What Tune Defines Northern Soul?

Bazza

Ok it's not northern....but just listened to Spooners Crowd - two in the Morning.

It captures the atmosphere so well...walking down the street in the dead of night....hearing the first muffled tones of the music we love as we near the venue....then opening the door and letting your senses fill with whats inside.

Thats how I'll always remember Blackburn...rounding the corner and hearing the music cascading down the street

:wicked: for me , it has to be shawn Robinson, my dear heart.. I still love it to bits, and just love dancing to it, it sends cold shivers down my spine, thats one sound that has everything going for it, in fact, I always wanted to blow the trumpets with the orchestration. :shades:

For me the first record I heard at my local youth club which made stop and think hey this isn't chart music but this is brilliant dance music which went onto to be one of my all time favourites and to to me defines Northern Soul is:-

J.J.Barnes - Please let me in - Ric Tic.

Alan

THE tune that defines northern soul for me is Man o Man, Little Walter - what a fab intro - watch the dancers run to the floor - gets me every time!

Took years to track it down after first hearing it as a cover up, bought every 45 going with similar words in the title (what could I do? What should I do? etc etc etc) and finally got a copy at Prestatyn a few years a go (no not an original!). I love it and treasure it!

I would have to agree with you there..... thumbsup.gif

The drum and snare drumbeat intro

"baaaaah bah bah bah bah bah bah ba"

......anyone know what the hell I'm on about... rolleyes.gif

I'm STILL getting an original.............ONE DAY.... wink.gif

Late addition but not previously mentioned (I think) Steinways "You've been leading me on". Rousing drum and piano intro, thumping drum beat throughout, great vocals, neat breaks - everything in my opinion that defines Northern Soul

Picture this its January 1974, me and Bob Foster are back at his place after a monday night out. He says to me.............I've just had a tape from Martin Kopell, listen to this track & on comes:-

Let Nobody love you - Virginia Blakly - Mojo.

After the first few Do Do Do Do's she starts..........Baby I've got to leave you for a day or two........... by then I was totally blown away & to this day its still my favourite track of all time. There's a few that can mach it now, but not beat it. West Coast Northern Soul at its best.

Baz, each to his own mate, the diversity/difference of opinions etc is part of the intrigue of the scene, don't you think?

I could have listed any one of dozens of tracks as could everybody else but this track is as near to defining NS as any other. Epitome of Sound would be a very, very close second, however.

Bunny Sigler - Follow your heart played it saturday night after a 10 year break

One of those you just have to sing along to at full volume.

With my voice passable in a loud club. Not great in a convertable rolleyes.gif

ITS EASIER TO PICK A RECORD THAT DEFINES NORTHERN SOUL THAN IT IS TO DEFINE NORTHERN SOUL IN WORDS.

FIRST OF ALL IT CANNOT BE A SOUL RECORD, SLOW, MID, OR UP TEMPO. THIS IS BECAUSE ITS A SOUL RECORD AND ACCEPTABLE AS THAT.

THAT RULES OUT MOST OF THE PREVIOUS CHOICES.

IT WOULD HAVE TO BE SOMETHING NOT ACCEPTED BY SOUL LOVERS/PURISTS, BUT SIMILAR SOUNDING, SO AS TO TICK MOST OF THE BOXES THAT DEFINES A SOUL RECORD.

THIS MUST HAVE BEEN THE THINKING BEHIND THE DJ'S WHO PLAYED 'CLASSICS' LIKE 'YOUR READY NOW', 'RUN BABY RUN', 'TEN MILES HIGH' ETC ETC. SOME OF THESE TYPES OF TUNES ARE VERY CLOSE TO SOUL RECORDS FOR EXAMPLE HERBERT HUNTERS 'I WAS BORN TO LOVE YOU' AND SOME ARE MILES WIDE OF THE MARK, LIKE THE CROW'S YOUR AUTUMN OF TOMORROW.

DONT GET ME WRONG I AM NOT SAYING ANY OF THESE TUNES ARE BAD, BUT THAT TO BE SPECIFICALLY POSTED AS NORTHERN SOUL, IT MUST BE DIFFERENT TO SOUL.

NORTHERN SOUL IS ALSO DIFFERENT TO RARE SOUL, AND BACK IN THE 70'S LOTS OF DJ'S AND PUNTERS DID NOT LIKE THE TAG OF NORTHERN SOUL, AS IT INCLUDES NON SOUL RECORDS. THATS WHY TERMS LIKE RARE, OR MODERN, WERE ADDED TO THE 'SOUL' TERM.

OF COURSE ITS ONLY MY OPINION, BUT IS BASED ON WHY THE SOUL SCENE SPLIT INTO VARIOUS GROUPS, LEAVING THE 'POPSOUL' OR 'NORTHERN SOUL' ELEMENT TO FADE.

TODAY EVERYTHING IS 'ACROSS THE BOARD' FROM EARLY 60S CLASSIC SOUL LIKE THE TAMS, TO UP TO DATE RELEASES, AND OVERALL ITS A GOOD THING AND ENABLES BIGGER CROWDS.

A SUGGESTION FOR A DEFINITIVE PURE NORTHERN SOUL RECORD WOULD BE AFTERNOON OF THE RHINO - MIKE POST. TICKS ALL THE BOXES EXCEPT SOUL.

I have to go with
Yvonne Baker " You Didn't Say A Word "
: For me , the tune that sums up the genre .

Malc Burton

Malc, you took the track right out of my play box
Ab-so-bleedin'-lutely.....it's got everything - big hair, slingbacks, chiffon, drama, divatude...and a James Bond flavour...makes me swoon every time even now
:)
Close second is Kim Weston's 'I'm still loving you'.....

HB Barnum - Heartbreaker

Gerri Granger - I go to pieces

Jackie Wilson - Because of you

Alfie Davidson - Love is a serious Business... all great great tracks!

Valentinos - Sweater Than The Day Before

always thought of it as a pure solid Northern tune

what single tune would you use to try and explain it

Bazza
