2) Brian Rae.......for giving me lifts everywhere in his Vauxhall Cavilier and never turning down a record request from me.....Oh and giving me loads of fags....

3) Richard Searling......For trying to keep Wigan Soulful.....and being pleasant and friendly.......Same for the two above

I wasn't around back in the day, so I can only really comment on dj's who do the buisness everytime without fail which in all honesty there's not many!

Karl Heard -has the ability to bring the floor to life like no other dj, has been at the top of the pile since i first seen him around 2/3 years ago

always pushing boundaries and can mix it up with various different styles: uptempo, mid-tempo, Rnb, boogaloo, funk, jazz etc. They're Proper dj's, if you put them in a club they'll get the place rocking where as a lot of northern dj's/collectors would fall flat on thier arse and probably get booed off the premises

Without wishing to be disrepectful (yeah, you're right, I am going to be....) only dj's from about 20+ years ago (Butch and Searling excluded, really count.

Why because? they knew which way was up, they knew what a soul record sounded like and they knew you didn't have to play pop (Poke's Joan Moody cover up aside).

There were many other exceptional dj's over the years, but they were my favourites. Can't say as I have heard a 'northern' dj in 20 years that I would have paid in washers.

Obviously a personal point of view, and one that I don't expect everyone to agree with.

Never heard Andy play out,though I occasionally talk to him becaue of work., He is a really nice guy, a great collector, hugely knowledgable and is a gifted detective. Ady is also a very nice chap - and clearly his work with Kent is of considerable benefit to us all - a top three dj? now possibly, I'll let you be the judge of that. But not in my top three. As for Dave, I have bought records off him, never heard him play. Is he any good?

Yes we have done this thread before, but I think the accent may have been more on the influence of the DJs in question on your life. I'm pretty sure I had Buchanan, Thorley & Clarkie, with an honourable mention to Ady Croasdell for sucking me into the scene in the first place.

Today's answer - who would I travel for?

1. Adam Buchanan - psychic link to my soul, perfect blend of 60s & modern. Sexiest DJ in the country

2. Pete Eccles - no-one rams an oldies dancefloor, reads it perfectly and keeps it full, like the Cakeboy. Sexiest DJ in, er, Kilsby Close

3. Dave Thorley - no-one pushes the boundaries, spins a tune, or twirls a cape for that matter, like DT Iranu indeed

Rixy at his peak in the early 90s was one of the few collector/DJs that could get me on a plane to UK. Greety can still get me sniffin' in interest as to what he's currently playing. As can Karl Heard.

Nearly right, Russ did have Yvonne Baker before Ian, but at the time he was playing it off a emidisc from Simon S. not a Parkway copy.

Within a matter of weeks both playing Parkway copies, Ian's came off John A. not sure where Russ's came from but as a guess Simon.

That's the story I heard from Ian Levine.

I don't think Ian believed Y. B. was a real record at 1st.

Phil the last time I spoke to Robin, he told me Pete had come in from the cold and made contact, cause Pete, I am lead to believe still lives in Sweden or was it Denmark somewhere ?

We still see and hear regularly from Louise Goodburn, Pete's ex who now lives in Scotland.

1 - Alan Day (or was it Colin Curtis?) circa Mecca / Torch days - Great records but just as good was his clear voiced style of banter in between the records, keeping the audience informed as to what was being played and to what it was they were dancing their heads off to.

2 - Liverpool's Billy Butler circa Mardi Gras / Cavern days - Great records (mostly British) with a hilarious style of banter in between the records.

3 - Ian Levine - Just brilliant records!!! QED.

If I can remember correctly , the WG was the place where Luther's " Never Too Much " ( off the US Epic album ) got it's first plays in the South Yorkshire area ....... can you confirm ?

I wll cite the Peterborough trio of Andy 'Smudge' Smith, Gary Spencer and Paul Donnelly. They were instrumental in my formative years and without whom it simply wouldn't have happened for me. The first 60 count record box that I ever sifted through was one of theirs and who can forget how wondrous those US labels looked to 14 year old eyes. Gracias, gracias. Later on I liked John Vincent a lot, probably because he would play stuff like Matt Lucas and both sides of the Del-Larks and refused to cue out that rocky guitar solo in Taj Mahal's A Lot Of Love. He played the odd clunker too, but didn't they all? Soul Sam occupies second place, historically.

An extraordinary ear for a tune and boundless enthusiam. He's a joy to watch too. In first place, again historically, is Richard Searling. I think all superlatives fall short when describing this man's input throughout the Wigan years. Finally, what about a special category award for innovation and influence? Ian Levine & Colin Curtis had them all and played them all first and I'll forever regret not making a trip to Blackpool pre-76. Jumping into this century, I think Butch deserves the ultimate accolade of pez gordo supremo (supreme fat fish). He's combined the innovation of the Blackpool team with Sam & Richard's uncanny ear for a tune and possesses an engaging style too. Not forgetting my adopted homeland, over in Spain there are some great jocks too. Edu, David, Dani, Albert and Sergio all spin some incredible stuff and certainly know how to 'read' crowds and 'apply the medicine'.
