I collected together a whole load of tracks people on here associated with Yate about this time last year. If I get a chance to hunt out the file at Lunchtime I will stick them on here. We may even get a few more to add to the list.

I'm sure Yate broke many sounds but on my two visit the only trach I can remember hearing there for the first time was Marva Whitney - Looking Back Over My Shoulder. In fact I bought it on the strength of hearing it then. Like I say must have broke other stuff but the biggest tunes there appeared to me at least to be the big tunes anywhere.

Obscurity will play its part, but take the highlighted track by the Shamettes. I am pretty sure the only other venue I've heard this played in, was when Irish Greg gave it plays at the Dome.

capitols was first played here by the mighty IAN CLARKE.........however l went round to steve cooper from bedford the next day and yep he had a nice mint issue that he,d got from myles grayson TWO years earlier which he sold to me for 26 english pounds...peggy b

It's going to be a bit inconclusive, this thread, I think. How do you gauge the biggest records? I suppose it has to be dance floor reaction. And if that is the case there would be dozens. Let's not forget this was back in the day when people were far more "energetic". Yate was also very oldies orientated, even then. Clarkie was always the most forward thinking dj there, although most of us had our moments.

The crowd there were great. You probably could'nt have cleared the floor with a hand grenade at any time of the night. So if you can figure out the most popular records played there, well done!! I always remember these three from my box doing pretty well.

I didn't actually go to Yate!..... but my friend Pete who is here with me did! and he says: Dobie Gray - Honey You Can Take it Back was a huge play at Yate

also the other big one from Dobie Gray on White Whale was probably first played at Yate ... supplied by one of the Welsh boys!

2. Went by train and fell asleep (not actually on the train)

3. Got caught in a freak snow storm (end of April) Spent the night in Membury Services

Don't think upstairs was open every fortnight, but there was bit of a Jazz Funk/Mecca thing going on up there for a while. Also at least one Motown night - hence my comment above. I really liked it up there but it could be a bit dodgy - it was a bit darker and some of the naughtier side of our fraternity used to seem to prefer it up there. Plus there was more room (cos obviously not everyone knew about it) for all the nutters to f*ck about up there - so they did. Remember the Brum crowd up there tripping their tits off and having a right laugh at everyone else's expense .

Sorry Jerry but I remember this really well. Me and Mark went junking in Wiltshire on a Saturday. Got a load of Chess R&B stuff for nothing in Swindon which I gave away a while later (wasn't worth anything in those days) to Eamesy I think.

Got f**k all everywhere else we went until we landed in Chippenham - loads of 60's pop including Muriel Day which we both know was (and still is) utter shite, but it was massive at Wigan at the time. We sold it to you (£10?) - as I recall you didn't want it for its aesthetically pleasing soulful qualities, but you knew it would go down well on the dancefloor. Some dastardly cad nicked it off you before you played it.

I know for a fact it wasn't the same dastardly cad who taught the big headed kid with loads of money, and top sounds that nobody could buy or play, a lesson though!

Was probably my favourite all nighter after Wigan, only missed one till about October 79. Played in the little upstairs room a few times, wasn't open for many nights tho - i don't think! As Greety said - hardly ever any room on the dance floor.

Used to enjoy the fun in the back room behind DJ box, lots of fun in there - some high stakes card games too!!

Well remember being barred from just about every local pub on Sundays, till we settled at The Dog i think - quite often still in car park at 5pm Sunday.

The venue was there last time I went. Ironically the shop closest to it was called Superdrug.

I only ever went into the other room once. There was a card game going on with some very serious guys. There was enough money on the table to have made a serious dent in the number of records for sale.

I never tire of recalling memories of what was imo one of the best alnighter venues ever.................the BJ Thomas track was of course 'I Don't Have A Mind Of My Own' .....The Miracle Workers I still have in my box, cheap as chips but priceless to me, I used to have a 12" of Mirslav Vitos - New York City, Dave Thorley used to spin a track by George 'someone', can't remember the track title either, mid tempo with bongos....all I can recall is that it used to get me a bit emotional....I have a tape somewhere that I recorded one night, I'll look for it & list the plays.

I used to nag Rob Anthony to play this at least twice at every Porthcawl nites.......yep it was my fault the mortal sin of playing a tune more than once took place:blush: but it was usually at 8pm as soon as we got through the door for the first spin

but the whole bus had had to listen to it at least 3 times on the way there

Definatly a lift .....................................................I think .

Getting all kinds of self doubt about the lay out of the place now , the lift was , if I remember right , on the wall to your left if you were looking at the decks across the dance floor from the pool table over the top of the dwarf wall . Someone else will have to tell you where the lift was in relation to the aledged smaller room upstairs as I still can't remember that

I only went up in the lift the once , so I may have its position wrong . I'm glad someone has confirmed there was a lift , I was begining to think I was going senile ..............I wish there were more photo's of Yate knocking about , I had some great times there but unlike Wigan , St Ives etc etc there don't seem to be many images to remind me of the exact layout of the place
