Had another brilliant night at Lowton. Chuffed to see the place so busy celebrating 20 years of top soul sounds. The dance floor was busy from the off and still full at 2pm. Well done to all the Djs; who as always played what we love. Let's hope those who came last night remember what a great night it was and return for more in April.

LOWTON 20th Anniversary – THIS IS NORTHERN SOUL!
So said the massive banner adorning the front of the stage. Well it certainly is!! After many years since my last visit, I decided to let my Sat Nav do the work on the way there – big mistake as I ended up down some country lane in the middle of nowhere. Once I reverted to old-fashioned means of navigation I was soon there (asking for directions – anyone remember doing that?). It’s not like it’s hard to find – just off the A580 East Lancs Road. I arrived at around 8:15pm. A great location for soulies from all directions of the compass.
The room was steadily filling up and the silky soul voice of Clydene Jackson was soon coming from the superb sound system. But no! Wait! The sound system got even better after a highly skilled and professional switch to some replacement speakers – the clarity and volume was amazing. The huge wooden dance floor was already too much of an attraction to miss for many very, very good dancers of both sexes who were doing their stuff.

You can always tell when a venue has been promoted properly – it does exactly what it says on the tin and the copious amounts of PR leading up to the night proved to be absolutely authentic. The dance hall was dressed perfectly, with medieval banquet style banners hanging from the walls proudly displaying venues and logos from the halcyon days of the rare soul scene. Hearing Rita Da Costa took me back to Station Road for a while. The stage and DJ area was simply prepared with a blackout surround and only a small amount of light on the DJ’s – clearly the emphasis is on the dance floor and the patrons – exactly as it should be.
By 9:45pm the place was rammed with literally hundreds of real soulies and all tables taken in the dance hall and the floor packed with a very knowledgeable and appreciative crowd. Something for everyone was the order of play from the DJ’s – some R&B, some underplayed Top 500, Classic Wigan sounds (how good did Frank Dell sound?), underplayed & mid tempo Staffordesque 60’s, Crossover and 70’s. It all fitted in and kept the floor full. I don’t want to review individual DJ’s but suffice to say they were all superb and all on the same page.

I spent a long time in the record bar near the door so I could get the full experience (and flog a few 45's). Vinyl sales were going well with the larger dealers busy all night. I met some great new soul friends and had some really refreshing conversations. You can always gauge a soul night in the record bar where you can have audible conversations away from the coal face action of the dance hall. If I have one criticism it's the quality of the beer but some things never change at soul nights and if that's all there is to worry about then losing the plot comes to mind. Nearly everyone I spoke with was of the same opinion – great venue, great crowd, great music = a truly great experience!
I left at 12:15am and unlike a lot of venues only a tiny number of people drifting away (probably had to be up at daft o'clock like me) the place was still rammed with a packed dance floor.

If you haven't been yet make sure you visit next time - you wont be disappointed! This is Northern Soul.

As Arnie says – I’ll be back!

Speaking to Bob Hinsley just the other day, December was an occasion to forget from the point of view of the problems with the heating alright...if as confirmed, it's been fixed, it's small fry compared to the substantial loss of revenue the venue owners would have faced...honestly, we're relieved that our loyal supporters showed tolerance in the light of the failure to resolve the matter sooner...and doubtless they're glad they sorted it with the insurance....

.....ANYWAY....WE'RE BACK ON!........YOU NEVER REALLY DOUBTED WE WOULDN'T HAVE A 20TH TO CELEBRATE...DID YOU?

WHAT a great line-up of dj's.....mountains of pure, unadulterated quality northern soul, in yer face and on the dance floor!...just 4 weeks away now

no tickets...just pay on the door....it's all happening in the North West again.....what a way to kick off February and celebrate Valentine's as well with the music you JUST LOVE!!

Great buzz on this at Prestwich on Saturday...People talking with great fondness about the place in their hearts Lowton has with many people returning to the scene after carving careers, having kids and just growing up generally. The main thing though was the music policy at Lowton which was basically 'Keep it Real' and because of that a lot of great records played there over the years and made big in their own right.

20 years and still going strong......Definitely something to celebrate IMHO

Point in case, From Dec 2006 ................Freddie Williams-Name in Lights-Hollywood
Quote: "Heard this for the first time at Lowton Civic Hall. I had such a big gap between events that it was almost a rebirth into the scene with regard to songs I had either never heard or were wiped from my conscience".

Here's one of my favourites, not only memeories of the old Casino Sharon Scott, cover up but for some a new memory, as I recently heard someone say they heard it for the first time at Lowton only a few months ago.....what a feeling that must of been

sounding like people are travelling and making a concerted effort to not miss this one...and so it should be...after all Lowton has given to the cause, it's deserving of a return of the favor.. a lot of people have a good many great memories of the last 20 years, and Lowton has been prominent amongst them...a fantastic array of dj's from all over, live artists, even 3 rooms on the go, including the legendary DDA!!.......car park full and not a spare blade of grass either!, a complete who's who of record vendors....Lowton, personally to me, was a staging post to getting back into the scene again.....i swore i was never going to buy any records any more..when i first set foot in the building, i spied all of these wonderful boxes,..like leaping salmon...all wanting me to get my hook into them...a spent £60 that night ( dosn't sound a lot, does it?, in 2001 ), i got PAT BROWN for £30...what's it's value now eh?...i bought between 20 and 30 tunes. largely impossible to do that now,...but, i was off and running again!!.....i love Lowton as much as i did then, and am so happy to be part of the organization...lets make sure everyone enjoys reliving the memories and make it a soulfully successful anniversary!!:yes::hatsoff2:

Hi Shorty, Yes had some problems with the heating in the back room last time out. Everything working in the Main room so decided to stick with that for this Friday. No doubt there'll be a good smattering of quality 70's on offer in the main room. Ginger not averse to dropping the likes of Lil Major Williams, True Image and Hamilton Movement plus I know Bob loves his soulful 70's with Ujima, Brothers and Sisters, Alfie Davidson and Flame and King always in the playbox....there'll definitely be something for all tastes on Friday

Last but definitely not least, of the Lowton Top 5's comes from originator and main man Kev Murphy. Kev's love of this venue and passion for the music is undoubted. He's steered the course of the Northern Room all the way through the years, breaking many of the sounds at have come out of Lowton and is always dropping quality Northern Soul on to the decks.....

Kev Murphy Current Fave Raves
Sheppard Boy Angel Baby
Victors Not Only A Girl Knows
Earl Cosby Ohh Honey Baby
Larry Davis You Don’t Love Me
