Nearly fell off my chair whilst looking at John Manship auctions today

A multi coloured copy with two days to go and currently at £200

But after reading the item description it came to light ,just why it is at the £200 mark?

Although no promo's have been found ,this copy has a in-house rubber stamp proclaiming "WAY OUT PRESENTS"....

Seeing this i suddenly remembered my copy having some black ink,that i'd not taken much notice of .

Admittedly John's copy has a more authentic stamp but wondered how many other's have copies bearing such logo's ??

I actually heard this song on Cleveland radio back in 1971. The instrumental flip was used as a music 'bed' for some Cleveland radio station promos also. This record was probably one of Way Out's best sellers, deservedly so.

The white label copies (they are stock/issues, not promo/demo) are rarer, but not by much. There is different mastering/EQ between the two versions.

You're right. It is a stock copy, not a white demo/dj copy with the instrumental flip WAITING. The title is spelled 'YOUR' and not 'YOU'RE'. And stamped in the dead wax with what looks a curly serif type script.

Ive often thought my multi coloured was a bit muffled I'd like to here the other to compare, do they both have the same B sides?

As far as i was aware the Multi is the better produced version.

Sold a copy two weeks ago on soul source for £80, to be honest there were three people interested.

However when I listed if for slightly more a couple of weeks earlier , no interest.

It may be worth more but the price to sell as Nev suggests is £75 - £80

Surely that 'smudge' devalues the record - its no better than a record classed as 'WOL', the madness of record collecting knows no bounds

Thankfully I got my copy for a quid from Soul Bowl when it was being played at the time. Most definately remember hearing the instrumental side played at Wigan

Indeed it was - hence my pleasant surprise when I heard - albeit the inst. - played at Wigan

Incidentally at the time - when readily available - it was the multi coloured version - its only recent years I've seen the white one.

It was a Mecca spin,but was also spun about the same time at Clee.Seem to think it was CC who used to play it,then again could have been "He who we don't mention" .Where's Mel Brat - he usually clears these things up.

My multi coloured one which I bought for £6 in early 90's is slightly off centre...anyone got the same?

Still playable if u line it up right just a bit difficuilt if you are DJ'ing and had 8 pints!

P.S. I'll ask CC if it was him who played on 29th December!

It can be played! I've seen loadsa good stuff pressed slightly off centre. Sometimes only the label's been stuck on to the vinyl off centre. Try lining it up and cueing it in with two fingers and your thumb around the spindle and don't use a centre...

A bit of old sticker residue on the flip... What`s an easy method to remove this?

They had run out of the current multi-coloured labels so recycled some blank red/white ones (hence the mis-spelling of You're). Which makes the multi-coloured one the first press.

edit: Though the red/white is rarer. Also I believe there are other later issues on the label which are red/white labels?

I may have dreamt this though as I have the multi coloured copy (and thankfully only paid about £25 for it some years ago).

Perhaps someone could do a search for the offending thread? (I can never find anything I'm afraid).

The Jesse Fisher record was reported in a Cleveland paper as getting play on three local radio stations, this was November or December of 1971. Assume then the record was released around October/November of 1971. I actually have a vague memory of hearing it, but I could be fooling myself.

As noted, the two pressing have different EQ/masterings. The red/white one is inferior to the red/yellow one, IMO and I think most everyone would agree. One reason is pretty obvious - the width of the track on the red/white one is smaller, meaning less groove 'space' and usually that means less fidelity. The acetates for both were probably cut at Boddie, as Tom Boddie's mark is in the dead wax. They were wise not to press them there! I think both were ARP pressings, like most of the post MGM Way Outs.

I really don't think the record was repressed a couple years later....things moved too fast back then. I'm going to ASSUME that the red/white was first and the inferior fidelity was noted and the record remastered. Also since the record was a local 'hit' there would have been a possible need to repress in 'real time'. There's a couple other clues I need to look at.

The perspective of availability is very interesting, I suspect one reason being that the red/white ones were mainly distributed in the Cleveland area and the red/yellow ones had more stock available, so when the record was discoverd by the UK scene and copies exported they took the available back stock, which was red/yellow. Again, I'm just speculating here.

Regarding the date for the Sensations 'Demanding Man', late 1969 or early 1970 is correct. The previous Way Out 45, by the Harmonics (label number 2003/4, Sensations is 2005) is from late 1969, I am working to confirm a more exact date.

How many of you know that one member of the Sensations later played in the rock band Rainbow Canyon who had a LP (in the US)? I think he was out of the group by the time Demanding Man was recorded. I'm trying to get an interview with him.

Have replaced it since with a Red/White copy but I'm now having second thoughts, especially if the multi colored one has better fidelity

Just played them one after the other and to be honest neither are brilliant pressings. George is correct in stating that the track width is slightly wider on the multi-coloured copy and is slightly louder. Both suffer from what I can only describe as cloudiness. One channel of the multi-coloured copy I have has pronounced distortion during the louder/higher notes.

I think the theory about the coloured stock coming over here en-masse is probably right. Several people who bought the record in the UK in the mid 70s have stated on here that they didn't see the red and white copy until relatively recently.

A shame that the master transfer is so poor on the record as in my opinion it's one of the greatest tracks ever played on the Northern scene. It has everything really: committed vocal, fantastic song, breaks, drama, the lot really.

One channel of the multi-coloured copy I have has pronounced distortion during the louder/higher notes.

Do you know if all multicoloured copies are like that? I've had to send back 2 multicoloured ones because they were described as M- but played with distortion in one channel. I kind of "gave up" on that record after those two...

I have a few bits to do but give me 1hr and i'll upload my copy and see if we can pin point the exact noise distortion ???

i got one cheap in a pack from mary boyland (boylands conisbrough) when she was finishing with the records. 5 records in a brown bag 4 a quid, i wrote ONLY ONE tho in front of way out, memories are price less. sold it about year eight ago.
