I like the term and oddball oddities we've got in the history books.

I' ll name one..please name more!

I love lots of dancers with a jazzy tinge ... but am never sure why some became big on the scene, whilst others never did ...

Ones that took off included the Dynatones, Cal Tjader "Soul Sauce", Spooner's Crowd "2 In the Morning", Ramsey Lewis "Wade In The Water", "In Crowd" & others, Soulful Strings "Burning Spear", Markeys "Last Night", Phil Upchurch "You Can't Sit Down" & more.

Then you've got tracks such as Paul Humphrey "Cochise", Commodores "Human Zoo", Brass Construction "Movin" and similar jazz funk styled items.  

There were also the very bluesy cuts that were big 60's plays at places like the Wheel; KoKo Taylor "Wang Dang Doodle", Little Milton "Ain't No Big Deal / Who's Cheatin Who",  Jimmy McCracklin "the Walk" & the like.

Good Question, I have a copy of the 7' press on HMV from a few years back only coz i liked it so just played at home, maybe been played out on Northern soul Scene, not sure, it would take a DJ with big Balls to spin it but it does have that feel to it, love it

Yea that's True Kirsty, The 7' Single i have has a lot of that stuff edited out as the LP version is well too long for the dance floor at over 5 mins long, just love those Violin  strings and the breaks make it ideal for spins back drops an clapping, puts a smile on my face anyway

Personally I think it's a fantastic track. Only heard it played once (Colin Curtis, Peterborough all nighter) and though I love it, he/it was soundly boo'd by a section of the crowd!

I went to a Casino oldies allnighter once and On Broadway by George Benson packed the dancefloor.  To this day I'm still bemused by this.

 

Great, great record. Soul inflected rock really rather than soul. David Cassidy did a version which is also great,

Sounded like nothin' else at the time but worked so well. Still an all time fave.

Does this ever get played these days? Chinese trappings and a mandolin solo!

Well I first heard this as a kid on the Sunday world service radio we always had on before dinner......probably 69 to 72 and as it's unique it always struck a chord..

Next time I heard it was at KGB Sheffield courtesy of Nev Wherry RIP, where it was massive.

George's version was a biggie on the MS scene for quite a while back in time.

A 1966 UK 45 .... was played at clubs like the Wheel right off from being a new release. As was "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" & a bit later, "Groovin With Mr. Bloe".

Not that weird but certainly out of left field when one of the Kingspinners used to play it. At least one time maybe more, wish I could name and shame lol.

 

 

When you think of the stuff they had and the others being played at the time, grates on me now even worse.

Always thought that this one was a bit different, but i loved it and eventually managed to get a copy.

I've got this on both the UK and US versions, great track
