 Don,t mean that........just look at the places that rock....Nuneaton (oldies)....Stoke (oldies) boomerang (crossover and modern) empty bottles (uptempo &r&b) black bee (same)....there ya go all have their own policy....which ain,t across the board.

Raym, I have just checked out your link and it derserves a more in depth viewing so I will do just that, good to see Peterborough alive and jumping, I know what you mean and a lot of people will  agree with you about the played out oldies, there is so much music out there that needs to be played, fresh tunes keeps the clubs new and the people dancing and enjoying their time out, which is what its all about (so is the hokey kokey thats what its all about) but you know mean, I said that quote before anyone else could, enjoy,Keep On.

Back to the original posters post....what he was describing to me was crossover......so heres the rub.....l can name on one hand the places that rock,either from experience of from the chat from my oop north friends (not many lol)....wether they play from 60's through to modern,wether they shut at 2,3,4,6 or 8...they have a specific music policy.....l can also name on one hand all the places that are dreary,die early excetera, excetera.....and they all have a cross the board policy....with one exception....which is probably the social aspect ....which is fine

Hi Soulcool (Kim is it?). One downside to this thread (and has always been the case)

is that there are sometimes "too many" venues on at the same time, thus creating

frustration for promoters & punters alike, as Dave P says the Horse & Groom is a

good alternative... Sunday afternoons.

LilJimmyCrank/Gordon Russell, take it easy easy now its all about having fun, I have to agree with LilJimmyCrank though sorry Gordon, I have been to venues where they use a mix of styles, Just been to Indigo (inner city soul club) in Manchester, soul sam was there, but the guy's Gumbo and David (check out their sound file) play quality tunes, some DJ's can mix and flow with the records they play, Dave and Gumbo ( I give these fellas serious shout out) need a new word creating for what they do, and you heard it here first, they not only mix they "blend" they fused the different music styles together and it worked, damn right it did, maybe if more clubs did a "blend" then the people would be able to enjoy more than just one music style at a time, Keep On/

Chalky, Your right a variety keeps a club fresh and alive with Soul, I have just found a gem of a place in Manchester, Indigo (Inner city soul club) check out their sound file at Events, Dave and Gumbo these two guys have a talent to "blend" music styles, second time I've been to Indigo now and I will not be missing  another, soul sam was there, its a real soul club in my humble opinion, Keep On.

Music policy has stayed the same (in a good way). I remember you asking, in reference to Steve plumb guest djing at the time, and I think Ted Massey might have been on that night too. We advertise, amongst other genres, "rare and underplayed 60's and 70's" which Steve plays.

All guest DJ's are allowed to play with the shackles off within what we advertise.

Atmosphere, energy and numbers rarely fail so I'd say it works, yes.

2 rooms can give a mix of sounds.. The mix you talk about in the opening post does work ok in bars with DJs, that's been going on for all my years in Manchester... If that's your bag mate, all mixed into one room then most posts on here will not give you what you ask for..

heres a point most dj's collect tunes of the genre they like.....so it follows they'll play them when out......so if for instance ya like 70's when you go out and only one of the dj,s plays 70's   then it must follow that for the rest of the night you,ll here a genre you don,t....so 5 or 6 hours of stuff you don,t like......better to go to a club where all the dj,s play what ya like surely!.....remember you can like many forms of soul in your own home,but a lot are not for playing at venues thats why cross the board venues become boring and dreary..at some point in the night.......thats probably why folk drift off after say 3 a.m

And the whole point of the post was were can i find a place like Prestwhich, a 2 room venue , where i can here 60s Northern to modern.... Quite a simple post really.... Any places that can provide this mix should let the guy know, all others should butt out....

 

We all know what your thoughts are Terry, you have told us a million times, you have blinkers and do not like 70s or modern, this thread is not for you... And we are talking soul clubs here, not all niters, so your boring dreary yawn yawn yawn time of the night in the wee hours as no bearing.... You stick to what you like and leave others to search their soul... Plenty of choice out there...

 

As i said above, whats the point in posting details of clubs that can't provide the mix he requires, its just hot air...

im an ex pat, as are most who come to the FLY, its not really about me....but been on the scene since  first visit to the casino in 76. my friend from carlisle, Danny Spiers and i dj there in 79/80 and also at the carlisle alniters too,  a bit of a sore point with some over here.pmsl. 

       Been collecting since 72 so got a few and quite eclectic as you can imagine and really into the history of it all and serial numbers..i met up with a lot of the guys at chicago soul tour  like dave greet, dave raistick, dave rivers and dave mc cuban, and was beginning to think that there must have been a prophet called dave when yet another two, dave whittle and dave moore showed up. I wrote a "motown pinks" article for daves incredible  THERES THAT BEAT number 3. I know the likes of roger banks, horse (steve watson) pete coulson, joe corrance, sam moore, ginger, brian rae, feels like ive known him forever, kenny burrell, johnny manship, george hunt, dj at Lowton, bretby etc, So been around the traps. 

       We also have among our patrons john manships old soulsearching colleague andy cox who used to join john on his hunting trips and his stories are great. The FLY is a tremendous venue for live bands holding around 600 as a max. we average around 160 at our events, they are  ran every 6 weeks or so and we had almost 400 at our anniversary last year. it looks like an old nissan hut but huge like an old aircraft hanger with some bohemian style decorations such as a giant hand made from paper mache hanging from the ceiling. a great freindly atmosphere and the management, John and Sarah are INCREDIBLY helpfull and help us with ideas and promotions of events.

      Its not cheap to run, do some simple math, we pay for the venue, but we  just turn up with our decks and mixer and plug it in. we get a sound engineer, a lighting engineer, 3 or 4 bar staff a doorman (who has the easiest job on the planet) and an admissions clerk and a great crew they are.... then we pack way and come home. believe me anyone who runs events will know its not quite that simple.

      The guys who spin at my events, tim, ronnie, nige or dave and marilyn really know the fly and what works, reacting accordingly, indeed some have been doing it here for almost 40 years,  and do a great job. i have one guest per event and they do 2 half hour slots around 9.30 and 11.00 with me doing the early ones.the spinners partners get in free too. they use the best equipment, twin technics 1200 decks, technics mixer and headphones and also a choice of ortofon or sure needles, no amatuer night here at the TIME TUNNEL. Our crowd is mainly middle of the road soul fans  and we dont go out to educate them, we want to give people a great night out. but as you will see from some of the play list below it is a heck of a mix. we also do a 70/80 disco night which has so far been well attended. the biggest thing is they want to dance  not sit down

Our sister Sunday chillout at the Church House follows the same ethos, very similar to the Horse and Groom and, to a fair extent,  frequented by the same crowd. I'm not going to post the link on here as the thing we do will alienate 90% of forum users but we've just run a room over a weekend (two days, three nights) where the DJs played soul, funk, jazz, Latin, hip hop, house, roots, rocksteady, jump blues, library and a smattering of African, Cuban and international sounds. We also included a four hour Northern/Modern/Crossover session, where some beat ballads were played.

 

In terms of the original poster's criteria I would say this is closest to the mark. It probably won't come as a surprise however, to hear that, with a few exceptions (including the soul club's promoter who's a great bloke) the local soul crowd stuck mostly to 'their' session whereas our (non-scene) regulars got stuck into everything else. That's completely cool and it was great to be able to include something for the local scene members, but it seems to suggest that OP is very much in the minority in wanting to hear that kind of variety in the same venue.

Also, I tried to stress that I was referring to the original brief, which was venues that didn't just play soul but also funk, jazz, hip hop etc. Those library records are funky tunes, played by jazz musicians and frequently sampled by hip hop producers. I'm not for a moment suggesting they're soul records, or that they should be accepted by the Northern fraternity and I completely understand that they don't float you boat  - but you can't deny that they fit the bill regarding what the topic starter said he was looking for
