Just thought as the ballads thread seems to be doing so well. And not knowing if this has been done recently as I'm a fairly new member. What about favourite mid tempo/ballad album tracks.

Now I know that lots of folk are 45 only kinda people but most have a few hidden lp gems somewere and I suspect that a lot have lots.

Any chance of sharing them?

C'mon folks I'll start with the first five.

Shirley Brown-When you really love somebody-Arista

The New Sound-Everybody wants to be free-Turbo/P-Vine

Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers-Who Are You-Source

Anita Ward-Cover Me-TK

The Moments-Lady in Blue-Stang.

Kev " I'm gonna stay" is also on the Mark of the beast lp. For me though Charles Drain version is better.

Seems Funny but most album track "goodies" fall into the modern soul bracket maybe its cos 45's were the common denominator in the 60's

So for me its got to be

Aint no need Ralph Graham Sussex

Why must our eyes be always turned backwards Lou Bond

It aint worth getting up in the morning Johnny Taylor

John

Gladys Knight- Don't Tell Me I'm Crazy - Motown

Marvin Gaye & Diana Ross - My Mistake - Motown

Isley Brothers - Catchin' Up On Time - Probably Motown again, need to check when I get home

I don't think that's a fair comment as there's lots of 60's album tracks that have 'goodies' i. e. Leon Haywood 'Got to be mellow' or The Metros 'Do the Pied Piper'. The Shades of Blue 'A Way to Love' All phonomenal tunes.

But you're probably right in the respect that albums in the black record market were not compiled in large amounts until later in the sixties, with the probable exception of the bigger soul labels like Stax and Motown. But surely Wand/Capitol/RCA/WB and others had there share of the market.

Anyone got any more info please?

It's from the "You" album :-) . Lovely version of "I'm not strong enough to love you" on this too.

I haven't come across that one yet-but Aretha has done so many good songs-one of my favourites lately has been 'I'm in love'.

Kev

"It's All Been Said Before" - Bobby Hutton off the "Piece Of The Action" album.

Hey Ian

I was reading the Pinnacle thread and you seem to know a bit about the business. I've read 'Death of Rhythm' & Blues and 'The History of Stax records' etc etc but could do with more info. What would be the market coverage of say a The Tempests, Maxine Brown, Chuck Jackson or Garnet Mimms album as opposed to The Miracles or The Tams etc. Any ideas???

Cheers Kev

One particular track that I love is "He Don't Care About Me" from Smokey Robinson & The Miracles "I'll Try Something New Album (1962).

Suz

Is it just me but doesn't the later Smokey version of 'I'll try something new' sound better than the Miracles early 60's version.

Kiki Dees version is also outstanding. What a vocal!

Kev

Chuck Bridges and the Happening "Head over heals" on Vault.

Quite a few tracks on the Satisfaction Unltd. LP on Hot Wax.

  • Author

Certainly on a UK 45.

Another great Smokey Robinson and the Miracles-Just Losing You- I've only managed to pick it up on a Sounds Superb album so far but take my word its 'hairs on the back of your neck' kinda tune.

There are loads of L.P. tracks, but we would have to rule out all unrelesed tracks and P-Vine, or we could be on here for a very long time.

here's a few things. The ones that i own i don't mind sharing, but i'm stil looking for some.

1 It Makes You Wanna Cry - Mavis Staples - Stax

2 Why You Wanna Make Me Blue/ I Can't Get Used To Sharing You - The Platters - Musicor/Stateside.

3 Down So Long - The Cospel Classics - Checker

4 Are You To Blind To See - Segments Of Time - Sussex

5 Long Live The King - Detroit Emeralds - Westbound.

6 Sunshine Roses And Rainbows - Smoke - Casablanca. (one for sale)

8 Nobody But You Babe - Clarence Reid (needed)

Sad Sam

I have Sentimental reasons on a 45... nice funk flip to it too... and So long is on 45 as well, both amazing Cheapies..

Garland Green - I've quit Running the streets

Solid Solution - Think it over girl

della reese - i got the blues

dee dee sharp - coming home baby

aretha franklin - one room paradise

Some of Teddy Pendergrass' best stuff are album tracks IMO. 'The more i get the more i want' for example.

Not 100%, but thought that this came out on a 45...

Burnley's always good for me.

Few there I don't know. Always championed Seek and You Shall Find. Prefer the Isley Bros version. Much underplayed IMO.
