..AFTER SOME GREAT TUNES AT THE WINDING WHEEL ON SAT NITE..I WAS AMAZED TO HEAR THIS BEING PLAYED!! SINCE WHEN WAS THIS NORTHERN SOUL? A ROCK N ROLL CLASSIC MORE LIKE.nOW I KNOW LR HAS RECORDED SOME GREAT SOUL TRACKS..BUT COME ON..WHATS NEXT ? SLADE?..CAN ONLY ASSUME ITS BECAUSE OF THE R&B INFLUENCE..BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF THE GREAT R&R SHOW AT WEMBLEY IN THE EARLY 70'S WITH THE ROCKERS DIPPING THEIR SHOULDERS..HANDS IN POCKETS..OH DEAR..THANKFULLY I HEARD mARGARET LITTLE 'LOVE WILL FIND A WAY' FOR THE FIRST TIME..FAITH RESTORED..

    it's a bit of soul, a bit of rock & roll I reckon... Little Richard didn't make many bad records though. I still can't believe it's gone "big" though

Bit harsh I think, recorded for Okeh at the same time as things like I Don't Want To Discuss It so just as much a 'soul' track as those on the Explosive LP really - it's been hanging around at £10 on UK Columbia for the last 20 years and now people think it's rare...

must admit i think 'Slade' when ever i hear it played out - not my sort of soul music , but fair dos is a big dance floor fav at mo in main rooms

I think 'Slade' a lot, down to the fact I downloaded 25 live bootlegs by them last year and am still happily listening to them! Sheffield City Hall 1973, one of the best live gigs I've ever heard.

p.s. soul connection - Slade once played gigs in the Bahamas supported by The Twans!

Harsh comment indeed, but possibly more a club tune.

For those old enough to recall, a real floorshaker at The Torch and The Wheel in its day, before Dave Godin coined "Northern Soul" as a definitive description of music on the soul club scene.

Not played in the 70's I think cause Slade had the hit with it.

not my cup of tea - but was about when i got into rare soul as we called it in early 70s - late 60s maybe

harsh..maybe ..on reflection..my personal memories of this track are rockers/greasers dancing to it in discos during summer holidays at Skegness alongside 'silver machine' hawkwind..i thought it was odd (to me ) to hear it @ Winding Wheel after so many northern classics..

I actually went to that gig and it was absolutely mid-blowing. Certainly the best Rock/Pop gig I think I've ever seen.......

...I've DJ'd a few gigs that were supported by twats, which is pretty similar... :wicked:

Richard's 'Get Down With It' is a monumental record that will never grow old It closed pretty much every original 6Ts night at West Hampstead and other venues that the club briefly had before alighting at the 100 Club.

Those who were around then and went to those West Hampstead nights will be hard pressed to remember it as anything other than fantastic, just as the nights themselves were....

This was played in a lot of the clubs back in the 60 Sixties . I always understood this to be a UK production. as it's arranged by Reg Guest and produced by Norman Smith

I've got a terrible version of this by The Donnie Collins Showband featuring Shaun :lol: on UK Pye demo and they do a note for note copy of Richard's version including that bit at the start about his beautiful hair, but it's in an Irish accent and has to be heard to be believed (I actually bought it for the other side, a pretty good version of I Can't Help Myself!)

so 'get down get with it' is Rock n Roll .... but Charlie Gracie's 'He'll never love you like i do' is "Northern soul" (which incedentally, i do like) ? plus, we embrace 'when we get there' and 'I walked away' but knock Mr Penniman

its big for those people who like rock &roll ' like you said before £10 quid on columbia thats all its worth .

Why all the negativity "Get Down With It " is a great record why not play it back to back with "Dance What You Wanna" quiff and shake-dancers ago-go :lol::g:

It's a pretty damn generic record. I love rock 'n roll and r'n'b but this doesn't cut it for me, nothing special about it. But if I was wasted and surrounded by dancing other wasteds I might see the light i suppose, it's happened b4

"Little Richard" and "Rockabilly" are two terms that should never be used in the same sentence.

Especially with only a couple of words to separate them...

If you think they play Richard's tracks on the rockabilly scene then you're obviously not on that scene...

...but for jivers and strollers? That's something else entirely....

Yup, recorded at Abbey Road studios I think, and only on UK 45 - and love or hate depends on your perspective :wink: ...for me, it was well known as a big club tune in the 60's, long before Slade got at it. Still got my issue, but don't know that I'd play it out...

...my final word..i never said it was crap..far from it..ive LR records in my collection..also Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry,Wolf etc..but 'get down..' always sounded R&R to me as opposed to R&B..wont be the last record played out that raises the odd eyebrow..

It was a record that was played in the late 60s and early 70s but was stopped dead in its tracks as soon as the Slade version was published. I think there are too many better records needing needle time for this to be getting in their way now.

You don't know where i go or or what i do mate.........but i have been on the scene for years, they may not of played them at the places you have been to, (the pub on a Thursday night), but i have heard the odd couple of early Little Richard tracks played at a few Rockabilly events that i attended, including a band or two doing the odd cover.
