Another thing to note: The "PLUG SIDE" "DON'T SAY GOODBYE"

presumably makes "IT'S GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME" the B Side.

At some point the B Side has been Promoted as the PLUG SIDE on the Double Sided DEMO, Strange.

Weren't there also a couple of Four Gents' recordings from Detroit's SVR label leased and put out out by HBR?

I don't have it in front of me but I know of the one Four Gents 45 on that label, a really excellent cover of The Impressions "I've Been Trying" with a sort of messy instrumental on the flip called "Soul Sister". Did they have more on the label? Is it the same Four Gents as the other 45's?

So, only one of The Four Gents' SVR singles was leased by HBR. They were the same Four Gents that were on Detroit's Oncore Records, but not the same as some other, earlier Four Gents groups from other parts of USA. One of those was a Chicago group from 1954-58, who recorded for Park Records in 1957. Later producer/arranger Eddie Sullivan was a group member.

Robb, I think the HBR / Liberty four gents are from Flint and are NOT the same group as on Encore. There used to be a webpage for the HBR group that gave group membership also (can't find it now but I do find another page talking about Frank from Flint): Frank Randall, Sherwood Pea, George Early, Ronald Cooley. There are also no common names between the Encore records and HBR / Liberty records. Do you have any evidence that they are the same group besides both being from Michigan? Thanks.

No I don't have any evidence that they are the same group. I think one or two people on Soulful Detroit said that is what they had heard. But they and I could have read that from Internet sources that were founded, originally, from rumours that originated from guessing, based on the fact thatboth were Michigan labels, and there was'nt a long gap between their releases. I assume, then, that The Oncore group broke up before the Flint group started, otherwise the Flint group should have heard of the Detroit group. The Detroit group was known for making local appearances in The Detroit Area.

it's a pretty generic name, and there are lots of cases of same named groups in the same city or adjacent cities. for example, there was an enchanters in chicago, gary, and milwaukee. there was a traits in chicago and gary. etc.

Yes, it's not like The Four Gents on Oncore sold a million copies and got a lot of Detroit radio airplay. I don't even know if they got any airplay in Detroit, let alone Flint. Apparently, The Four Gents in Flint didn't hang out in Detroit at all, to know that The other Four Gents made some local appearances there. And, likely, the first group was already split up, when the other started.

Pye Records set up the HBR label in the UK, releasing at least three singles. Sadly, none of them have anything to do with soul, or even pop!

Just the one HBR and a couple of pre HBR labels from me.

Both releases are different takes of the track, but can anyone remind me which version was released in the UK?

This first came out on Carmie, then this release and finally HBR, but again, all are different takes. I don't have the HBR release, but thought that this might be of interest anyway?

currently have the earl gaines hbr lp with the definitive version, played at the casino by john vincent...also had the deluxe 7" a few years back which was a slower version

Robb, I saw that Thomas Kemp was mentioned as lead vocalist with the Oncore Four-Gents. It's strange that there is not a lot of info on Thomas who as you know was quite heavily involved with Motown, Spinners, Isley's etc.

Not sure John played this at the casino  . I know Rob Smith from Notts had been playing it since 77  though John may have picked up on it after hearing it in robs shop when we found it :-):-)
