I know there have been various topics about hearing our music in ‘strange’ places. I also know that this is far more common place today.

But I was very surprised to hear Prince Phillip Mitchell’s version of Keep On Talking in Morrisons yesterday!

slightly veering off topic............had to have a brain scan in hospital....as they keep you in the chamber for 30 mins and you have to keep still you can take a CD in, they play it for you in the chamber.

Bit of a mistake......as  minutes into my northern soul compilation comes a voice over the chamber speakers ...."can you keep your feet still..its making your head move"

Its the Spotify lists, amazing how varied some peoples tastes are, unless in places like Tesco, where I've heard Terry Callier, its marketing aimed at the over 50s which a bulk of us are, who are especially in these times, wealthier. 

In a bar/cafe in Stavanger, Norway. Last stop on the cruise Terry Callier Ordinary Joe comes on. Mind blown! And PP Arnold was the entertainment on board the ship. 

I Kid you not , Kidderminster Morrisons last night " Bobby Hebb- Love Love Love" and  "James Barnett- Keep on Talking " in between the pop music , a pleasant surprise 

Now even Dunelm are at it ," Darrell Banks , Our Love Is In The Pocket " , shopping in Kidderminster is becoming a tonic 

The other day in Morris ons I heard The Impressions - It's alright. 

Last night in a hotel's Restaurant just outside of Stirling:

Maybe not that unusual to any British. But didn't expect it. Nice way for the missus and me to kick off a two weeks holiday in Scotland. Kids didn't like it though 😉

Well Co-op in Chippenham across the road from my house now has Northern playlist going - bought my milk today to Wally Cox - This Man - bit surreal to be quite honest!

Watched a film " fly me to the moon " newish release Movie based on moon landing and these young astronauts and staff stood outside an air hanger dancing to Frank Wilson on the radio. Strange to pick an unrealised record when so many timeless records that they could of played from that year. Just my opinion 🤷 for what it's worth 😉

Her previously unreleased songs seem to be popular in movie soundtracks. In the 2016 film "War on everyone" starring Alexander Skarsgard & Michael Pena in one scene Chris Clark Somethings Wrong is playing.👍

Heard 'Inspirations - Your Wish Is My Command' in B&Q last weekend, the unexpected thing was I'd heard it a week before in the same store!

My daughter (now 40 but lived in a home with soul music for most of those years) sent a txt saying she heard Northern in the supermarket. She Identified it as "Keep on Talking" but it turned out to be Texas who currenlty have a cover produced by Spooner Oldham.

Talking of Daughters , our's decided to phone home at 2:30 am a few years back , whilst attending an all-night rave to tell me she was in the chill out room with a few mates , and how chuffed she was ( having been brought up in a home with Northern always in the background) that she recognised Frank Wilson & none of her mates had a clue what it was .

Relieved it was nothing serious ( hiding my annoyance at being woken at such an ungodly hour ) thanked her for sharing it with me & went back to bed , when I told the missus who had also been woken by the phone ringing who & why she responded " That's your fault" .

Last Friday met up with a friend for a coffee in his local pub/ restaurant type place, quite old fashioned, when Papa Bear & the Cubs…”You’re so fine” comes over the pub sound track followed by various other rare soul tunes. Surreal I thought.

Listening to a  BBC Radio 4 play from 1994 on Sounds. " "Whodunnits"  section

" Terminus"..the lead Police Detective ( Imelda Staunton) refers a number of times to being  "Southern Soul" fan....thought I heard Aretha ( not sure) but episode 3 features " Freedom Train" by James Carr.

Syl Johnson's "I Hear The Love Chimes" in a Hammersmith pub at the weekend. Made me interrupt the conversation with my wife to say "Wow!". The playlist was soul and funk slanted but nothing really similar (I remember AWB, Raphael Saadiq, Gap Band). 

Love Chimes did make it to a 45 B side but I think of it as an album track (from one of his great early-mid 70s Hi albums) so pretty obscure. 

I find music in public places - pubs, supermarkets, chazzas etc - a lot more interesting nowadays with a lot of more obscure stuff getting an airing. Probably it's the Spotify effect and some more enlightened managers allowing their staff to choose a playlist.

My favourite local chazza chain is St. Peter's Hospice, I always hear some great jazz and soul in their shops. Whoever schedules their "station" has really good taste. Just a shame my hit rate in their vinyl bins has fallen off a cliff lately!
