What a great article

Crackin that Dave   I loved the whole not being able to view it at the sellers home bit    .

A friend of mine DJ's with 78's so I always check any I find when hunting records. Usually just landfill but did find these last week and paid £2.50 for the pair. The Little Richard is cracked from the edge to the label but still plays relatively loud and clear!

When a party is on I usually spin Sixteen Tons...The Wanderer and Rock Around The Clock via 78rpm and they sound much 'deeper' than the 45's! Folk luv to see them!x But...i've broke more than i;ve got! The Wanderer and Sixteen Tons I found originally in '94 in a charity shop in Aldershot! MINT they were and had been in a Gentlemens possession since new and probably played a handful of times before being archived in his record box...and I was well happy! Got them home....took them into the kitchen....went to show the then Mrs....got em outta me bag.....and dropped the pair like a flippin' donut.....and they shattered on the floor! The deserving name calling came forth from the Ex.....whilst I looked at the waste spread on the floor! Poo!x It took me several years to replace them and today me 78's are in a box of their own and they stay there until a special occasion!x I'd happily buy any vinyl tune at any cost cos I can drop it as such....but a 78.....irrelevant of costs.....i'd bust it....guaranteed!x There's a guy in Saffron Walden Cambs that is a Millionaire who also collects just 78's....he has over 40,000 in his collection and has his rareity's framed all around his 10 bedroomed Mansion....everywhere!!! It keeps you fascinated for hours reading the lovely labels and names of artistes going back near on 100 years! I relish popping round his on the few occasions I get the chance to each year!x Great article and the tune ain't that bad either and glad I've heard it!x

John Tefteller - well known dealer recently smashed the high price vinyl stakes paying $37,100 for a rare 78 !!

Thats not more FW went for over £25.5K

Wouldn't have thought so, to be perfectly honest, even though companies like Melodisc did press 78s in the UK intended for export until early 1961 - but that was only for West African music.  As far as I'm aware, the Beatles' Indian 78s were only pressed in India, and I think it's safe to say that any single releases exported out of the UK from mid-1961 onwards would have been pressed as 45s - for a start, they'd be easier to ship without having to worry about breakages, making the export of UK 78s futile.

 

The only Beatles Indian 78s I've seen or heard of are actual Indian pressings, and any UK exports (should they exist) would look exactly as a UK issue would, even with "Made In England" printed on the label.  Recorded music libraries such as KPM, Francis Day & Hunter and Chappell Music pressed vinyl 78s until the early '70s, but these were for library use only, and were never initially made available to the public.

Me Wanderer is on a blue HMV 45...which was in me head for some reason when writing casually!x But yep...mint copy of Teenager went smashing on the floor.......even worse considering the value too!x I paid a £1 for it at the time...well for both that and Sixteen Tons....well pi**ed off tho'!x Thanx for reminding me of me real loss Gene R....!x Mind u.....I think we'd both be crying if it had of been a test press or summink of the Wanderer init!!!phew!!x

I don't usually buy 78's but when I saw this lush piece of Doo-Wop in a charity shop for 50p I couldn't resist. Especially as there  is no UK 45 release.

....music and the collecting of it is a joy Swifty...always has been...and I won;t have it any other way!x I can't 'give it large' technically music wise in here as there are far more knowledgeable folk who know better...and I respect that unreservedly....and will always remain a willing student!!x Same as Football really...I leave the detail to others and enjoy the spectacle...or not!! The article doesn't say it's the rarest 78, there's two known copies and Tefteller talks about how there are many #s that were pressed but have no known copies. It's just possibly the most a 78 has sold for.

 

Tefteller used to actively insult soul buyers in his discoveries columns.

BEST tune of the day for me Dave....thank you!!x Just putting the details in me Boot Sale book.....then notice in me Collectors book it's £700 for the 45!!! I must have seen one in the thouuuusands i've trawled thru.....but now know what i'm looking at...!!hehe!x This thread has inspired me to re-visit the 78's piles....which i've taken a wiiiide birth of in recent years due to my haphazardness with such delicate things!!!!!x I've just dusted me 78's box down and had a good look...and here's me top 20 outta my 60 odd! No order just as they 'hit me' as I went thru em!x I've probably listened to around 1500 in me time collecting music....and these are the ones i've salvaged/kept out of that limited exposure to date!x There could have been more but I keep to the 45 of the obvious 'classics'...if I have them! Most of these 20 I have on 45 but kept them as I think they look good to play at the right occasion!x I do a 'travellers' Party....about 2000 attend each year. I play them there....they love their Rock n Roll and old classics.....and when I spin em on 78's......well....not 1 dare come near me all night when DJing....i'm me own man...end of...and they appreaciate and respect it!! I'm a 'well travelled man'....they reckon!!x

I've taken the liberty to cut n paste what I considered the most interesting piece of the interview which shines a light into the inner workings of a mind of an obsessive collector.  I'd love to know what the results would be if somebody did a similar mail shot of say inner Detroit or Chicago these days - I wonder what if any rare records would be flushed out.

"Mr. Tefteller, 50, is one of the world’s most prolific collectors of Paramount blues.  He pursues complete runs of every Paramount blues artist he considers important.

 

Mr. Tefteller lives in rural Oregon but spends much of the year traversing the country for fresh stock, placing “Records Wanted” advertisements in antiques catalogs and The Farmer’s Almanac.  

 

He said he receives about a hundred calls a day, most yielding inconsequential results. “Records have a way of hiding,” he said.

 

In 2002 Mr. Tefteller mailed fliers to every resident within 100 miles of Paramount’s former studio site in Grafton, Wis. “I flooded the area, and then I sat at the Best Western in Port Washington and fielded phone calls at the hotel for days,” he said.

 

But his persistence paid off. One call produced the only known copy of King Solomon Hill’s blistering 1932 blues sides “My Buddy Blind Papa Lemon”/“Times Has Done Got Hard.”

 

“I said, ‘O.K., put it back in the sleeve and put it somewhere where you’re not going to drop anything on it, and please don’t even touch it until I get there,’ ” he recalled.

Which is probably one more copy than "Stormy Weather" by the Five Sharps on Jubilee 78.

 

Yes, don't forget how John Tefteller used to look down his nose at soul collectors and openly insult them......he's no real hero in that sense.

One of my Mom's records that I used to play loads when a very very young kid (Pre school) along with Why Do Fools Fall In Love, Hound Dog and others which I consequently broke.
