A message from my sister in law who is a producer in various BBC programmes, informs me of this......

THE CULTURE SHOW: NORTHERN SOUL: KEEPING THE FAITH, Presented by Paul Mason TX'D Wednesday 25th September on BBC 2 @ 10pm. Let your pals know and let me know what you think of it!

Am sure it contains the footage from Nuneaton and will have footage from Elaine's film.

Where is Nuneaton? :)

It's that paradise next to that s**thole called Coventry... :D

These people are there to line there own pockets pure and simple sorry if this offends some. As for the BBC I

and your evidence for this is? The fact that she's making a film relating to a scene she's been on for decades? Have a word with yourself...

Nothing cooler than watching old wheelers dancing, (nowt wrong with Ike & Tina either come to think about it), the fact that they've been doing it since before some of us had been born makes it totally legitimate from my point of view.

Same with Wigan and the anecdotes totally legit and likely to be encompassed in the program as joe public will be able to relate to it more readily.

The price of being part of an elitist, underground scene, with a beige fashion sense, largely unremarkable dance style and preoccupation with rarity over quality, is that it is likely to be overshadowed by the more flamboyant and more accessible variation from the previous era.

Not wishing to cause offence....point is that the cliched version will make better telly for the majority of the BBC audience.

all this program is for is to help push the new northern film out shortly. Get ready for the divs on the scene maybe a few might get into it but the majority take the piss.

OMG you are serious, I thought you were just posting all this to wind people up....

Well young man you couldn't be further from the truth.

I'll watch the programme next week, I doubt that it, or the film will bring in a new wave of "divs" onto the scene. Anyway there's enough of them already on the scene

just wondered if these new divs will wear ridiculous plastic parodies of wigan garb, constantly go on about how the used to go to station road, when in fact they only went 'the youthy' buy loads of pressings and go to there local northen/ motwn night and the kings once a year. can they actually be any worse than the MAJORITY of punters now attending event!

@ the soul police. northern soul at its best its dance music at its worst its lift music and its got a history which the presenter is part of. if you don't like the programme turn it off, if you don't fancy the film don't watch it. on the other hand make a programme or film that ticks all your boxes. feckin ejits

Ooooh you scamp you, and I thought it was ignorance and a lack of experience you was communicating rather than a rapier like wit.

my signature at the bottom of every post must give it away lol

Don't forget Wigans Chosen Few on Top of The Pops, drinking warm Watneys Red Barrel, cans of Long Life pale ale, Jubbly's, Barathea Blazers, World of Sport, Feather cuts, the three day week, power cuts, Aztec bars, Harold Wilson, the pound in your pocket, Mr. Whippy ice cream, Crackerjack, Subbuteo, Golden Wonder Crisps, Wimpy Bars, Chopper Bikes, Johnny Seven, Action Man, Stingray, Fireball XL5, Supercar, Stingray, Captain Fantastic, Kodak Instamatic Cameras, Children walking to and from school.

The clip the BBC have up is of the Wigan young souls. I am cool with that, youngsters into it and doing their own thing is fine by me.....Only let down was that godawful Holly St James playing in the background.....Only one notch up from Paul Anka in the crapola list of shame

Edited by Steve G

seen the clips and agree good to see the clips of the youngsters...and being youngsters i suppose they would wanna get into it all...the fashion etc

have a few younger regulars (but not teens) who have recently got into it at our night and they have the new range of fred perry with torch patches, baggy strides etc..makes me smile but i dont take the piss..its all new to them and i can remember the buzz of that..as for oldies doing it..as with the 50 year old skins/mods at scooter rally in air wair and combats or parkas covered in patches that only just fit..not a good look

as for the tv companies its the same when they film scooter rallies..still think its all about mods and rockers and only wanna film comedy mods with scooters full of mirros and lights over a soundtrack of my generation..lot more to scooterists than that

looking forward to the film though...sure it will be good...enjoying the book but to be honest as yet not read much i havnt read before in others already

Aztec Bars and Captain Fantastic.  I was starting to think I was the only one.  No one here at work has heard of them !!

Anyway, back to the Cultured exchange on the forthcoming event !

Sam 'how do you sell a man a good record who's still playing Paul Anka?'

wise words inedeed.

The problem there though is that the man who is still playing Paul Anka is probably getting ten requests for it in every spot from the sheep, so what does he do, play to the crowd or play to himself?

I watched the BBC clip last night. It looked like Paul Mason really enjoyed himself.

My thought was, he's getting an itch. He'll be back and there is nothing he can do about it.

Best comment i have read so far.

This will be for Joe Public and not for the majority of us that have been on the scene for years.

I will watch it just for the entertainment value and not take it too seriously.

We all came and left this scene at different times so we all have different views of what the scene was or is like, and we will all never agree.

So let us all just sit back and be thankfully we all still have a scene for our age group and stop moaning about it.

Stu.

My "Old Wheelers dancing to Ike and Tina Turner" comment was on the Kebab House thread by the way.

(And I doubt  they were "original" wheelers anyway...they weren't old enough for a start)

Spencerfest

And circle skirts made out of old curtains?

....yes realised on reading back today....sorry about that.....inadvertent mental merging of threads due to senility I'm afraid.....hence the urge to defend the elder statesmen of "their" scene.

....If the culprits weren't old wheelers, please feel free to rip the p*ss out of them!!

....don't wear the uniform personally and save my dancing for the appropriate setting and would also have been embarrassed by the display you witnessed

Hi Pete, the comment wasn't aimed at any particular DJ (I happen to know and get on with the one you are probably thinking about), but you'll hear that fookin' record in 50 venues every week. It's a bad record, there's thousands of better ones, tens of thousands in fact. That's where the divs are, not some curious people that come along and try the scene out and see what all the fuss is about.

These days i put as much distance as I can between the "Teddy boy retro scene" with all its commercialism and cliches, and myself, but still enjoy the best of the music.

I'm not disagreeing about the record Steve, I just think that our mystery DJ is in a Catch-22 situation.  Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

Hi Pete.I know this is so off topic but....what a situation to find yourself in for any "dj".When it gets as bad as that, its time to walk.

The last time I ever dj'd, and there's a reason why it was the last time as you'll see in a minute - I was playing Siky Hargraves, Natural Four and other well known but hardly common oldies, I was asked for Jimmy Mack (the song not the artist), Brainstorm, Because Of You and Nine Times Out Of Ten.  I didn't play any of them because I hadn't got any of them "what do you mean you have't got Brainstorm" (er, nobodys played it for 35 years you moron) anyway one guy kept asking and asking for Tell Me It's Just A Rumour Baby so I eventually borrowed it off someone else - and he didn't dance.  I had a very poor dance floor reaction and as I finished, the next guy put on Because Of You and rammed the floor and proceeded to play the commonest Motowns etc to a very busy dancefloor, I said never, ever again, and nowadays I just do my DJ sets via podcasts where it doesn't matter if people dance or not!

Shame to let a crowd of divs put you off deejaying to a proper live and switched on audience.

Yeah I guess it was, but there's no going back after that.

Pretty ironic that the first clip from the show covers acceptance, integration and unity in the Northern Soul scene whilst numerous posts in this thread give a very different view.

Well there is a lot of in fighting and bickering isn't there, there always has been.  Whether it's 60's vs Modern, original vinyl only vs pressings, retro baggy trouser fashions vs contemporary clothing - there's always going to be something that people bicker about.  The one thing that has never changed though, is the friendliness of the scene, and the way people are accepted straight away.

I suppose knowing the music policy and DJs for any given venue, you should know what (and who) to expect on the night.  Where there's an across the board music policy, you're going to get a mixed crowd.  Because the scene's been going so long, we've got various factions, but they all get along together, regardless of personal taste and style.  Like you say Pete, a friendly scene.
