Not sure if thats a good term for it but hey, it does it for me. :boxing: I seem to have loads of records that have lyrics that talk about the social/political environment of the late 60's/70's. Listening to them now, it makes me realise how little the world has really progressed! For example:

ANTONIO CASTRO - Welfare

LEROY CLOFER - Mr Big Man

GHETTO KITTY - Stand Up And Be Counted

FOUR MONITORS - Dark Side Of The Ghetto

JOHNNY KING & FATBACK - Peace, Love, Not War

WALLY COCO - Message To Society

FRANKIE STATON - Speckled Rainbow Love

BETHEA THE MASKMAN - Ghetto Love

SOUL INJECTIONS - Stay Of The Moon

ESSENCE - Black Reflections

I would be really interested in other examples from the collectors out there? And what name do you give to this genre of music..? :D

Off the What's Going On LP, I've always found the words of Mercy Mercy Me very moving. And sadly still apposite today.

Could someone post a clip please? Can't do it where I'm at the moment.

I'd offer up the OJays "for the love of money", but I'm a "rockabilly rebel" who obviously has no clue.

yep its a top tune indeed ill try and dig it out mate!

R Dean Taylor "Lets Go Somewhere Baby" racial prejudice overtones :D

Yeah Back To The World springs to mind straight away

Curtis Mayfield - Back To The World =

William Bell - Man In The Street - Stax

9th Creation - Much Too Much" - Hilltack

If have always liked the alternative version of the 'Mack' score by Alan Silvestri with Eugene Mcdaniels on vocal duty.

Edited by Richard Bergman

Four Shades - My World (Ronn) Unemployment.....

The Family Affair - I Had A Friend (Authentic) Drugs...

Directions - We Need Love (Brunswick LP)...Political.....

fantastic piece of soul.

Al Green - Gotta find a new world

Freda Payne - Bring the boys home

Al Wilson- Be concerned

Lily white mama, jet black dad - Ray Scott (for the rockabilly rebels)

Almost anything by Gil Scott Heron.

'The Bottle' and 'Home is Where The Hatred Is' are obvious but how about 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' 'Whitey's On The Moon', 'Not Needed', 'The Klan', '(You Can't Depend On) The Train From Washington', 'Waiting For The Axe To Fall', etc., etc.

New Sounds - Everybody Wants To Be Free - P-Vine LP

Great idea Mr Sadot, although I was going to save this for 20th January next year, gives us time to build it up.
This was mentioned earlier and is becoming one of my favourite tracks on the LP, meant to play it out last Friday and forgot all about, maye the theme tune for the world today!

Gil Scott Heron - Train From Washington - Arista LP

Posted info:
As requested, the master of political songs, seen him live 3 times, twice not so good but once was fantastic, just one of the best things. I am going through a real GSH phase at the moment and really revisiting what a genius he is, not a traditional soul singer but when you listen to songs by this guy you realise its more than a little arrogant of "us" to try and dictate to Black Americans what soul is.

Gil Scott Heron - The Klan - Arista LP

Posted info:
From a truly fantastic LP, and he says it all really,

Curtis Mayfield - We The People Darker Than Blue - Curtom LP

Posted info:
Great shout from whoever mentioned this, one of the greatest of Curtis's many great moments, fantastic songwriting and just love his voice, a true genius in so many ways, and the best arranger of percussion ever!!!

Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up - Curtom LP

Posted info:
The anthem of the political era, this is the LP version as the last few minutes of percussion is sheer magic. Another record that due to its familiarity its easy to forget how truly great this record is, Just awesome.

William Bell- The Man in the Street (One of my all time faves!)

Terry Callier- Ho Tsing Mee (A Song of the Sun)

Edwin Starr- Im Still a Struggling Man

Lonnie Liston Smith- A Chance For Peace

The Impressions- We're A Winner

100% Pure Poison- Windy C

Marvin Gaye- Where Are We Going

The Valentines- Breakaway

Superlatives - Come On Down To The Ghetto - Three G's

Posted info:
Okay last one before I retire, will be back tomorrow,
Took this the other week to play out too but I bottled it a little, then you listen to it here and think this would sound fantastic played out, it would have me shaking my ass!

You should hear the later version of 'Darker than Blue'. One he made just before he died. He uses the SEGA megadrive Sonic the Hedghog noise. The one where he jumps for the rings. Pure genious. Totally fits in.

It's on The 'New World Order' album

Superlatives - Come On Down To The Ghetto - Three G's

I AGREE INCREDIBLE RECORD TO A BRILLIANT FLIP SIDE BALLAD!

BAZ A shades.gif

Judging by his initial list of songs, I took Paul's original post to mean "current rare soul spin"-type things as opposed to more general / well-known Impressions tracks etc. Here are a few oddball titles that fit the bill:

Lonnie Lester: Power Struggle

Fabulous Fugitives: What The World Needs

The Grooms: Slow Down

the Blendels: Beware

Moovin, Soothin & Stone Funk: You Have To Pray

James Kelly Duhon: Pusher Man

As for naming this "genre", I used to call it "conscious funk" (or soul), but decided it didn't really have the right ring to it.

Miriam Makeba - X
RIP.

One of my fave Curtis Mayfield tracks is "Keep on Keeping On". I also offer up the well known, "Friendship Train" Gladys Knight & The Pips.

Suz

Curtis Mayfield - Hard Times - Curtom LP

The entire album is stupendous. If the production on it had been a little better this would be a top album IMO.

Back to the records not rare but

Isleys 'Harvest for the World'

The Commodore's 'The Zoo (Human Zoo) class record IMO.
