Also Pat Bradys Jnr McCants - Try Me, Little Carl Carlton if memory serves me correctly was covered for 8 or 9 years.

I'll put a £5 on it being something in Butch's box! I've got a tape from 85 with him playing the Del Larks twice in a set and I don't think Shifty let the "mello Souls" cat out of the bag until around the turn of the century?

Mello Souls, '85???...I asked him about this as was having a debate as to whether or not he played this at Stafford and he reckons first time he played this was mid to late '86...after Stafford closed, maybe the Burntwood niters.

There are of course his Diane Lewis and Temptones cover ups. Both I think are unknown so does that really count????

I think it must be a cover up of something that exists on a proper record to count, a one off acetate by an unknown artist or never before heard maste tape tunes will often be impossible to ever "uncover" since not even the person playing them might know what it really is at times. Brings up the old question if there is indeed any point in covering up a one off acetate of an unissued track for instance. Some might try and track the producer, label owners etc. of course, but at times it must be rather meaningless to cover things up, since no one will ever get another copy anyway. Covering up something that is relatively common and keeping people in the dark for a long time is more fun I think.

What about the Salvadors - Can't Wait no Longer c/u ?

I hate cover ups what is the point. If its rare most people carnt afford it If its common then so be it, let us all know so we can all get a copy if its a good record it will stand on its own merits. To me its a ego thing I know somthing you dont,if want to hear this record you will have to book me. WHY WHY WHY let us all know who the artist is so he she can get the credit they desirve for recording it in the first place not the DJ playing it I can not put in words how much I hate cover ups I know my view on this want go down well with all on this site and i am sure some one will try to put me right, by all means try. Rant over back to the wall papering.

One reason is that some people spend a hell of a lot of time and money finding obscure good sounds, and then it is quite natural to not want everyone who never put in any effort themselves to just be able to buy it, especially if you are competing with people who can throw loads of money at a record without too much second thought. Money also plays a big part in cover ups sometimes. Why do people find it so annoying? I personally think the "give the artist the credit" argument is a load of bullshit, most people are just annoyed that they are not being let in on the secret, I don't think they are really worried about taking credit away from some long forgotten artist who might be dead anyway.

Hi Mark, since I saw her last, she has dyed her hair, her voice has improved 100% and she looks like a million dollars! The second track she played a few weeks ago, next to the one she is famous for, was an excellent sound in my opinion. The story I told you, I'm not going down that road!

I enjoyed the Wilton, there was one track played, which I never thought in a million years was the four tops, top of your head Mark, do you know what the track is? Hope to bump into you in the near future. On the above posting, hope someone gets it, especially the name that was covered up.

Nice posting IMO

Cover-up's a part of the scene (and many others like the Hip-Hop scene) and to my mind should remain. They are a good laff, frustrating and so on and I understand the point re: unissued acetates being covered up as being a bit pointless if there is only the one copy. However, it is also as a means to prolong the life of that 45 by making it harder to locate copies and therefore keeping it 'fresh' for longer. Lokk at other records in the past that were covered up and then when quantity were discovered etc became played out. Besides I can still remember some of the amusing titles and labels that keb amongst others gave them Made me giggle!

That's all as I have to get back to 'Sponge Bob Squarepants' with my kids, sorry if it all reads a bit rushed...and just for you Mike

was Dickie Searlings Maurice McAli / Mr Soul Genuine 45 that stayed covered

from Wigan until Rod Shard found a couple of copys Stateside in the early 90,s.

Biggest laugh ive had with the cover/ up gang is when some dj who shall

remain nameless played Ben E King Cry to Me at the Droylsden niters in the

90,s c/up the daft sod thought nobody had heard it before, you should have

seen Pete Lawson rolling about pissing his sides as only Pete could in his crazy

way For the next half hour of this guy,s spot several soulies

took the piss by dirty dancin every time he put a tune on

Mr searling used to play Mike Theodor Orchestra "Nightime Shadows" inst at the casino around 1978/79. He then sold or swopped it with Sam when he was DJing at the casino. I asked sam about it in the late 80's/90's and he couldn't remeber it at all ! he played it for ages covered up.then it disappeared Anybody any wiser ?

Was this not just an acetate, the one I seen had a Grapevine label stuck on it, think this resided in Scotland for time also, would like to hear this now, has it stood the test of time ????

Yes it was I! Yonks ago myself and Rob Marriott came up with the United Four,alas only conjecture!

In an ideal world there would be no need for cover ups, if everyone was familiar with concepts like integrity, honour and originality there would be no need, but even then there would be the money aspect sometimes. I am personally convinced that if you would tell some people "hey, here is a really good record, unknown too, listen, or perhaps give it a few spins?", they wouldn't play it, or even listen. Some people have zero talent and taste of their own and wouldn't know a good unknown record if it was given to them, instead they will buy the very same record AFTER someone else has done all the work of finding it and turning it into a popular floorfiller, cause they only buy popular floorfillers! Another scenario that has been known to happen more than a few times is that some lesser known DJ plays a lesser known tune, maybe for years, but does he get the credit? Hell no, what happens instead is that some better known DJ picks it up, again after all the hard work has been done, and then claims the credit (and gets it from all but a few disgruntled "elitists") himself. These are the more "serious" reasons for covering something up, apart from that it can be great fun, and it is a very effective way of making people listen to a record. If I would play an obscure record and tell people "this is a £25 record and is not common but still not that hard to pick up", will they listen? If I instead lie and say it is a "very few known copies, lots of interest from so and so, etc." record and cover it up, I can guarantee you that people will pay a lot more attention, silly as it may be. Cover ups can be a good way to make people actually listen to the music and can preserve freshness and maintain (or create) interest for longer, rather than people turning their back on it cause it ain't expensive, or whatever. Like it or not, cover ups are part of the scene, and will probably continue to be part of it.
