Trouble is I'm not sure what I'm buying i.e. is a Bobby Sheen for £8 a good buy, am I buying a rubbish pressing or do I hold out and pay top money for a quality piece of vinyl?

Hi Linda good luck in your quest , if you're going to DJ then you'll probably need original vinyl in most cases , not saying this is right or wrong , just a fact .Buy what you enjoy yourself , only what you can afford , try and get a good mix of cheaper but great sides , mixed in with the harder to find sides . It will take years and you'll never get everything , but thats part of the magic I think .Try and listen to some collectors tapes /CD's of lesser known things and buy those as they often go up in value .And if you DJ just be your own person with your own identity .Good luck !! Right Linda , you can start by looking in my sales box

The best place for value for money is e-bay(worldwide)....at least for starters. You will then find associated sites of set sale lists....etc. Do you know, some tunes can be picked up with a nice picture cover on the european issues..French, spanish, in particular...I even bought a yugoslavian temps picture cover for about 3 euros...Personally i would love to have a box full of european picture sleeves-and issues...great t look at...you'll pick them up a bit cheaper and they'd be a great talking point. I actually missed out on an Oh Linda picture cover( leroy taylor, sorry) spanish or french issue. looked beautiful.

If you want to D.J as has been mentioned, ovo is the order of the day...not always, but usually. However the original vinyl is always as it should be sound quality wise....The vast Majority of boot legs are after all a cheap copy, usually sounding like it also....

I think, most importantly....think about what "you" want to buy. Change all your guide books valuations to dollars instead of quids....And Don't go Mad....Also a good place to look is on ebay under "soul lot". Where you will find batches of records for sale where 10 might be solid oldies, 10 may be slow and crap and ten may be nice records with a surprisingly great flip. And ten again might end up being country and western, but if you pay say 40- 50 dollars for the batch and ten oldies can be sold on for a fiver each over here you've the chance to make a little money too, and ensure your investments are wise financialy.

....OOh and ALWAYS PLAY THE FLIP SIDE FIRST, I think it will help you establish your own Personal taste more, and is great fun when it is a good one.

..so, in summary

Buy as cheap as humanly possible...always E to M-.

Buy what you like....Not what somebody tell's you you'd like

Look at a bit of a quirk to what you will collect, make it interesting for yourself.(and others)

Try and stick to original vinyl....(if you start buying boots, you'll get to a point where you'lll only want to buy original vinyl. so you'd have wasted most of the money you spend and you'll have to start again buying the originals)

My advice would be, always buy what you like and not what you think will get you a DJ spot. Never have a 45 in your playbox you don't enjoy.

Where to start? With a large bank balance preferably and no desire to spend money on other things for the rest of your days on earth

try to resist the temptation of buying the first copy you see of a want unless it is cheap offcourse. If its expensive chances are another cheaper copy will be along soon enough.... i'm sure we have all made this mistake of jumping in

try and only buy records where you have a good idea of value / rarity.

ebay is best place to buy plenty of bargains on there.

also gemm can be a good place to check.

Buy a copy of John Manships bootleg guide, it's invaluable. In fact I'm very disappointed that he hasn't bothered to update it. Instead of trying to combine it with the price guide, which doesn't work in my humble opinion.

My advice (for what its worth !! )...

1. Buy only records you like

2. Look out for the many £10 records out there which are great be not played

3. Dont chase the "big tunes" it will cost you big money

4. Use ebay - suggest watching a few items you like to see what they go thru for.

5. Be careful of price guides - records are like other commodities they go up and down in price based on rarity, demand etc

6. Be original - there are many "DJ's" out there that have a box of 50 oldies which are regurgitated every week

7. Dont be a mint freak - rarer records in lesser condition will play OK and cost you less

8. Keep an eye on the sales forum - can usually see bargins

9. Try the wants section if you really need something

10. Stay with original vinyl

You could have a good old peruse through Refosoul (when it's running again) It's a fantastic catalogue of Soul music covering the entire spectrum. Many cheap tunes amongst the zillions of posted tunes. It's a great way to hear new stuff and get some great ideas.

I think you should find the answers to these questions before you start buying.

Otherwise you will find that quite a number of people will be reaching for the mint sauce!

You should first buy Mr Manship's latest guide and look at how to tell what has been bootlegged and what hasn't. Remember to subtract at least 30% from his guide prices so you know roughly what to pay.

If you are planning to DJ then the list you put up isn't much cop as everyone has them; has heard them and doesn't want to really hear them all again (at least not all at the same time).

Most people collect records and then decide they want to DJ or get asked. If you want to buy records just to be a DJ you will need a big house and no mortgage as you'll need to sell it to fund the record buying spree required to fill a decent 200 box for a set.

Planning to DJ is a bit of a joke phrase really because unless you are really good you won't get any sets. The only other way is to have hideously rare or exclusive records and then you can get booked at the chinstokers dos (back to selling the house here). Or start your own night if you can find a venue. To be honest there are more more DJ's than dancers these days anyway.

Dundee Davie's advice was best - don't do it.

Alternatively, if you are under 25, just buy CD's, bootlegs and compilation albums and play them to your mates to get them interested in the music. Start your own night in a decent venue and have a strict "nobody over 30" policy on the door. You'll have much more fun, you won't have anyone clouding your vision with 40 years of NS politics and bullsh*t and the music might transfer to a new generation.

Alternatively, if you are under 25, just buy CD's, bootlegs and compilation albums and play them to your mates to get them interested in the music. Start your own night in a decent venue and have a strict "nobody over 30" policy on the door. You'll have much more fun, you won't have anyone clouding your vision with 40 years of NS politics and bullsh*t and the music might transfer to a new generation

I don't think you need a playbox full of £1k records to do an original set, you could be far more creative and build a playbox of underplayed and unknowns that mark you out as something different and original, without paying much over a few hundred quid for some sounds and less than £50 for most. Yes it's true most people can reproduce a set of cheapies if they spent some time looking, but no one ever does because they all play safe and stick to the tried and tested. Unfortunately the most commonly reproduced sets are those with the big sounds because lots of nighter DJs pick up on the same sounds, for example at least five DJs are playing that Herb Johnson cover up out at the moment (am i allowed to say what it really is yet?) and it's become overplayed imo, but there are thousands of cheapies that aren't played out regularly. The most overplayed records on the scene aren't the £5 cheapies of quality, they are the £1k biggies that only several DJs have, but get play out every single time.

And unfortunately, unless you got a good set of records, and bit of experience behind you, you won't be taken seriously by some of the die hard guys 'cos your a woman!

I been elbowed many a time whilst looking through record boxes over the years!!

And its not always what you know, but who you know will get you some spots.

First win loads on the lotto..... £200,000 a good staring point ...then retain a record a dealer or two and give them £100,000 grand each and send them off to buy you a collection (originals only). Start DJ lessons...

Keep a list of the big tunes you want and buy them as and when they come up at a price you're willing to pay.

Trawl ebay for sellers that have sound clips with their listings and listen to all the ones you don't know. They might not be in great demand and you can pick up some blinding forgotten or underplayed tracks really cheap. This also saves hours/days/weeks/months of searching for that tune you've uncovered. I used to buy blind but after so many disappointments tend to use this method myself.

I think I'm going to stop posting as whatever I say seems to be taken the wrong way.

Just read my post through again and there is only one "don't" and that is somebody else's.

Everything else I said I meant sincerely. I thought there was some good advice there like "know what you are buying before starting to buy or you may be soundly ripped off", JM's price & bootleg guide, etc.

I wasn't saying your taste in records is not much cop but people expect DJ's to play their own style, something different and/or "big" records.

In any case WHATEVER you play you can't please everyone, and you'll never be fully prepared for the shocking things people say to you when you are doing a set. And that isn't just my experience If what I've posted has offended you, wait until someone comes up and says "are you going to play this head-nodding shit all night?" as happened to an aquaintance of mine recently (who had a full dance floor at the time).

Even my last comment was completely serious. Somebody mentioned that you were a lot younger than many on here, as most are in their 40's and 50's I thought possibly you were in your 20's.

I'm trying to put together a collection with the hope of eventually djing (it's been lifelong ambition, just never had the bottle).

I know what I want to buy, just not sure if I can ever get hold it?

My wants range from Reuben Howell through to Prince Phillip Mitchell, Sergio Mendes through to Susan Barratt with a multitude of roads off in between.

Trouble is I'm not sure what I'm buying i.e. is a Bobby Sheen for £8 a good buy, am I buying a rubbish pressing or do I hold out and pay top money for a quality piece of vinyl?

Sometimes I feel playing the tune is the thing, othertimes I think it only right to play quality vinyl (no pressings, bootlegs etc) am I being naive?

I really want my collection to grow but, it could take forever to get stuff and then some I may never get anyway.

Your advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated, kindest regards Linda

You are in a similar position to me 12/18 months ago. Although i've no intention of getting into the DJ thing....just enjoying building a collection of sounds i've fallen in love with over the years. I've helped DJ a few scooter events, which i really enjoy, but the bag is always so mixed that laptops, cd's and vinyl go hand in hand without anyone sneering at me. Now though, I'm in need of original vinyl. I have to save hard for my "wants". My budget is small because i work part time but I still get by. Like You, I don't want shoes, handbags or the lastest copy of Hello magazine.

Be prepared for this though.... Some weeks, I have to walk the 8 miles to work beacuse i can't afford the bus or go without lunch because..... i had to have that 45! I've been cut off the net and phone until my bill was paid beacuse..... i had to have that 45!! I've cried like a baby when i've been sniped at the last minute (that happened sunday) Because i don't know how to snipe.....I've set my alarm clock for 3,4,5am watching items on ebay that are finishing in the US. Don't get me wrong, the joys of waiting up and then winning the track is utterly superb!

Shout up for your wants on Soul Source. People will help you if they can! Make an offer if the price isn't quite right for your budget also. I recently wanted 2 45's from a sales list posted on here but couldn't afford both, so i made an offer for the 2 and it was accepted. I was over the moon!! If you buy a 45 and you are not happy with it....send it back!! Even if its cheap. Why should you pay return postage for something that wasn't "as described"??? I've wasted alot of money thinking....It's not worth it because it was only a few quid. After discussions, a fair refund is always better than neg feedback.

Buy what YOU like! Not just for a floor reaction but its YOUR reaction that should count. No matter how quirky or obscure. I can hear great oldies everyday of the week but nothing gets my attention more than hearing something new and different. The personality of Djs reflects in what they play!!

Enjoy Your future addiction/illness....thats what it'll become!! I wake and as i'm lighting a cigarette and flicking the kettle switch on, i then turn on ebay and the sales list on soul source before i've even had time to wipe the sleep from my eyes!

You will dread birthdays and christmas because it means taking money from your buying budget Linda....how dare they!!!

Popsike is a good place to check out the price of tunes, you get an idea of what the price was a few years back compared to now, you get to see the labels and how often they come up for sale, set yourself a top figure and stick by it cos many tunes are always available time and again, buy from your heart and play from your heart and grow a thick skin,

I totally agree with the people who say that you have to become a collector before you become a DJ. Collecting records can be an expensive hobby, and a lot of money can be wasted if not spend right.

There a lot of great soul music to be had on 7" single for cheap. You might hear a tune thinking it wont be too expensive, but the price will be sky high, and you might hear another one thinking it will be expensive, and you find out that it is not nearly as much as you thought.

I would say: start out buying the cheap stuff for a while (you can get ALOT of great stuff) before you start paying big money.

When buying cheapies, shipping costs will sometimes cost more than the record itself so you can economize by finding a dealer you has a handful or more records that you would like to buy. A good place to start is: https://www.45heaven.com/ He has a nice selection of records which are well priced. A lot of dealers are overpriced IMO, but this guy has nice prices. You will find nice records for as cheap as £2.
