Our old mate Fred Benson used to play a large number of records listed at the Riddings Soul Club- Scunthorpe at the same time the Wheel was on the go. Fred nearly always finished with a combination of the following.

What is impossible about Tell me It's Just A Rumour? Already said twice that it was available on an LP in 1967.

Who did discover Out on The Floor and where was it played then? Enlighten us.

I thought Brian was a DJ at the Wheel so how can you say he never went?

I was a record dealer at Nighters as soon as i learned enough, from, 1972 onwards any way.

I ran a shop from 1981 to 1995 selling records.

In the 10 years after The Wheel I met hundreds and hundreds of nighter people. I bought and sold 1000's of records. I once wrote to Frank Elson at Blues and Soul cos he was kind enough to mention me a couple of times in that magazine, in fact he once did an article on Leeds Central where I d.j'd at for a few years in the late 70's early 80's In fact he put a photo of myself and Pat Brady in the same article.

When I wrote to him I gave him a top ten of every all-nighter I had ever been to. He never published it and said words to the efffect I was pushing it cos all he had asked for were peoples favourite top ten NOT FROM EVERY PLACE THEY HAD EVER BEEN

I use to take stuff for the DJ's to play at The Torch etc.

I was probably the first guy to specialise in rare soul lists 1968 to 1975.

I supplied all the main DJ's and collectors Keith Minshul,Colin Curtis,Ian Levine,Dave Langley,Neil Rushton,Julian Bentley,John Manship,Ian Dewhurst, Soul Sam,Pep and 100's more.

Anybody who was serious about rare soul would know of me I actually disovered a lot more after the Wheel.

By the way I made a mistake on them lists Williams and Watson track we use to play wasn't" one good reason "It was Taking no chances had it cut on to an EMI disc try listening to it you can

As I said earlier in this thread - I love threads like this. I will second that statement . Without the involvement of Brian and his like minded associates , the scene would have not developed as it thankfully did .

As for " keeping the faith " , someone asked me recently why I was still " involved " and was as interested in the scene and records ( 2011 will be my 46th year of being " involved " ) , and my response was simple - it is second nature to me , and something I do not give a thought to , and which will hopefully continue to be so until I ( Harlem ) Shuffle off this mortal coil .

Hi Steve,

Apart from The Carrolls because we played the Peaches and Herb version were all played.

I tried to list tracks that were allniter tracks not put on the previously listed CD tracks.

I could go on and on and list stuff that was played but was also played in a lot of other clubs in Manchester etc.

We did play stuff on new release or import untill it spread to the rest of the clubs then dropped it.

I could go on listing lots more like DANNY WHITE AMD DONALD HEIGHT etc but I think I've listed enough.

Their's a lot of stuff we had but didn't play either because of the tempo or quality that became biig sounds later.

I don't know what your'e on but I'd go and get it checked out.

You obviously didn't go to the Wheel unless you went to the last one with ten thousand others( I wasn't there then)

I don't know where to start but lets have a go.

I have made one mistake on the list Barbara Lyn- Take your love and run THE REST 100% got played plus lots more.

I didn't mention Sandi Sheldon because it on the CD's and if you read the post I said I would avoid them already listed.

All but 1 0r 2 I played personally.

Out on the floor was played at the Cats, Chateau and the Wheel from 69 onwards.

Domino played as a new release,Queen of fools, I hurt on the other side (until I left),Darkest Days,Unsatisfied,Love reputation,Feels Good,your'e loosing me,Good things come to those who wait, In orbit,Sufferin' City and You ought to be in heaven were all big tunes at the Wheel.

A lot of the others you dispute Lady love, heartbeat, picture me gone,Invitation and few more were clasic tunes played from re lease and less so later on.

Robertr Banks, Fireman and The Kelly brothers I played quite a bit were never that big.

This is the thanks I get, The drifter and few more I played the last half hour.

Williams and Watson and Isley Brothers(I'm pretty sure) Phil Saxe played of the album (we didn't know at that time is was out on OKEH) I had left by then September 1970

The Adlibs Dave Godin brought down.

All but The Adlibs,Isley Brothers Joy lovejoy, please let me in and Darkest Days I had in my collection when I left so a lot didn't get played afterwards from September 1970 onwards.

I also had just got Emanuel Laskey and Moses Smith from a deal I done in May but didn't get until September so they got played on my last night.

Regarding CD's I don't recolect Bobby Paris or The Vibrations being played.

I still have the tape listings and will scan them when I get back to work. I am slightly surprised at some of the records that Swish doubts. They are commonly known to be not only Wheel records, but played at most Sunday night venues in East Lancs from 68/69 onwards.

I'm not getting involved in this discussion other than to say two things.

1. I totally agree with Brian Phillips and his recollections - let's face it, if he doesn't know, who does?

2. Spent one night there in the company of 'Docker' and Les Cokell - they spent 8 hours discussing soul music and I think I'd heard of about 5 of the records mentioned by them!!!!! It was after this 'memorable' event that I decided to start collecting seriously and got my first DJing job at Lord Jim's in Huddersfield.

Those were the days.

Also on the story of the Ad Libs - Franny O'Brien and John Bollen used to borrow Dave Godin's copy and bring it Lord Jim's, Vic Lounge, that pub in Keighley who's name I forget and other places in West Yorkshire for us to play.

Can I just mention a couple that really pull chain and are from early days that I think kind of got under my skin and enticed me to sample some R&B type soul. I still love Staxy soul today and I do believe my R&B leanings are as a result of tunes like this .

I had "No stranger to love" at the time but I never played it or I never heard anybody else play it at the Wheel.

Undecided I only got after the Wheel closed

Loads of the stuff Brian lists was on them, and I can confirm Tell Me Its Just A Rumour was on as was loads of the Rict Tic stuff. I also bought Queen of Fools off the policeman before I had ever heard it played out.

I know a few Wheel lads to this day and I have never been aware of a live tape from the Wheel. I would be really interested in one of those. The earliest tape I have is one I did down the Pendelum. Mark F and Pete S put it onto CD for me along with a load of Wigan and Blackpool Mecca ones.

I know a few Wheel lads to this day and I have never been aware of a live tape from the Wheel. I would be really interested in one of those. The earliest tape I have is one I did down the Pendelum. Mark F and Pete S put it onto CD for me along with a load of Wigan and Blackpool Mecca ones.
