Great posting pete ,90% 0n your listing number 1 {Not tailormades they are bad!} are infinately better than most of the Mega Raretys { their spelling!} £1000 + on Rare Northern Soul .com s weekly listings! LOL Johnny

From my own record buying the one that stands out is Ral Donner. I bought that  "blind" having never heard it before when it came out on Inferno, just because I'd bought the other first four releases. I still can't work it out. What exactly is it? It isn't a soul record. Is it an Elvis "movie period" record? How do you dance to it? Has anyone ever danced to it?

Also I think a worthy contender for top spot would be the Casino Classic release of Green Onions. which came out during the mod revival/Quadrophenia  era.  I think it was by the All-Night band and the label had words to the effect: "This song featured in the film Quadrophenia". It doesn't really get any more  cynical than that.

I've been looking at this post whilst I wait for my wife to get ready (to go shopping) so I've had loads of time to go through the lists. When I first saw them I thought that some of them e.g. John Drevars, Soul Jo Clements, Barry Benson were not that bad ( I remember when they were quite collectable) but god they are! but most of the others are worse than terrible.I I actually took the time to listen to as many of the ones I hadn't heard before and it just got worse. I don't think I've ever looked forward to a shopping trip as much as right now. I have to get these sounds out out of my head.

Would have liked to have seen Judith Durham Again & Again on the list - I'm sure that was played at the Casino.

Oi Mr Smith I still like the Jimmy Cliff and I admit to still having the Gary Lewis (somewhere) which sounds like a Bay City Rollers track!!!!

Surely Keanya Collins shouldn't be on that list ?!?  Always liked this, class 70's sound.

Not the worst and I actually really like it  'tears of joy ' it's just the start of the chorus, tune going along great then ken Dodd pops up. Teeeears of joy.  If I remember from his mag, it's one of pete smiths faves. Merry Christmas. Cheers

Was,nt there a version of the O,Jays Hold on by a band called the Soul Masters ?  . Not sure but I think Kev Roberts had a hand in it .

soul masters was released on us beach (silver label)

was due a destiny release but shelved along with instrumental of stronger than her love..

Not on British as far as I know so sorry if off topic but does anyone remember the female version of Ral Donner ?

Daughters Of Eve "Social Tragedy" (Chess) played for a few weeks by Richard S and then a Soul Bowl front page special.

A tad quick for these days methinks

Cheers Paul

love hustle - still sounds gr8 in right room

tears of joy - still amamzing

expressions - round in circles - still brilliant in a big room

I ve always liked Los Canarios and Keanya Collins but the rest are mostly dire particularly What Love Brings  Kenny Bernard sounds out of tune  was nt it reissued on Pye Disco Demand with Glad All Over - Leon Young Strings on the flip side  heard that at the Torch which just shows every venue played awful pop records at times

How can this be tailor made when NS was not even 'coined ' at release?

Better than most of the rock n roll and ska shite getting played these days.

a top tip

before going off on one best make sure you read both the topic title and first post

As in this 1990s article title is 'Worst UK Releases - Pete Smith'

opening statement

'1.. NORTHERN NIGHTMARES! THE WORST 50 BRITISH RELEASED RECORDS PLAYED ON THE NORTHERN SOUL SCENE'

👍

2. THE TAILOR-MADES HALL OF SHAME

Records manufactured to cash in on the Northern Soul scene. These records represent the lowest points in our wonderful scene's history.

JOHN SCHRODER - I'M GONNA CHANGE (ALASKA 1975)

SHARONETTES - PAPA OOH MOW MOW (BLACK MAGIC 1975)

RON GRAINER ORCH - JOE 90 THEME (CASINO CLASSICS 1978)

ALL NIGHT BAND - THE WIGAN JOKER (CASINO CLASSICS 1978)

ARMADA ORCHESTRA - COCHISE (CONTEMPO 1975)

SAX OF SOUL - SEA CRUISE (CRYSTAL 1975)

DESTINY ORCHESTRA - SPRING RAIN (DESTINY 1979)

CONNIE LAVERNE - A HOUSE FOR SALE (DESTINY 1979)

CAROL KAY - STOP AND YOU WILL BECOME AWARE (DESTINY 1979)

CHICO REVILL - THIS BEAUTIFUL DAY (DESTINY 1979)

JOHN DREVARS - THE CLOSER SHE GETS (DESTINY 1979)

Tailor made my arse. Just because it's listed here on a reissue label and NOT listed in section 1 does not make it tailor made.

You should read the facts before you judge.
