This came up on the clapping thread, for me a Div is anybody deemed to be not clued up on the scene, there's certainly plenty of evidence we have many without a clue, check the comedy sale of the day thread for instance. it seems to me to a large extent, at least in the mainstream areas of the scene the divs have well and truly arrived. The term plastic seems pretty appropriate as many seem to think you can buy an off the peg lifestyle from an online shop, that like the records many they play are pale imitations of the scene's underground heritage. please discuss and enjoy.

i turned up in the 80's to dance. i turn up now to dance .

don't know about other people but my reason to go to any soul nite is to dance, i tend to avoid CD nights but i really don't pay attention to some of the tools leaping around or bother about comedy mods, comedy soulies and empty nesters. i just get into the music. if you think back to the early 80's there were loads of non dancing drinkers at soul do's then. if 10 of us went to an all  niter. 5 drank all nite and five danced. they just didint stand out as much as some now. they were still hangers on to the soul scene.or they thought it was cool but didnt know anything about records. i learnt to be very tolerant at scooter rally nites, you get punks and skinheads and soulies all having a go at everything, on one dance floor on one nite. sometimes some of the best and most passionate dancers where those you'd never imagine.

Just a thought but won't some of these 'divs' be members on here ..I mean the ones with the baggie pants,badges and beer towels etc...+..surely at least one or two of them would or should spring to defend all that's being thrown at them (tables and chairs preferably )..only joking😊..but none have come on here in defence. ..also there is obviously more than one kind of 'div' on the soul scene...once worked with a guy who showed absolutely no interest in the scene in the late 90's , I'd be talking where I'd been at the weekend, records,new sounds with no feedback off him at all but to see him now Mr. Northern Soul  or fucking what😁😁...by the way he doesn't where baggies neither✊....

worse kind of 'div' is those that continue to drink on the dancefloor after being politely asked not to and explained why. If people want to wear what i regard as ridiculous outfits that doesn't bother me - each to his own etc..  However whenever I have asked someone 'why the baggy trousers' they usually say you need them to dance properly - my reply is go and watch some footage of Jackie Wilson or James Brown.

Agree each to their own etc nobody should tell anyone what they've got to wear on any scene...but I saw some folks changing into this gear in the bogs at a couple of venues years ago which put the kibosh on it for me as I knew what was coming with this dressage next. ..the shit pop stompers...sure enough they did...I go to a soul bash I rarely dance but I can honestly say I can thoroughly enjoy myself without dancing. .just soaking up a ballad even...it depends where you go i suppose..maybe I'm in a very small minority but I'd still be into soul music without a dance scene ..I get where the wide pants come from back in the day for dancing in and flares etc being 'in' fashion...but some of them must be terrible dancers if they dance better in bags coz I ain't seen too many great movers in 'em..one or two maybe. .

must admit had a clear out had ten records that were going in the bin put them on e bay got 200 quid for the 8 that sold divs must have bought them they do have their uses

  I think I may have been a 'div' It was early 1973 and was trying to get into Blackpool Mecca to visit the Highland Room. I was 15 years of age with  bumfluff on my chin. I was hiding in the queue behind other 'divs'. We were all trying to hide behind each other to be honest. I didnt get in. The bouncers spotted me a mile away. I must have gone about 10 times before I got in. Youve got to have been a 'div' once to progress in my opinion. Just saying

Just curious would U say the dancers of 2 days scene are better or worse than the dancers in say the 70s , when A great dancer is mentioned it seems from 30 years ago ! I think A floor full of people dancing , clapping in unison was awesome , but watching some old timer waiting for the break in young blood smith is A bit divvy if that is A word !

By rights the Divs should be better dancers because they have all had lessons. LOL

I wouldn't say they're better as there older...seen some of the younger ones doing the acrobatic stuff but even they don't seem to be as good dunno why really they just don't. ..maybe because the hip hop /break dancers took it to another level....but they don't spin Don they?.....totally agree with you on the clapping unison thing back in the day if you was on the balcony looking down it was something special. ..hey 'some'of the older guys can do it without looking to struggle do look good. ...I wouldn't get back up ....for a laugh I did a bit at my daughter's wedding last year. ..jesus christ😀😀

that`s because they`ve been "Taught" how to dance. It has to come from within, no one can teach you that part. Yes they`re pretty good dancers but if you really watch them there`s that something missing which has to be found inside, like the difference between black & white and colour.

Let me first start by saying that I NEVER went Wigan and in conversations with some ‘holier than thou people’ who, when speaking about soul and music in general  I always make this abundantly clear. As suddenly as if some excrement has descended from Valhala, I am made to feel like an “undesirable”, a yellow star has been sewn onto my Jacket’, I looked at my hand for a black spot. Yet when I mention some to of venue’s I went to, Three Coin Leeds, Chirasuro (sp) Wakefield, Tin Chicken, Sailsbury, Scarboro’ I’m left with blank stares.

But I might add I first fell in love with ‘Soul’ in the early sixties, and if you apply Steve Luigi mathematical logic you can guess my age, Sam and Dave, Otis, Wilson Pickett, Bob and Earl (Harlem Shuffle) Eddie F, at the start of the sixties was a time pre -Wigan which I was entirely devoted to. My falling out of love with the scene mid -seventies (Wigan period) coincided with me hooking up with my ‘Lady Soul’ and I never returned to the scene until of late. My return to Soul also was instrumental with my association with the Charity I’m totally devoted to, I’m not bothered about the so called ‘div’ on the soul scene: did youth of Wigan really wear flat caps, I ask myself, looking at some of the dancers on the floor at events I go to. After being ‘out in the wilderness’ for so long then re-finding my first love Soul from of the sixties, is something I can’t put down in words.

So yeah there are ‘divs’ on the scene, I suppose I may be one, but I don’t give a ‘rats arris’, I go to events and enjoy what’s being played by TOC, Tony and the boys  while I can.

I don't think "nest" is the correct collective noun for a gathering of divs.

You could argue that the whole Northern Soul scene isn't particularly productive.  Most of the records played were produced before the term was even invented.  Too many collectors chasing too few records.  Too many venues chasing too few punters.  Too many DJ's chasing too few gigs.  Plenty of tat being produced to fuel a specific market, along with a steady stream of bootlegs.

The thread has now descended into confusion. What started as a topic on Divvies that is to say outsiders, members of the public, locals, handbaggers etc has now taken a wrong turn to criticise so-called 'plastic soulies' who are actually part of the scene, regardless of age/dress/dance style etc. Anyone who likes the music should be welcome on the scene and if they wear beer towels/wristbands/black-fist necklaces etc then surely it's a sign of commitment with a nod to the '70's.
