I present an Internet Northern Soul show and I'm thinking of doing a Mr M's special for the whole two hours of my slot,

Any suggestions for an all time Mr. M's playlist ??

Thanks in advance.

Update on some of the tracks suggested

Gene Chandler - Nothing Can Stop Me

Otis Blackwell - It's All Over Me

August & Deneen - We Go Together

Ronnie & Robyn - As Long As You Love Me

Mitch Ryder - Breakout

Vel-Vets - I've Got To Find Me Somebody

Ann Perry - That's The Way He Is (instr)

Vibrations - Cause You're Mine

Mr.Floods Party - Compared To What

The Velours - I'm Gonna Change

Don Thomas - Come On Train

Saxie Russell - Psychedelic Soul

Ace Cannon - Sea Cruise

Nolan Chance - Just Like The Weather

Gene Chandler - I Can Take Care Of Myself

Gwen & Ray - Build Your House On A Strong Foundation

Reggie Garner - Hotline

Younghearts - Togetherness

The Monitors - Save A Little Love

Going to stop this now,The oldies played in Mr.M's depended on when you started going to the Casino,And of course,What you classed as an oldie at the time,If you went in 79 - 80 for example, your views on Mr.M's tunes would be different I suppose to someone who stopped going in 76-77,

Many thank's to everyone who posted,

Same for me too.................couldn't wait to get out of the main hall.....................used to get in the queue early so we could get the table on the back wall upstairs!! :D

One that sticks in my mind late 76 early 77 was " barbecue "

Quite a silly tune really) was it a commercial for an American food chain?)

But it had a thumping beat and at 3am in m's it used to pack the floor

Ps what is your radio station called???

Spike

HI It was specially made for the anual staff party at the bosses house, The story i read was prior to this record Wendy Rene was a local tv & radio jingle singer.

Top tune though, Never seems to go out of fasion.

Me too, wasnt a regular there but did go quite a lot of times over the ,Brian Rae putting on Rubin Youve been away,,back in bad boy days I just had been, for liberating pharmacueticals from white metal cabinets.Great record, great times great buzzes.

Rarely ventured in there up to 78, too smoky and poky for my liking and always preferred what was on offer in the main room up to that point. Around 79-80, coinciding perhaps with Larry Houston/Top Cat and the like, I began to venture in there a lot more. Remember us all sitting on the counter of that bar at the back and talking bloody nonsense and the next thing you knew it was 6am. Stuff like Dottie Cambridge ' Cry Your Eyes Out', Moses Smith 'The Girl Across The Street', Marsha Gee 'Baby I Need You', Del Larks 'Job Opening' and Bob & Earl 'My Little Girl' come to mind.

Remember watching guys doin their acrobatic dancing if I remember correctly when you went in from the main hall from upstairs they were on your right as you went in ,on a tiny bit of dance floor especially to younghearts Eddie Parker etc

country roads high voltage used to hit the spot for me hearing it there. rather than in the big room

Loved M's and spent most of the night in there when the flasher and weak spot and stuff like that started setting in in the main room.

Always went in the gents at the back of the room to get changed, much less of an ordeal than the main toilets down stairs, not paranoid or anything, honest!!!!!

Favourite instrumentals that were regular tunes in M's were Davis & Tyler - hold on help is on the way and The Dynatones - the fife piper.

Bill Cosby - little ole man, Soul Sisters - good time tonight, James Carr - that's what I want to know, Rex Garvin - sock it to'em JB, Williams & Watson - a quitter never wins, O'Jays - looky looky, Fantastic Johnny C - don't depend on me.... also got regular plays in M's.

Think I only ever went in M's twice, and that was because I was trying to find someone! Only thing I can remember hearing on those 2 brief visits was Saxie Russell - Pyschadelic soul

Just picked up on this thread, the one record that makes me think of M's is Johnny Vannelli - 7 Days of loving you, not the bet record in the world, but everytime i hear it i think of that dirty sweat box with fond memories...

John

Last track played in there..Frankie Valli"the night"...quite apt that.

It got played at least three times on the bounce on the last night if I remember correctly, people ready to do a sit in.

4am in the morning, Mr M's packed solid and the first bars of

"A LITTLE BIT HURT"

JULIAN COVEY & THE MACHINE

the handclaps, the atmosphere, I'll never forget it!

I remember Kenny Spence once playing Muriel Day, by the end of it (i think he let it reach the end) there was about three people left on the floor, he took it off and snapped it in two whilst saying "just to make sure it doesn't get played again". A round of applause rang out! :D

Memory might of faded but James Lewis , chuck wood , the originals ,correct me if i am wrong

Babe Ruth - played by John Vincent ,but may have been in the main room

Babe Ruth - played by John Vincent ,but may have been in the main room

Only ever remember 'Elusive' from the main room, circa 76/7 onwards.

first record every session in the early days of mr ms wade in the water, ramsey lewis, always first on,played by mike rolo. big sound for gall, one way out, vandellas, the soul twins brought their rarities to the party with stuff stuff like bari track, and ronnie and robin, the monitors share a little love was always played, kenny spence i think, gloria jones come go with me,also a weekly spin, as was bar b q mentioned earlier. as far as i know theres no t.v footage of mr ms in full flow. at times , usually about half an hour or so after it opened, the vibe was absolutely electric, the dance floor packed solid and always the place for the hardcore soulies,( along with the record bar obviously) i,m sure most of you know all this anyway, but for me that unbelievable atmosphere and energy that the northern scene is famed for was at it absolute zenith in mr ms the first couple of hours it was open . finishers for ms charles mann its all over and lainie hill time marches on .

bob and earl band my little girl

now i come to think of it may have been life "cats eyes "

Big in the main room circa 77/8, but not really an 'M's' tune as such - you sure you're not thinking of the early M's sessions?, ie before the main room itself opened.

Didn't go in much as it was the oldies nighters we went to (geezer who ran the bus didn't like Saturday's back then Love Hustle/Joe 90 etc was his reason) but would have a look for half an hour or so, Joe Hicks Don't it make you feel funky always seemed to be on when you walked in!

I remember asking the muscly black lad with the blonde hair cut (Wayne Hackett from Leigh when I later was allocated old enough to be allowed to speak to him on a level  ) that used to dance to the left of the stage in M's what this instrumental was that I'd heard each time I had been in M's but had no idea what it was...... "'Scuse me mate but what's this?"

The reply.....

"A Ton Of Dynamite!!"

In fucking one!

I was sold on this life that I have since lived by, right then and right there.

I still miss the intensity of M's.

Anyone used to nick in the Casino round the back through M's btw (creep through M's with the lights on, through the double doors by the staircase and down into the Gents toilets and hide in the bogs)?

If you did you understood that the Casino was built on an incline.

We got in through the roof on more than one occasion (kid you not)

And we also hid in a "cupboard" after the early session until the nighter started!

Young, foolish and happy, eh. :D

We got in through the roof on more than one occasion

:lol::thumbsup:

Pigbag - Papas Got a Brand New PB everyone danced, well for one night only and there were only about 10 people in, it was near the end, I must have got lost and found myself there...... It was pretty dead by the time I started, for people doing something naughty (Barry obviously) or those who just wanted to stomp by that time I suspect.

Couple of my mates used to go up on the roof regularly for a cool down.

Know what you mean about knowing your place with the main men or "big time". I was the baby of our group as the lads I went with were all 3/4 years older than me, and I was stick thin and suffered from terminal acne.

Felt very intimidated first time I went to WC and too self conscious to get on the floor downstairs at first but I always felt more at home in M's right from the off.

Towards the end of my time there I was having big problems with paranoia and can remember on one occasion spending the whole night hiding in the bogs from some imaginary assailants! Didn't stop me going but it did stop me from being so greedy.

Always liked clocking the old school dancers in M's who were more footwork than summersaults.

Can understand some folks thinking it was all very tired musically but there was something cool about hearing those old familiar tunes in that environment.

Vel-Vets - I've Got To Find Me Somebody

Vibrations - Cause You're Mine

Mr.Floods Party - Compared To What

Nolan Chance - Just Like The Weather

Younghearts - Togetherness

A word of warning, don't stand too close the dance-floor edge otherwise you could get hurt in the stampede

Add "Heartaches away my boy" to that list.................
