Genuine request: Could some of you more 'in the know' of the deep soul genre post a few of your favorites. I'm looking for less obvious, stuff I may not have come across, but if there's a more obvious stone-dead-favorite that you think is a must listen to then please post that too. Top quality group. Two members were in the Glories, Mildred Vaney and Frankie Gearing, Gearing cuting some great deep soul, not only on her beal street LP but also 'Tears on my pillow' for the Bound sound logo in Florida. Lois Reeves was also a member, formerly of Martha reeves and the Vandellas. An excellent choice.

Yep, it's a super record Andy. The whole Memphis based Hi output is absolute class. The fantastic Darryl Carter is credited on the QE record - here's one from him.

I also always loved the Hi output and have many many Hi 45's ... BUT ... just to complete my collection, I bought copies of all those cheap UK comp Hi CD's put out about 20+ years back ..... comps like ... Soul Searching; What's The Question 1 & 2; Memphis Soul Greats; Trouble, Heartaches & Sadness; Pain, Sorrow & Lonliness; Should I Go Or Should I Stay; Name of The Game; Hi Girls; Hi Records 45 Collection 1 & 2 ... ETC.

Heard this one out last night, all music should be this good!

Yep, there's plenty to go at Roburt. There's a superb Hi box set with accompanying booklets of notes - its very extensive. Ian D had a packaged one for sale the other week - cheap.

Those old cheapie Hi related CD's were put out by Demon Records, they didn't have extensive sleeve notes but the music they contained was fandabbydozy ... 

they still have copies of em on Amazon BUT they're not cheap anymore (used to cost around 4 quid each for 20+ tracks).

I've seen Irma Thomas, Barbara Lynn, Percy Sledge and Ray Charles perform live in honky tonk small country bar venues, decades ago.

Also Allen Toussaint while in New Orleans back in the 70s. He was awesome. Same with James Booker and many others...

They were all very good. I tended to like funk more, so I really liked seeing the original funky Meters.
