Hi Guys

Looking through my records came accross a few Casino biggies in their time that never gey spins anymore where i go anyway.Take a look at these 5 for starters do they get any action nowadays all big dancers back in the day.

Sweet--Broken Heart Attack--Smash. late casino R.S spin covered i think as Chester Pipkin

Wilbur Walton Jr---24 hours of loneliness--123. Bat Brady i think

Tojo--Broken Hearted Lover---TEC. Searling again

Intros--Stop Look Listen--Jamie. May have been a Russ spin

Otis Blackwell--Its All over Me--Epic. Total Stormer

Out of those 5 i have only heard Otis Blackwell played recently the others not since the old days.Any thoughts out there on any of em could they stand up today i for one would love to dance to them all again.

I played the Tojo track for the first year at NMD, fantastic track that needs more play time IMO

Sweet - Broken heart attack started getting plays again last year, have heard it out a few times, have heard wilbur walton a couple of times this year too.

there are loads of things that had a brief kind of life at wigan and were then forgotten, shame really, a lot of them would go really well on todays scene.

The best thing is you can pick a lot of them up pretty cheap, knowing that sooner or later someone is going to remember it and start playing it out, then the price can only go up

Funny enough, we where talking about Sweet "Broken Heart Attack" on facebook the other day.

We where saying that this record used to be on sale on the stall in Manchester Market about a year before Wigan opened.

And the shock of hearing it covered up 6 or 7 years later by Dickie.

Only that Otis Blackwell was originally an Ian levine Mecca spin and predates the other selections by about 4 years.

Agreed Steve its a great dancer one of my faves as is the Intros, both a hundred times better than some of the played out oldies that get relentlessly churned out.

Found another The Jerms--I'm a teardrop, midtempo moody atmospheric track ain't heard that one in years also

Your right lots of early Mecca oldies and Cleethorpes spins became associated with the casino a good example is Rain --Out of My mind which was played at Cleggy first by Poke but which most soulies associate as a wigan sound due to it featuring in this Engalnd

What would you nominate as a few forgotten wigan oldies tracks Pete that you think would still punch the floor today

I think Searling played the Wilber Walton Jr track .My mate bought it from him. You know how Dicky used to like the rare stuff .The 45 Dicky played was one of the rare European issues, forgotten country. But it wasn't a U.S. issue. As for forgotten stuff, i think people like to keep em forgotten till they play them.

A few i've got, but not played in donkeys

Broadway Express C/U as Thats What Love Can Do -Richie Temple

General Assembly Sensitive Mind

Friendly People C/U as Lee Valentine Ain't Got Nothing But The Blues VMP

How about that Wilson Picket track on Chocolate City (Or something like that Brady used to play it)

DD Barnes Do What you Wanna Do (Belter!)

DJ

I dunno mate, I'll have to have a good think about it. What really bugs me is when people list a record and call it a "Wigan monster" and they're talking about something like The Lovells which only ever got played about twice. There's monsters and there's minor spins.

Forgotten Wigan dancers:

wayne cochran - i'm in trouble

peg leg moffett - the shocker

the shirtails - i want you to stay with me

john andrews - it's just love (well popular now but lay dormant for 30 years)

sammy lee - what goes around

sergio mendes - love music

just off the top of my head

With the exception of some of the things Pete & Deejay mention, none of the things mentioned thus far are really forgotten in the true sense - a proper forgotten oldie is something that when you hear it, its the first time in decades & it almost takes on the mantle of a newie again, I'm thinking of the likes of recentish reactivations like Lee Fields & Sandy Hadley, I had never heard Sandy Hadley before to be honest......but I know it was played. I would like to hear about things competely buried for years, that we all have literally forgotten.

Not Wigan but what about these:

Eddie Holland - Daydreamer

Roy C - Gone, Gone, Gone

Del Larks - Out of the In Crowd

Backstreet - Detroit Rythmn Section

Modern forgotten oldies anyone ?

Sammy Lee is a stunner BTW Pete.......

Think this was a Stafford spin for Pat Brady Dave, twas on Wicked I think.

Best Russ

I had never heard Sandy Hadley before to be honest......but I know it was played.

Russ, first time I ever went to Wigan, I did a tape which I listened to many many times so remember a lot of the tracks, Richard played Sandy Hadley, it was bootlegged by the time I next went which was 2 weeks later so it had a very short lifespan.

Another truly forgotten oldie is on that tape, maybe forgotten because it wasn't actually very good, Freddie Hughes - Don't You Leave - Greg Uh Rudy Records.

(Also included Holywood Persuaders, Nine Times, jades, Vicki Sue Robinson, Marion Love - Walk proud and pretty)

More forgotten Wigan spins...

Barbara Pennington - 24 hours a day - united artists (this has to be one of the greatest UK soul productions ever. Oh ok, soul production with an English person's involvement then)

Gloria & the T-Airas - I'm satisfied - Bettys

Sound of Excitement - Please don't cry - Catamount (covered up as The Newbeats, sounds more like The Newbeats than the real Newbeats)

Bill Brandon & Lorraine Johnson - Full time groover - Moonsong

Liberty - Girl you better wake up (inst) - BASF

Velvet Love - Symphony of dreams - UK Alaska (a 2 week Russ spin that was actually really nice if a bit poppy...well a lot poppy..still nice though)

Kev just because they are 70's releases doesn't mean they originated from the Mecca, Pennington obviously was did but Brandon & Johnson was a John Vincent spin at Wigan, Liberty was an Alan Rhodes spin at Wigan and was also played at Cleethorpes, how you going to know where it was played first when 3 venues have the same record?... I'll check the next lot with you make sure I don't make any more mistakes...

But you did quote "More forgotten Wigan spins".........................so where you say Alan Rhodes for instance ,i'd say Levine or Curtis.

Lets have some genuine forgotten Wigan spins.

Yvonne Baker was way before Freddie Hughes and Sandy Hadley.

Ernie Marbray had a very short life span at Wigan.

But..Barbara Pennington, this was a massive Wigan record, remember the 3rd anniversary, it was played about 3 times, so for me it's a forgotten Wigan sound.

The fact that I never went to The Mecca may have some influence over my selections

Think he may be right as it hadn't been booted at that precise time

Rubbish at knowing what was played and when i don't really care, so i'll have a guess at a couple.

The jokes on you

The joker went wild

Don't hear them out ever.biggrin.gif

Sandy Hadley? I would have thought if FH was being played ,SH had already been booted.YB some years before in timeline.

I'm too old for this....

How about that Wilson Picket track on Chocolate City (Or something like that Brady used to play it)

DJ

"How Will I Ever Know"..................played for a good while as "Brother Louie Brown" @ Wigan

Cheers Paul

I don't ever remember hearing that at Wigan but Russ always played the other side, the instrumental, covered as Bob & Earl band. I didn't even KNOW there was a vocal til the 80's

That's a big shock to me that the Strides was coved up at Wigan, having said that I only found out last year that "Love Music" was covered up at Wigan as well.

Marty Lewis - I can't do without you - Big Deal

AWESOME tune this one gets played out still think Pete CASPER has it on his excellent playlist from the last Kings Hall Nighter

I can see where you are coming from. I stopped going to Wigan just after the 2nd Anniversary, and didn't start going until late 78 .

For me 79 until the end was the best time to go to Wigan for the music, even if some Saturday Nights where dead.

I never did any of the Friday oldies.

Like Wigan will always be your No1 Club, The Mecca will always be mine.

Lydia Marcelle - It's not like you [ Manhattan ] Great forgotten femme side ,spun by Richard Searling .......

Great Choice.

Sorry Pete,i didn't realise we were discussing timings of boots, only when the above were played.
