“Groovy Generation” will always make my Top 20. I was lucky get the chance to play a digital copy on a cd player in United Sound Systems. Later that day I headed to Clay McMurray’s studio on Livernois

  • Sweet Things is the much better record imo. Proper uptempo Detriot Northern.

Got my first copy before ever hearing it home. The 'groovy generation' title appeal invited me to play that side first. And there the piano, bass, drum, horns and handclaps introduction blast out of the speakers instantly brought me to heaven ! Billy's preaching was so convincing, it helped me to 'overpass' those teeny vindictive lyrics.

That side still remain a found memory from the first time and is my 'preference' or my 'hit' side if you will. But with time I dwelled more and more often during my music session home into 'sweet things' for a 'funkier' and somehow more 'soulful' 2 minutes experience. King of a 2 sider record anyway from a fantastic typical collectable label.

“Groovy Generation” will always make my Top 20. I was lucky get the chance to play a digital copy on a cd player in United Sound Systems. Later that day I headed to Clay McMurray’s studio on Livernois where we discussed Thelma Records in some detail. Clay wrote down the backing group information on this sheet of paper and tried to sketch his memories of the interior of 6519 Grand River Avenue. You can see “Mr. C” noted at a table by the door. That was Thelma (Coleman) Gordy’s Father, who ran the business.

Prefer the Sweet Things side; it just seems to me that Groovy Generation is trying too hard to imitate parts of "Really Sayin' Something" or is that just me?

Groovy generation for me by a smidge.  Having a copy of every known release on this excellent label, wouldn't mind demo's as well (doubles), if only I could afford them.

Sad old man me.
