I was too young to attend some of the major clubs in the 70's and so I'm fascinated in knowing what was played and where.

Ive seen lots of playlists for most of the major clubs like Wigan, Cleethorpes, Mecca and St Ives but can't remember seeing anything for Sheffield Samantha's.

I know that Samantha's played a mixture of oldies and 70's sounds but can anyone on here shed any light to the kind of tunes that were played?

I went 3 or 4 times in 75 with Drew from Bury and Jimmy Belcher from Bacup. I got the bus to Drews house, train to Manchester, train to  Sheffield and into the pub. Fell out with the disco crew as they left the early session and up the stairs we went for a great night. Same journey home in the morning, and all I can remember  from the 3 nights is hearing Al Kent The Way You Been Acting Lately!

That wasn't very helpful was it!

don't think there was anything played that you could call a typical sammy`s sound, in the main room it was current sounds from Wigan Cleethorpes and the mecca, there was also an oldies room  

To be honest I don't think there was much difference between Sam's playlists and those from the late Torch/Early Wigan days. As opposed to Va Va's, Mecca and Cleethorpes Pier from around the same time, that really did change the vibe.

Thanks everyone, that's maybe why I've never seen a dedicated list. Seems like Samantha's captured all of the current sounds.

With John and Frank djing? Really? That's not my recollection from 73 onwards. Much of the same stuff played at Cleethorpes and the Mecca plus JVs eclectic playlist made for many a great night. Certainly wasn't all early Wigan sounds.

JV had a few different things that he also played fortnightly at Wigan but that's pretty much how I remember it. 

I went between 76 and its closure, always frequented the main room the tunes that stood out for me at the time and were the real floor fillers, ..... Anderson brothers - I can see him making love to you baby

As said earlier, most of the ones I remember were popular at all the main venues at the time , can't remember anything that was really unique to sammies tbh

That's really what I was trying to say, the majority of sounds were being broken elsewhere and Sam's just kept pace. I'm not knocking the place, I had some great nights there.

Hi Steve. Not sure what you mean.It was definitely played then. It really grabbed my attention, as it was only the second time I had ever heard it. 

The first time I heard it was at Burnley Rose Rooms Tuesday night Rare Soul nights in late 71 or early 72. I'm not sure who played it, but the DJS were Tony Jebb and Ian Levine when Tony let him have the odd half hour spot. I loved it on first hearing but never heard it again until that night.

Are you saying it wasn't played until later or was Samantha's in 76 onwards?

Lou Pride and the Pointer Sisters got their first ever plays at Samanthas. The Yum Yums was another key Sams sound - I think the only other person who had it was Pep back then. Also stuff like Frankie 'Loveman' Crocker, the Tomangoes, the Carstairs and the Detroit Executives were all played at Sams when there were only a handful of copies.

Hi Brian, 

I can't recall hearing it in the main room at that time. I had a quick look at the tape listings I have and it's not on any, but will have been played in the Hallam Suite. Obviously I didn't tape everything but can't recall it. There was a revival night once but I thought that was in 74. 

Still, it's a long time ago.....,

 

it it did get reactivated in South Yorkshire around 77/78 I think.

Those first three, Frankie Crocker and the Champion were all huge there.

I went a couple of times 76ish. Remember JV on both occassions playing Soul Yogi by Freddie McCoy. Went to Wigan and found it the record bar within 5 mins. Result.

Lou Pride was being played at the Mecca before August '73 'cos that's when I left for the Army. Sam's would have been later surely?

Sams was first believe me. It was covered-up as James Lewis and the Case Of Time. Bought the record off Bob in Louth on the Thursday night at a gig and then played it at Sam's the very next night. I remember it well as JV was drooling...

However, since they all came out of Soul Bowl anyway, most of the copies would have dripped out over the next few weeks I'm sure.........

Does it really matter which record was played first, when and where, surely the fact that they were played and we were and are privileged to hear such great music is the one thing we all agree on.Two of my favourite sounds were played there, in no order:- Johnny Sayles:- I can't get enough of your love and Earl Jackson:- Soul Self Satisfaction. Samantha's was an upstairs venue above the Silver Blades Ice Skating Rink in Queens Road, Sheffield. A room about three times as long as was wide, it had a relatively small dance floor, with a bar at the far end and ample seating. As you climbed the stairs and entered the room, the decks were on your left, readily accessable for requests. No stage to climb up onto! Unfortunately, the decks were so close to the dance floor that any enthusiastic "stomping" resulted in the record jumping... 'Elusive' by Babe Ruth often caused problems!

Some great sounds listed there Tezza.Love that Paramounts track which is getting a bit of a reactivation of late.Also from Martins list that crazy Raw SouI--The Gig remember seeing two guys doing 100mph shuffle to that one and never seen owt like it since.Never got to Sams before my time but heard lots of those records at the Clifton Hall and Cleggy Winter gardens events.I remember going to a Sams revival night in the early 90s when J.V came back and it was a belting night.I much prefere 60s playlists but there is deffo room to reactivate some of those great 70s tunes.

Thanks Peter, a long time ago now, you may be right about Larry Houston and it was definitely a hit at Clifton Hall but sure I remember Eddie Holman from Sam's. I'll check with JV.

I thought Eddie was a 1980 release but just checked and it's 1977. Larry Houston was Richards Top Cat cover up and a first at Wigan. What year did Samantha's finish? I never went - my all niter career began in 1979! My favourite all niter was Clifton Hall. I've been on your site a few times - I assume you're that Martin?

I  did 75 to 77 regularly at Sams and sure that I did the last one some time after.  Also did the mid week soul nights which I seem to remember were quite poorly attended. That would mean that Eddie was played at the latter end as a new release. 

All a bit vague now after all these years
