REMEMBER...... keep repeating the move before speeding it up - keep pausing the DVD until you are confident with the move before moving on. This is particularly relevant to the intermediate DVD's which are quite complicated.

If the lady wants to make a bit of money teaching others how to dance then so be it, good luck to her. And please spare me the "this is commercialism" line - several years ago at a weekender Tim A and myself were discussing the fact that there were more clothes stalls in evidence than there were record stalls! It was a shocking revelation. The complete comercialism of NS has been there for years now - everything from car stickers, to birthday cards that play Frank Wilson. I even succumbed at one point and purchased a "Darrell Banks London demo" mug to drink me tea out of So why not some lady who teaches people to dance?

The way I see it the majority of the NS scene today is just a retro revival scene playing the same 200 records like the Teddy Boys / Rockabilly lot and some would say now what remains of the scooterists. There is nothing "cool" or "underground" about this brand of NS at all and if you want to find a scene that sticks closely to the original principles of NS - well there are a few obvious clubs and promotors, but you have to search them out.

So unless you are all going to give the handbag sellers at the weekenders a hard time as well, and berate Johnny Vaughn for his cringeworthy TV "send ups" leave this woman to her classes and her happy punters......who presumably can now do airplane spins without knocking the beer tables over -unlike me.

As for Winstanley, well why would anyone be surprised he is popping up on a commercial NS site? - his contribution to the soul scene since Wigan closed has only been to harp on about Wigan Casino endlessly and try and recreate it in increasingly bizarre locations - at least this time he has travelled beyond the boundaries of Wigan for once, up as far as Preston.........yipee doo!

Perhaps it's time to be serious about re-employing the term "rare soul" again so as to distance ourselves from the pungent smell of overt commercialism that hangs over NS.......but only on condition that the usual suspects don't start posting up how many good records are not "rare" (we know that)....

Even given your well know Wigan obsession, I can never get my head round why you always defend him almost without thought Mark. Maybe if you actually sat down and wrote down what musically and integrity wise you could tangibly defend him on it would be a stronger defence, I suspect it would be a short and very time boxed response though...

"Rare Soul" gets my vote Steve, ....has done for a very long time now. The Northern tag defined an underground scene that was cool and different from the mainstream, and one that's spirit was fuelled by unknown, underplayed and fresh music. A million miles from where the vast majority want it to be today, content with reliving their very brief involvement in an original scene.

There have been two scenes, Rare and Northern since (before) Wigan closed, and over the years the distance between the two has become wider, to the point where now only the music style is common between the two.

Northern dance lessons is just another embarrassment to add to the ever growing list of reasons to avoid eye contact with people you meet who tell you they're into Northern, Motown and Duffy....it's a different world...

i dont mind rare soul either as long as its good....

sadly over the years theres too much dreary mid-tempo and average dancers ...but then again its only an opinion

This is only my opinion..............But i dont really agree with Northern Soul dance classes, because its more of a social night out & there is no set steps, so nothing to learn not like Latin & Ballroom, where you have Cuban Breaks, Reverse Cortays, Alamar Turns, Vulta pogos, etc etc............there are hundreds of steps to learn, all with various names, so you have to go to classes

The basic steps in Lindy is really easy to pick up, but if you want to add the Charleston steps, you need to take the classes

One of the biggest problems over the yrs imho is the pigeon holing of soul records.

"Northern soul" in the 70's was predominently a dance scene ....records were selected for their dancability factor ..that's not to say they were all mid to up-tempo ,but on the whole it was about young people going to allnighters and dancing their merry little arses off.

Sure there were a lot of quality records but in my opinion the quality of the soul is far superior today ,

I remember oldies and modern being the two different words to describe records back then ...not rare /xover /RnB or any other genre .

Back on track..why is it people slate Russ/Levine so much and not people like Richard Searling /Dave Evison and many other big names that were top dj's back then ..you can stick up for him all you like but "you make your bed and you lie in it"

P.s After witnessing some of the shocking, mock wigan -esque, wanna be dancers at a lot of venues over the last few yrs ,they'd be better off having a try with some of the dreary mid-tempo stuff ..itd be a lot easier for me to stomach come to think of it ,if that lady can teach em to dance a bit better ...good luck to her

I dont like modern music or modern clothes, so i dont listen to it & i dont wear them!

P.s Fancy Dress is a Batman or Robin costume that you hire for an evening out, & i have not seen anyone wearing that!

I have to agree with you Debbie,Northern soul isnt a dance that can be taught....its more a case of tidying up what you know....it is one of those things you "feel" if you can see what i mean....theres nothing wrong in wanting to learn the basic steps,after all we learnt through watching the dancers at soul venues or practicing new moves with our mates while looking at our reflections in shop windows!....in my opinion(and this is only my opinion and i dont mean this in an offensive way)but most soulies are born to it....you have to know what you're reaching out for when feeling for the music....thats just my way of expressing the way to do northern soul.

Personally speaking, I'm not quite sure where I fit into your view of what the Northern Soul scene means as I'm a bit of a c*nt so I don't have many friends. I have no sense of humour so don't have many laughs, I don't have anythign interesting to say to people so no one wants to talk to me, I find most DJs on the scene play a load of old tosh so half the time I look like a miserable sod and often leave venues early because I get bored.

But Northern Soul does mean a lot to me, more than going out with mates for a few laughs, and to listen to a few good tunes. And so much so that at times the rest of life seems to become a bit of an anoying irrelevance.

Because of this, personally speaking, I find the way these dance classes are presented embarrassing, almost insulting.

I agree James. One half of me agrees with Steve that we shouldn't really care what the public view of our scene is, but when people on the scene represent us to the public through TV programmes like Paul O'Grady as a 70s nostlgia scene (even in 2010) i feel sad, annoyed and embarrassed. Personally speaking, I'm not quite sure where I fit into your view of what the Northern Soul scene means as I'm a bit of a c*nt so I don't have many friends. I have no sense of humour so don't have many laughs, I don't have anythign interesting to say to people so no one wants to talk to me, I find most DJs on the scene play a load of old tosh so half the time I look like a miserable sod and often leave venues early because I get bored.

But Northern Soul does mean a lot to me, more than going out with mates for a few laughs, and to listen to a few good tunes. And so much so that at times the rest of life seems to become a bit of an anoying irrelevance.

Because of this, personally speaking, I find the way these dance classes are presented embarrassing, almost insulting.

I understand what your saying ............Northern Soul does mean alot to all of us on here, that is why we are so passionate about what we do, but its also a bonus to have a few laughs & some fun whilst doing it

If you ever see myself & my friends at a venue..........you can't miss us! ..............come over & join us, we are a friendly bunch & even if you dont have anything interesting to say, you will be made welcome

How do folk know that you're not a bit crap and you're going to teach them to be a bit crap too?

There aren't any video clips on the website to suggest any evidence to the contrary.

Very crass and unpleasant all of this. Said it before and I'll say it again, soul music - in through the ears and out through the legs. If the soul doesn't move you, then perhaps soul isn't for you. That and pull the curtains in your living room and have a practice. Don't pay ninety (count em) pounds to a cheesy chancer!

The funny thing is............None of you have the guts to go up to the dj's playing the records & moan to them about what they play, or to go up to the folk wearing the clothes you dont like & tell them to there face, you just hide behind a keyboard & moan
