Posted September 29, 201014 yr Just managed to get hold of the hard to find album that contains this I've been after this for a while now, but it's always gone for around £50-80. So chuffed that by a stroke of luck I managed to buy an excellent copy for would you believe £4.99 I really think this is the best version as do quite a few I have spoken to. What are your thoughts? Fire away!!! Edited September 29, 201014 yr by steveluigi
September 29, 201014 yr Its not for me Steve, lacks the vocal range & soulful emotion that Ray Pollard puts into his version. Also the arrangement is kind of twee & lacking in depth. As with all things, if your happy with it & enjoy this version ........ more power to ya, enjoy. Garv
September 29, 201014 yr Steve I like the Lohn John version.. (taking it as that is what it is, as the you tube link came up and I can't play at work) played it out a couple of times off the 45 but people don't seem to like it as much... out of intrest was the 45 sell for anyone?

It's a rare single, I got two off ebay last year, one was about 50 quid, the other I think I paid 19 quid, sold both for 100 each, very hard to find - good version too, not a patch on Ray but not bad at all.

September 29, 201014 yr Mr Luigi I've always liked LJB's version - hot chocolate smooth delivery yummy.. Doesn't have the highs that RP reaches but that's why I like it so much - the production is like a comfy chair.. Quality Blue Eyed Soul.. Bargain! ATB Greg.
September 29, 201014 yr I have not even listened to it and its sh*t to paraphrase Mr Smith. Had this debate back in 1874 about whether it was a good version and logic, while obviously not quite the same based on Pete's values, was not it isn't, its just easier to get hence people trying to convince themselves its better. LJB is a decent pub rock singer and this is a decent soulfulish pub rock song, its not soul, but as I agree that is more perception than some of the sh*t debated on here, I won't do my usual holler for Freebasing on this one! If however anyone mentions f***ing Phil f****ing Collins (unless literally with a sledgehammer) not only will I holler freebasing I will personally shoot the person mentioning Satan's spawn!

Good rant, I never mentioned Phil F*****g Collins and never would either (oops! just did) :-). I'm not trying either to convince myself that it is a better version, I genuinely think it is at least as good if not better and as stated in the first post, a lot of folk that i have played it also think the same, so Ner Ner!! LOL
September 29, 201014 yr Had the Spotlight On LJB album for years and I always like this version, in fact just as much if not more than Mr Pollard's version
September 29, 201014 yr Not bad I suppose, but it's a bit flat and LJB has taken something haunting and soulful and turned it into a pop song IMO. No emotion in it, and not a patch on Ray Pollard. - Kev.
September 29, 201014 yr Go and wash your ears out with soap Totally lacks the power and soul of Ray Pollard's version, IMHO of course.
September 29, 201014 yr everyone to their own taste mate, heard this donkey's years ago, made for mods maybe but soulful?....sorry oh, and by the way, chalks forgot to mention which type of soap.....good old fashioned carbolhic!!
September 29, 201014 yr Author So just as I expected then, mixed opinions. Good though to hear peoples different tastes and likes and dislikes. That's what it's all about. I'd bet though that many of the ones that prefer the Ray Pollard version, have it on original?? Edited September 29, 201014 yr by steveluigi
September 29, 201014 yr Ive got it but dont rate it. Don Charles' version on Parlophone is a different matter......
September 30, 201014 yr Jesus. You're all nuts. Has no one heard the Jimmy Radcliffe supposed demo of this which knocks the Ray and LJB covers into the bin? Ian D
September 30, 201014 yr For me it's too light and lacking the raw emotion that the lyrics need, there is no hurt in his voice. But each to his own.
September 30, 201014 yr I think it's hard to beat Ray Pollard's version, a truly wonderful record. Ian mentioned Jimmy Radcliffe's version, any chance of anyone posting it? Is it available or just an acetate?
September 30, 201014 yr Is it me but are all UA demo's vinyl and the issues styreen, as for the clip its the best I can do don't have the others.
September 30, 201014 yr COULD NEVER UNDERSTAND WHAT ALL THE FUSS WAS ABOUT THIS SONG ANYWAY, ALWAYS DEPRESSED THE HELL OUT OF ME..... PLEASE LOCK THIS THREAD AND SPARE US NO MORE OF THIS GARBAGE..... AND LETS HAVE SOME PROPER DANCE SOUL 60t's and 70t's
