Not sure this has been done before.

It may be interesting and quite diverse.

I think mine wouid have to be Maze in the mid 80s - when Joy & Pain was an anthem. Saw them at Mcr Apollo.

The percussion guy was particularly impressive.

  • I’ve seen very few live soul acts if I’m honest, however I would choose Edwin Starr.  I saw him multiple times with ‘The Team’. Several times singing to backing tracks and on one (brilliant, as i

Ray Pollard at Yarmouth weekender was tremendous. Live vocal superb and he seemed genuinely taken aback by the reception ….”wait till I tell my wife about this!”

Forgot about the originals, amazing, the whole room seemed to gasp, as one of the vocalists erupted onto song, never seen that at any concert before.

Yeah I was there for that one, one of the best acts I've seen.

I remember a fantastic night at Wolverhampton Civic in the late 80's, I saw Martha Reeves, Marv Johnson and Jnr Walker.  Incredible night, the atmosphere was electric.  Jnr Walker was last on, they did the old James Brown thing where a guy comes on to tell him his time his up.  He disappeared still playing the sax, you could hear the sound around the building and then he appeared through the back doors of the hall, he walked through the crowd who were still on their feet, clapping and cheering.  There was a parting of the crowd as he went to the front still got down on his knees and played the sax, to a thunderous applause.  Incredible, a night never to be forgotten.

I was at that Teena Marie gig too, which was fantastic. Sadly her last ever UK performance.

Jackson Five Wakefield Theatre Club 1979.

Whitney Houston Earls Court 1993.

Edwin Starr Trentham Gardens 1997.

Herb Johnson at Silk Lounge, Philadelphia, October 2001, practically walked in off the street, onto the stage, grabbed the mic, band started up and he began singing, what a fucking voice!  Not exactly dressed for the occasion, looked very much like and ordinary Dude.  Fantastic memories.  In the UK it was Al Wilson at Cleggy for me, another fantastic voice and a true gent, lovely to meet and chat to him, R.I.P. to both.

I have seen quite a few at hammersmith odion , and dunstable calafornia ballroom , shades morthampton   and wigan  but i think my money is on curtis mayfield (the impressions) at birmingham , (think it was samanthas) in the early 70,s

The Impressions on their final tour, just incredible.

Gladys Knight - Blenheim Palace - She was amazing and still has it, all of ‘it’.

Tower of Power - a couple of times and their energy and musicianship is fabulous, can’t wait for them to return to the UK.
