufactured in favour of Benzos and Ronnie Reg were locked up and we know that they would never sanction drug manufacturer but they had gone and the underworld (the Real one in London) paid our Ox bridge Mods to recruit under Grads to manufacture Sulphate that why from Huntingdon to Royston you could smell Cats Piss? but unfortunately the good stuff only reached the all niter cut to bits and in 76 we had a big bust on the M1 that had a big follow on impact and in 77/8 you had your Punk Rockers using all the speed in the Vortex Roxy and the 100 club? so along with the 9Times out of 10 or Joe 90 it must have been awful pretending that Wigen was like the early days and not comparable to the Cats Torch Wheel I will add all the Mecca's & Top Ranks Tiffanys from Streatham to the Royal to Stevenage Mecca the dot in Cambridge the Legendary California Ballroom In Consta noon Afterable the small pubs and chicken sheds of Bedfordshire Northamptonshire in to Leicestershire you all eat the whole lot So I am saying it was because it was a youth culture by the time I was 25 the 10 years that were my adolescence would last a life time,and still with Drugs DAVEKIL

Your Statement is actually a good point but as you say a few more years left , depending on your definition of few it would progress in 2 ways as a current black music scene HIP to HOP BREAK REE WIND! and Jack your body or what Ian & Colin were doing with pop Disco Hi Energy which helped the Gay scene Really Develop However would this approach save the Casino as the place burnt down?? so what is your view realistically and not imaginary DAVE( DO I CARE) KIL

What killed off WC ? a very interesting question indeed , young Philip ......

IMHO , I do not think that the demise of The Casino were caused by the MOAN . What I do feel may have contributed to the end , was the reluctance by the powers that be , to acknowledge the fact that a change in the musical attitudes and requirements of the scene - which had started around 1977 - was inevitably coming , and despite its' playlist diversifying around late 1979 via certain DJs , they preferred to adhere to the tried and tested WC musical policy , that had for so many years proven successful .

The demise of WC can be summed with reference to two old adages : firstly , the adhering to the value of " Do not fix it if it is not broken " , and the possible unwillingness to acknowledge that there was other music out there - " man cannot live by bread alone " .

The more likely reason for the demise of WC , was that it had - purely and simply - run its' course .

Ok a serious answer from me.........no honestly..........I last went to Wigan probably '78.............and to me then it was tired,stale and had turned into a caricature of the Nighter scene that I loved.By then we used to go to "normal" clubs round Manchester,and if we were" unlucky"go to Wigan.That would not have been the case with previous Nighters.............we would have been bouncing all week just at the thought of getting back to The Torch etc.

I was in a pub in Prestwich one Saturday night ,with my then wife,near to Wigans demise and Carts aked me to run him to Wigan, dropped him outside,didn't even get a twitch,and couldn't believe people were still in the baggy uniform,still queuing to get in to that scruffy old place.

Every club,unless it gets regularly "refreshed",goes stale,and Wigan for me had gone stale,died and like a fish was rotting from the head downwards.

In a nut shell........................its time had been and gone.

In fact I will go further than my last post,for me Wigan virtually killed my love of the music/scene and it wasn't re-kindled really until I got a phone call from Martyn Ellis,went to Trentham A/N and saw The Dells live that I did the Lazarus bit.(well it is Sunday so I'm allowed the Biblical bit!)

I think as well,I was getting older and wanted a bit of stability in my life,got married and moved to London in '81.............

But having said that there are a huge amount of people who's first experience of All Nighters was Wigan and will always have good memories of the place......................I suppose you could say I grew up...................and now I've regressed.

I don't subscribe to all these "Wigan went crap after....*insert relevent excuse*", what were bad years for some people were great for others, Station Rd had a 8 year run which is pretty good by any standards, ie how many other venues even came close to this level of attendance and longevity...... it must have been doing something right!.

It's just a case of the typical 'British disease' with these things, ie we love to knock anything thats a success.

Mr Binstanley who never had a true love for the music & it's people, only the glory & their money,proved by the Paul O'Gravy show, bloody hell wasn't he a Heavy Metal Dj before going all Soulful?? Then there was the media & Pye records who tried to commercialise it & cash in on it but only brought with it thousands of Soul tourists & finally Mods etc which made the true Soulies stay away or find alternative venues.

For me it was never the same after they let the camera's in & Frigan's Chosen Spew went on TOTP

Mind you the scenes even more devisive now, with Oldies Rooms, Rare Rooms,Modern Rooms,Crossover Rooms,Classic Club & Motown Rooms & worst of all R&B rooms, Jesus I even heard that at some venues they're playing Ska & Reggae, I could bloody weep,lets get back to one room & if you don't like the record being played then sit down & don't dance instead of bleating & whining or worse threatening the Dj or saying,"If you don't play some more uptempo soon mate we're f**king off" & that 2 or 3 hours into a nighter & after 3 midtempo tunes & yes I've seen it certain 1 room events.

Anyway the Casino's gone & it wasn't quiet as friendly & loving a place as most remember (That's was the drug's,Kool & the Kaftan,love & peace man & all that sh**e) there was an element of nasty robbing toerags, just ask Mick H & Steve Pownell, really it was an open sewer with a great dancefloor & some even greater music,filled with the rebels & dregs of society,most who went on to do well in life,some who are still my friends & a few who didn't make it to here, mores the pity.I don't really give a sh*t what killed WC, it was part of my life (A good part) a long, long time ago, I'm over it!!!!

I agree with your comments but I also think a major factor was the continued exploitation of the punters with little or no regard to the economic climate of Thatchers britain and the lack of respect or acknowledgement of the punters who were the life blood. I still dont understand to this day why they couldnt open the other half of the door and just let people queue without being crushed or having ones broken.

The running fights in the streets with the Punks didnt help much either. I always remember Dink who was the Mayor of Wigan's daughter being a soulie one week then a punk the next shouting at us in the street telling us we were all tossers !!!!!

I used to hate going into Russ's Records as he always seemed to think customers were a nuisance especially if they hadnt just gone in to tell him how great he was

Robbin' toe-rags was right,mate l had my badges torn off one week so l decided to use super-glue after that...a few months later somebody used a knife and cut the sides out of the bag....my pride and joy was that pale-blue adidas bag!

I agree with your comments but I also think a major factor was the continued exploitation of the punters with little or no regard to the economic climate of Thatchers britain and the lack of respect or acknowledgement of the punters who were the life blood. I still dont understand to this day why they couldnt open the other half of the door and just let people queue without being crushed or having ones broken.

The running fights in the streets with the Punks didnt help much either. I always remember Dink who was the Mayor of Wigan's daughter being a soulie one week then a punk the next shouting at us in the street telling us we were all tossers !!!!!

I used to hate going into Russ's Records as he always seemed to think customers were a nuisance especially if they hadnt just gone in to tell him how great he was

Webby talks about the monthly oldies but they also started bi monthly nighters, Motown Special, Detroit special etc. I remember going to one I would swear there was less than a hundred in. If a remember rightly they moved it into Ms because of the lack numbers. I only went cos I used to sweep up and got in for nowt but they were dire and I soon packed them in. Then of course there was the Wednesday & Friday soul / disco nights which were weekly

There also seemed to be a lack of effort from the DJs with things like Police Story, Hawaii 5 O, Joe 90 being played with as I have mentioned in a different post Mickey Mouse's concerto played by Soul Sam making me walk out in disgust, although i have to agree some great records did come out in the latter years

Punters also started travelling to other venues to hear different sounds

I went back for the many last nights which again left a bitter taste as they werent doing it for us but to squeeze every last pound out of the venue before it's final closure but remember being in tears at the end

A lot of my mates packed it all in as Northern had died with Wigan in their eyes but I carriied on and found the 80s reinvigourating with great tunes and clubs to attend and I'm still at it today ( yes I know I'm a sad old fxcker )

It was a fantastic club in its day but mainly remembered through rose tinted glasses which dont include the overdoses, the beatings from the bouncers that took place including a couple of rapes I know of, the rip off merchants, the rat poison sold as speed etc

All good points Steve but we can all speculate. What we should be doing here surely is asking the people that may have the CORRECT answer.. Mr Russ Winstanley, Richard Searling ( sadly Mike Walker and Harry Green are no longer with us ). Or someone that worked for Wigan council at the time. And i don't mean the local dustman before anyone comes up with a smart answer thanks !!

Robbin' toe-rags was right,mate l had my badges torn off one week so l decided to use super-glue after that...a few months later somebody used a knife and cut the sides out of the bag....my pride and joy was that pale-blue adidas bag!

i also rimember dink .i bumped in to her now and again over the years . i last seen her back in 84 when i put her up for the night' sadly dink didnt make it she died only a few months later down south

anyway like longy' i used to get in for nothing as well and was friendly with some of the staff . i fully agree with longy it became a circus the place was never out the papers for all the wrong reasons music and drugs where only one part of it .i stoped going back end of 76 but carried on visiting now and again until 78 .by then every scally in wigan was up there so god knows how many others from other towns where going up' by the time it closed i had grown up had kids and was working in london . some fantastic times at the old emp' but did i miss it' no chance . i also rimember helping out in russ w's shop with another lad in those days r serling was also in the shop behind the counter at times .always rimember him sending us to the news agents for mags and they wasant your music mags thats for sure :shhh:am going on a bit here time to go ive even forgot what the threds about:g:

allowing cameras in killed it, divis wanted to see what it was all about.....and jumped on the band wagon along with crap failed pop singers who could make a quick £ by singing an old northern soul tune.....and wigan djs were playing them.......they are also to blame but then this could be interpreted as running its course I suppose.

100% agree - went to the first oldies, never went to another. Thought that the Saturday nighters following an oldies were some of the best....
