What is the deal with the Soul Scene now, is it just rare soul records going for silly money? Obvoiusly the core regulars still turn up and that inner scene goes on, but I cant help feeling the whole thing is crying out for a new direction... Soundsokeh Posted August 5, 2005 Share Posted August 5, 2005 (edited) as a new member here who went to wigan casino , dukinfield rugby club and the "highland laddie"in ashton under lyne about 30 years ago , I would agree and I want to know which of the places in my area ( tameside/manchester ) are worth going to now in terms of hearing the "oldies" on the northern scene ? ie:- I would like to goto a few revival nights or similar but I dont know which to try ? ( prestwich , middleton , bury , bolton , blackburn or the kings hall - stoke etc ) I cannot tell from the adverts or threads here which would suit a person like me who wants to go back to the early wigan days but cant , and I dont really like the "modern" soul as much as the golden oldies from the `70,s , and having read the playlists of some of the posts in here like the new manchester venue , it seems to be soul and not northern soul , unless I am not reading it correctly ? so it would be great to hear from people who goto these venues nowadays and can say if they are big , excellent , revival or modern etc at the moment it looks as if the stoke one with 2 big rooms and the well known jocks is a good one to start with as I dont think I will be disappointed due to the lineup etc thanks for reading Edited August 5, 2005 by soundsOKEH Link to comment Social source share More sharing options...

Mal.C. link I get Disillusioned with it all, I seem to want to go to new/different places now, many reasons, boredom, memories, etc. also want to listen to more modern as fed up with r&b, went to Ivor's do at Phoenix on Sat and had a great time, big crowd, atmosphere & music - wish more like that in London. I have been to various venues with a "younger" crowd in attendance but at times its not so much "getting" them in its keeping them in ... & thats down to "us" to welcome them as we were all those years ago ... now before you all go shouting "we do welcome them" there are people out there who dont want youngsters going. Having taken my 18yr old son to half a doz venues (in his words) he felt more welcomed at 1 or 2, the otheres he felt uncomfortable ... when I asked him what he meant by this he said it was about ... "feeling he was out of place ie what was he doing there" Now I know youngsters are welcomed in some places .... but not enough to keep them coming back ... & if we all cast our minds back to "how we got into it & who took us" youth clubs ect sisters / brothers there not there anymore ... most youth clubs are community halls "sisters/brothers" are parents or in most cases grandparents ... did you really want to go to a club with your mum /dad ect I know I wouldnt ... I would want to go with my own age group ..... and thats the key ... places for youngsters to listen to "soul" with there own age group ....
