as theres no cecil washington to be found in the line up it cant be the same group who recorded for coconut groove especially as they were from Flint, Michigan and not NC or Kentucky ;)

The Soul Inc of "Teardrops" fame were from Virginia and called Soul Brothers Inc. The vocals on the Salem 45 are sung by the Carter Brothers.

The lead singer is Ron Trombley, also the drummer in the band. No connection whatsoever to Soul Inc. from the Carolinas pictured above.

Bill Tuthill was the writer and sing of IDLTL but wouldn't sign a contract to work in the studio, Cecil did and was given the song to over vocal also to sing live at a few local gigs.

He went on to produce quiet a few records on Prophonics and Coconut after that.

This is what I wrote about it back in October 2000 when reviewing it for Shades Of Soul fanzine:

I've collected Northern avidly for over twenty years now and believe me when I tell you that to me this is one of the finest examples of that genre that I've ever come across. Immaculate instrumentation, great vocal performances and a wonderful lyric in fact it ran a close second to Chuck Jackson's "Hand it over" as the record that my wife was to walk down the aisle to! For the anoraks among us (and let's face it if you've bought this fanzine you might just well be one), I have to point out that it has the "Mastered at Frankford & Wayne" and the "ARP" stamps in the run out grooves! The label address/credits/layout/numbering system run hand in hand with the "Prophonics" label out of Mt.Morris, Michigan thus its from the same stable as Searling's old Wigan monster, "Joe Matthews - I don't like to lose", which of course is really "The Group featuring Cecil Washington". Indeed, Cecil is present again on this disc not only as the second vocal to enter the song (duetting with an unknown male vocal), but he also wrote and co-produced it as well, the talented so and so.

Recent research tracked down Soul Inc.'s old manager, who credited the lead voice as "Bobby someone or other"Â - time will hopefully reveal his identity. So, what's it like tight drumming and stroking guitar work are complemented by an organ breathing away, as it builds and just gets better and better. "Sit yourself down dear, I've got something to say. Girl we have been living right, things have been going right and started to go our way. We've got blessings to be counted girl, true love has been founded on a solid foundation (enter Cecil) with every indication that it will last as years go pass, temptations may mount, but I will never cheat on you, no I won't." FANTASTIC, but it gets even better, "Now that we know for sure, that our love will always endure, now that you have fulfilled my life, I'm asking you to be my wife. This is my proposal". Let us hope that he gets what he wants and that she'd accept his declaration of undying love. For us punters who still like to throw ourselves around the dance floor it has a perfect Northern instrumental break and a couple of crucial key change chucked in for good measure as well.

Sure Cecil said elsewhere on here that when The Group laid the track down the vocal just wasn't good enough. Cecil then laid his vocal down and that is what they went with hence the "Featuring Cecil Washington."

Lynn & The Invaders is almost the same backing but with a beach bongo style song on prophonics.

Far more than seven copies of this knocking about. The information about Ron Trombley being the drummer and vocalist in the band is taken from a youtube clip and is apparently from Ron's son. Mr Trombley is still about and still heavily involved with music in Flint (primarily country these days). It shouldn't be beyond the collective wit of the scene to get in touch with him and get some concrete answers surely?

I can hear him Marc, but you wouldn't know from Adam who it was if Cecil hadn't said he comes in there.

You said as there is no Cecil in the photograph it can''t be them (referring to the Soul, Inc photo), I'm saying you won't find a photo of them with him in as he wasn't part of the group, he simply helped with harmony whilst arranging the record in the studio as have many arrangers and producers before him. Doesn't make it a Cecil Washington record, that does the group a disservice, IMO of course....of to listen to something decent to get this out of my head now.

Agree with you, Gareth...defo in double figures and may be pointless trying to name who has it as a few have gone through eBay and disappeared into collections unknown.

I also recall being told at the time that the manager was tracked down, that the label owenrs fell behind with the rent on their offices, so loads of stock was simply ditched (Coconut Groove, Prophonics, Washington Square), so only the copies sent to local DJs, giveaways to family and friends and a tiny bit of stock given to stores are in circulation.

I still have mine and love it as much as the first time I heard it...it is a superb production, arrangement and all-round performance. Each to their own though.

I hear you Pete & whilst the records you have quoted are fantastic in thier own right, you can hear em any where at any time, whilst I may have been over exuberent with my comment, I'd hope that you would get my drift kinda....

Its a good Northern Soul record that I have never tired of, mainly cos it isnt thrashed to death.
