Live In Concert

I have noticed a slight rise in concerts with artists fromm "the good old times". or am i wrong? which artists would you like to see again live on stage. i would love to see angie stone in concert, or isaac hayes or even leroy hutson.... let me know, who you have see and how it was, or who you would like to see....bless mirja

Personally I'd love to see Al Green. Saw him around 1972 when he was at his very best, then again in the early 90's when he did a gospel set; awesome.

I've heard he's now singing some of the old hits again, so he'd be top of my list. Well, I'll never get to see Otis or Jackie....

Jackie Wilson, saw him twice in the 70's and never really appreciated at the time what a performer this guy was, as I was a WHO WHO man at the time, and didn't appreciate his vast array of material, mores the pity as the chance has now long gone.

Betty Wright love to see her live again. :shades:

No, wasn't tongue in cheek at all, I would pay any money to see the original line up of Slade again. The only other live band I'd even contemplate going to see is The Prodigy :D

I would love to see one of the greatest soul singers live.....Jerry Butler...and he sings "walking around in teardrops"....Also.Betty Lavette,wish i had seen her at Blackpool a few years ago..

Best live act for me was Gene Chandler..Morecambe Pier :( ..By that i mean best soul act...

I saw Earth Wind and Fire and came out wishing I had been born a few years earlier so I could have seen Parliament-Funkadelic

Sadly, I've only seen Edwin Starr, alongisde Martha Reeves and Mary Wilson as a Motown Tribute show.

And even more sad is that I'll never see the now late Edwin Starr again - he was breathtaking. He was unbelievable, just made the hairs on your neck stand up.

Saw the Stax Volt tour with Otis at Hammersmith Odeon - wot a nite!

Glad someone remembered Chuck Jackson at Yarmouth silver suit and all! He was brilliant, and while we're at Yarmouth who saw the Four Tops when they played there (1980?), full orchestra, the works.

'mazing small world - only went a few times - didn't see tempts. Saw Gladys Knight & Pips, and George Benson. Would have been after 72 but can't remember when.

Remember also booking for Marvin Gaye, not at Odeon but somewhere in B'ham. Never went tho' can't remember what happened or even if the gig took place.........too many years!

ONE ARTIST I WOULD LOVE TO SEE LIVE! IS PATTI AUSTEN...WILL NEVER FORGET THE P.A BY RONNIE MCNIER @ PARKERS IN THE EARLY NINETIES! THE HIGHLIGHT OF A GREAT SHOW WAS WHEN RONNIE ASKED THE CROWD FOR REQUESTS! OF COURSE " SITTING IN MY CLASS" RANG OUT! AND THE MUSIC STARTED BUT RONNIE STRUGGLED TO REMEMBER THE WORDS SO ASKED THE CROWD TO HELP! AT WHICH POINT EVERYONE STARTED TO SING! HALF WAY THRU THE SONG YOU COULD SEE RONNIE OVERCOME WITH EMOTION TEARS RUNNING DOWN HIS CHEEKS! TRULY ONE OF THE OUTSTANDING NITES TO BE HELD @ PARKERS.

Without question Mud....original line up of course sadly legendary front man Les Grey is no longer with us, so even if Rob Davis, Dave Mount and Ray Styles reformed it would not be the same, saw them in around 1973/4 at The Lewisham ABC Cinama...what a night that was, Tiger Feet, Dynamite etc. ... well it was simply Dynamite to watch.

On a more serious note rather than my 'Mud' comments...lol i think the best two live shows i've seen have to be both on their home turf in a couple of small Blues clubs in Chicago were Jimmy Burns and Otis Clay, must have been about 100 people at the Otis Gig and a few more at Jimmy's show, not on the same night i might add.

Saw Marvin Gaye at the old Bingley Hall in Brum around '76. Not good.

Chuck Jackson without a doubt,seen him at Gt Yarmouth.Played every northern track you can think of.

Closely followed by Jr Walker at the Playhouse Theatre in Edinburgh about 15 years back,He walked on stage with no backing band,walked straight up to the mic.Saxaphone in hand and ordered the words " "JUNIORS BAD,cause I`m a road runner " It`ll stay with me till I drop and there were only about 40 of us in the audience.AWESOME!!!!!

I would love to see Eddie Holman again, When he appeared at Lowton it was by far the best live act i had ever seen. What a shame that there were only 300 souls in the place. All i can say is the other tight fisted so n so,s missed the ultimate performance by a truly wonderful genuine, warm person. Thank you Eddie.

Yes I saw Curtis Mayfield @ Dingwalls he was very very good & in a small club like that.... it was just before they knocked Dingwalls down & rebuilt it....I saw Jackie Wilson @ Wigan 14th June 1975, sadly he wasn't on top form & think it was one of the last performances he did before he slipped away....

Some of these posts bring back many happy memories. Curtis Mayfield at Dingwalls, particularly. It was awe-inspiring to be in the same small room as a legend. Ditto when Sam Dees played there (although seeing SD live was always quite problematic for me, as I always got the impression he detested performing live). Saw Al Green at Hammersmith Odeon in the early to mid 90s, and he was everything you could expect him to be, a wonderful vocal talent and a master showman with tons of natural charisma. Anita Baker, too, at the same venue on her first visit to Britain in the 80s was a phenomenally intense performer, far, far removed from her coffee-table incarnation of later years. I can still hear her earth-shattering rendition of You Got To Feel The Need In Me which genuinely thrilled and moved.

Mark Bicknell mentions Otis Clay and I must state that he is pretty much the last of a dying breed, a straight down the line, all action, no-frills, blue-collar, real soul man, and an absolutely dynamite vocalist with a fantastic grasp of the dynamics of live performance. Seeing him you really could be transported to his roots in the hell-fire gospel tradition. Quite simply, he's awesome and I would urge anyone who can to see him while you still have the chance. Andy Dyson made the point here a few months ago that many of the soul greats are now operating on half-power due to advancing years, but went on to say this is not the case with OC. How true that is.

Absolutely and similarly I saw Gene Chandler at Dingwalls can't remember the date but it was refreshing to see hime in a small intimate place where you could actually see and feel him sing - as opposed to a raucous soul clapping kind of gig. (Not knocking the latter each has its place)

for the soul act it would have to be the temptations at manchester free trade hall mid 70's it was awesome my friend worked on the door so got in for nothing the did two shows a mattinee and an evening show how many groups would do that now.

I would love to see Prince Phillip Mitchell again but on a bigger stage next time, also would love to see Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin, very much doubt if they will ever come to the UK though.

Saw the Tempts at the Free Trade Hall in 72. Was it the same tour? In the era of 69 to 72 I saw the following, all in Manchester!

i also went to the odeon to see billy paul,ojays and intruders.the ojays and intruders were truly brilliant,but it was billy pauls birthday,allegedly,and he was absolutely hammered or chemically enhanced or just very very confused.cant remember the year.

We went to see Al Green in Manchester last year and he was good but only did an hour .. I know he's old etc etc but expected a bit more than that for my £30!! Didn't do half the stuff I was hoping he would either - nothing off his new album at the time either :shhh:

I would love to see David Bowie again ... saw him in 1985 at Maine Road (ex Man City ground), he was absolutely superb .. boiling hot day, plenty of coider and a great crowd ... have dreams about him in that yellow suit.

Also the Jam .. saw them in '85 too at Bingley Hall, Stafford ... fabbie!!

Never saw Madness unfortunately but would have liked to have been there at that time all the two-tone suits etc .. dead smart :shhh:

I was always a little behind the times Dan, must have been earlier then ... don't forget I was only young at the time :shhh: I have just checked with my sister who I went with and she seems to think it was 81 or 82 (my I was very young then!!!)

And I've never seen the Style Council so it couldn't have been them ... oh and by the way ... I do know the difference between the two bands !!

I saw Al Green live in Connecticut a couple years ago, and he puts on an absolutely stunning show.

All the old material is back, his voice is in stellar shape and even the little bit of new material he did was great.

They needed casino security to keep the women at the front (all in their 50s and 60s I might add) from crawling on the stage...they all wanted a piece of Reverend Al :thumbsup: I would go to see him again at any opportunity.

hi brian yes probably was 1972 i was 15 think it was the first concert i ever went to and just like the venue it was free entrance for me and mybest mate. mark
