If some one asked me this ,and I could only play one tune,it would have to be

Valentinos - Sweater Than The Day Before

always thought of it as a pure solid Northern tune

what single tune would you use to try and explain it

For me it would be "Cause your mine" Vibrations..

I have to go with Yvonne Baker " You Didn't Say A Word " : For me , the tune that sums up the genre .

Yep I agree ,you do mean the instrumental, and not the vocal version, was it Bob Relf who did the vocals....should have left it alone, the instrumental was pure Northern

DEFFO THE INSTRUMENTAL.

BAZ A

I always tend to go for Don Varner -- Tear stained face,

Has every thing in a record strong, powerful, emotional male lead vocals, girl backing and an absolute pounder, being in mono absolutely makes the record what it is his vocals coming out of one speaker and horns ect pounding out the other

Probably 'walk in my shoes', or 'tell me it's just a rumour' just to emphasise the connections between northern and the motown sound. Plus both of them are brill

I normally say Sandi Sheldon - You're gonna make me want you.

Tell me its a rumour is a cracking choice tho Win.

Down in the tube stations at midnight, the jam

100% Russ....it's got everything....but can't leave these behind - Yvonne Baker - You didn't say a word/ Linda Jones - Just can't live my life/ Superlatives - I still love you.....that's Northern Soul distilled down into 4 droplets of perfection.... Jo

two from our house

Bobby Paris I Walked Away

MVP s Turning my Heartbeat Up

Salvadors - Stick By Me Baby..............................da da daaaaaaaaaa omphhhhhhhhhhh !!!!

Russ

You know Russ, when I first started liking Northern Soul, I just couldnt get this record at all. It was and is one of my brothers faves, but it just left me cold. Then Ady played it at the 100 club 2 months ago, and it made the hairs stand up on my neck. It was THE perfect record for that time of night, about 7.45am. The last blast before back to reality. It only took what, 28 years, and I finally enjoyed it as much as the rest.

Just been trying to think of a more recent discovery that could be mentioned along with these great oldies.

I absolutely love Margaret little, and that would just about be the best IMO.

Joey DeLorenzo has all the 'oddities' of a Northern Soul record. Sung by a white bloke, and is not particularly soulful, but is in my mind 100% Northern Soul. And finally Tobie Bowe for anyone who wants to present a real soulful tune.

Dance Dance Dance - The Casualeers

(See 'Cutting My Ears Off' thread)....careful Richard...Steve Cato might Leave Leave Leave....I know Mr Rimmer is partial to this track tho  Jo

ah but Jo it wasn't fav track it was one that defines Northern Soul - how could you describe it better to someone who doesnt have a clue than Dance Dance Dance

But with those two I can hear peoples ear cutting knives sharpening as I type

The first time I heard "DO I LOVE YOU" - FRANK WILSON There was no turning back.

It's 4 O'clock Sunday morning at a packed allnighter......Soul Brother Six "Pyramid"

"There's That Beat, And I Must Dance,

Now There's That Rhythm That Puts Me In A Trance,

Well, That Beat And That Rhythm Just Keeps Movin' Up,

It's Too Hot For Me To Slow Down,

And My Feet Are Filled With Happiness

And I'm Determined to Dance Around"...

...It was, it is and it always will be the absolute definition of Northern Soul. Even if I haven't got every single word right, every line of that verse speaks directly to the scene.

Let's hear it, one more time, for the unbeatable Mr. Richard 'Jimmyconwell' Temple and his 'Beatin' Rhythm'...

TONE

well either mel britt or herbert hunter both pure quality

russ

I Don't Like To Lose--Cecil Washington, I remember hearing it for the first time at the Casino, just as i got thru the double doors and just stood there rooted to the spot, only to be shouted from behind" get out the fcuking way" by a sweet talking male soulie, ahh good days!!!!!Del x

As mentioned previously Herbert Hunter is a definate contender, failing that one of these two.

Billy Butler - The Right Track or Frank Beverly & The Butlers - If That's What You Wanted

For me the first record I heard at my local youth club which made stop and think hey this isn't chart music but this is brilliant dance music which went onto to be one of my all time favourites and to to me defines Northern Soul is:-

J.J.Barnes - Please let me in - Ric Tic.

Regards

Alan

Great tune...but its got a touch of the R&Bs to me

Bazza

Bazza, your having a laugh right????lol should be Sir George Blackwell or perhaps King George....lol

Good thread this..........the likes of Sam Williams, Morris Chestnut, Four Perfections, Luther Ingram, Duke Browner, Leon Heywood, Earl Jackson, Ronnie McNeir for me have to be in this mix...and dozens more.
