Motown Cd For A Friend

Recommended Posts

I've a friend at work, who I had previously done a Motown CD for. She's 11 years my senior and likes tamla motown, but she only really knows about their chart stuff. So I basically ripped a copy of the Motown Connoisseurs Vol 1 CD, plus a couple of extra tracks (fantastic 4 - can't stop lookin' & martha + vandellas - my baby loves me). Anyway recently she said it was jumping and wanted a new CD done. So I made one up using some CD's I've got, can't use vinyl can't rig turntable up to the computer. :shades:

Anyway she's been off for a week and she came back to work today and said she can't stop dancing round her flat to the CD that I'd done for her. I put some stuff on there that I knew she liked, stuff like Needle In A Haystack, Ain't No Mountain plus a couple of Gladys Knight tracks, because I knew she was fond of her stuff. One thing that made me laugh was that she said she preferred Chris Clark from the first CD to Frank wilson on this one! :shhh:

The question I'd like to ask is what 20 Motown tracks would you put on a CD for a friend?

Anyway here's what I put on it, she said she especially loves the first track.

1. Edwin Starr - I Have Faith In You

2. Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - Ain't No Mountain High Enough

3. Hearts Of Stone - If I Could Give You The World

4. Martha Reeves & The Vandellas - Love, Guess Who

5. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - My Baby Changes Like The Weather

6. The Supremes - Life Beats

7. Thelma Houston - Nothing Left To Give

8. The Originals - Good Lovin' Is Just A Dime Away

9. Dynamic Superiors - Don't Send Nobody Else

10. Chris Clark - Day By Day Or Never

11. The Velvelettes - Needle In A Haystack

12. David Ruffin - Walk Away From Love

13. Bobby Taylor - Oh I've Been Blessed

14. Frank Wilson - Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)

15. Kim Weston - I'm Still Loving You

16. The Supremes - He's All I Got

17. Gladys Knight & The Pips - Just Walk In My Shoes

18. Frances Nero - Keep On Loving Me

19. The Temptations - Truly Yours

20. The Contours - Just A Little Misunderstanding

21. Gladys Knight & The Pips - No One Could Love You More

22. Virgil Henry - You Ain't Sayin' Nothin' New

23. The Originals - Goodnight Irene

Hope this doesn't deflect your thread Supercorsa.

I have a similar thing going on at the moment.

In my local pub one can regulary hear Motown compliation discs.

Unfortunately the records are the normal 'run of the mill' Motown tracks e.g Baby Love, Jimmy Mack ect.(with other better tracks as well).

Recently, the younger relation (in her 50's) of the landlord and landlady has started to take over the running of the pub.

The pub always has background music and I've worked hard to get these 'run of the mill' Motown discs played over the Country or Rock etc.requests.

Anyway, in an attempt to explain to the new landlady that there is much more to Motown/easy-listening soul than she has at her disposal (and she likes the popular Motown type of stuff), I have created the following complilation (had someone else do the tecno stuff) of what I think are brilliant Motown(esk) and great 'easy to get used to' records but not the 'run of the mill' that might be played in the boozer instead of the norm.

I know that they are not all Motown records but I think this is inline with the thread i.e educating those around us (through a compilation), who are not normally into the music.

She's not actualy got the CD yet (nor have I) so can't wait for it's first outing in my second home!

Would you like to hear this compilation in your local?

Here goes:

Don't come running to me. Cissy Houston.

Why when the love is gone. The Isley Brothers.

I got a feeling. Barbara Randolf.

I still can't get to you. Joseph Moore.

Getting mighty crowded. Betty Everett.

Love runs out. Willie Hutch.

Behave yourself. Miss Madelaine.

Girls are out to get you. The Fascinations.

This loved starved heart. Marvin Gaye.

Only the guilty cry. Clydie King.

Walk with me, talk to me. The Four Tops.

Don't lead me on. Emanuel Lasky.

In my lonely room. Martha reeves & The Vandellas.

Two of a kind. Wade Flemmons.

Kiss my love goodbye. Bettye Swann.

This heart of mine. The Artistics.

Walking up a one way street. Willie Tee.

He's all I got. The Supremes.

I can't break the news. Ben E King.

And in return. Sheila Ferguson.

Washed ashore. The Platters.

I'll be loving you. The Soul Brothers Six.

Take your love and run. Barbara Lynn.

Everything's Tuesday. Chairman of The Board.

Just another heartache. Little Ritchie.

Truly yours. The Spinners.

Enough to convert anyone in my opinion! :D

Drew.

What a great choice. If they were playing this in my local I'd be in there every night. Anywhere that plays Washed Ashore would have my attendance.

Never mind the Motown, I think she likes you

i agree with pete, i've generally found over the years that if a woman says she really likes northern-style records she has an ulterior motive

if she does genuinely like northern soul - best to give her a wide berth, cos she's probably a bit mental
