Another new series that I've just started and shows promise is "Patience" , a UK police drama centred on an autistic CRO worker using her abilities to help out on criminal cases , she's very much the same as the lead character in the great movie "Temple Grandin".

Watched the first episode to see what they have made of the excellent French original Astrid Murder in Paris, very pale imitation , I'd have maybe enjoyed it more if I hadn't watched all four of the French series, I'll continue out of curiosity as Lou didn't watch Astrid. Astrid (Patience) was a lot more timid and you felt more for her ,Patience comes across as a lot more confident, without giving too much away the developing relationship between Astrid and the detective was a very slow burn and one of the most interesting aspects of the French original. I didn't get the same feeling of Patience being lost in the outside world as I did with Astrid. Must have been quite hard for the actress playing Patience to make the character her own without copying Astrid from the French version.

If you haven't seen Astrid I would definitely recommend seeking out at least the first episode and you might see what I mean. I'm not saying Patience isn't worth watching just from what I saw the French original in my opinion is so much better.

Thanks for that , I got through the first two episodes but found my interest waning somewhat towards the end , I'm heading over to the continent right now as I was unaware it was a remake , should have known better with it being a Ch4 effort.

What a ridiculous idea , show the original french drama whilst simultaneously airing a weak and insipid rehash.

I shall watch "Astrid et Raphaelle" on my usual source as I haven't entertained CH4 or CH5 for years.

CH5 did the same thing by making a rehash of the marvellous "All Creatures Great and Small" , that remake was a truly awful production.

I just binge watched Swedish thriller The Breakthrough, and enjoyed it very much.

I also watched the first episode of On Call on Prime last night. A cop thriller - looking good.

Binged it yesterday. One of those series were I was disappointed when it ended. Hope there’s more to come.

Astrid, the French version I believe, is far better.

We watched the second episode of Patience last night and it didn't change my opinion that the french version is far better. That said i wouldn't want to discourage anyone from watching Patience, you'd have to have watched the french version to see the differences. The vulnerability of Patience/Astrid does not come across and invokes in my opinion less sympathy for the character in the channel 4 version.

I didn't come back to the thread to comment further on the pros and cons of the two but it seems i have, the reason I posted again as an aside to the actual series on another thread we post about hearing Northern in unusual places, at the end of one episode in series 4 i think it was as the credits were rolling in the background Marion Black Who Knows was playing, the following week there was another more modern tune playing which from memory was I think by a French group , I searched but couldn't find a sound bite anywhere.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but looking for something to watch the other night we stumbled upon "Lee".  Stars Kate Winslet about the former model turned wartime photographer Lee Miller.  Excellent film.

A genuine "must watch" has just premiered , if you are of an age to remember the events of December 1988 then this is to be seen , a warning regarding the traumatic content is well placed but it's a series that sets the bar extremely high and is a breath of fresh air amongst the usual tripe offered up on TV these days.

"Lockerbie : A Search for Truth"

I viewed the first 3 episodes and found the storyline fascinating and well portrayed. I'd heard of a victim's mother frequenting the Lockerbie site and laying in the depression in the ground which she believed was caused by her daughter hitting the ground, in order to feel closer to her. I was surprised that the attention to detail in the first half of the series even included that.  Then I watched part four and the conspiracy theory began in earnest. I can understand Jim Swire as a grief stricken father wanting to uncover the truth but c'mon. Abdel Basset al Megrahi was as guilty as sin. I didn't bother watching the final episode.

The French series is far better. I do like French tv/movies - there's just something different about it. And that isn't a queue for a smart arse to say it's the language. 🤨

I'm currently watching one of "Walters" programmes on catch up 4 - The Sleepers, a Dutch thriller. Not as good as some of his others but worth a watch. I also binge watched On Call streaming on Prime. Very good with a 7.6 IMDB rating - very good too.

You might enjoy Norman ‘Nordic Noir’ /‘Scandi Noir’ programmes if you haven’t already watched them, like The Killing or The Bridge.

Sleepers is also on my 'to watch' list. Just started to watch 'Black Tulip' another one of Walters, only a couple of episodes in but I can recommend it.

Definitely Sky.  I watched it on NOW.  Very well-made biopic film, which is becoming quite the trend with Sky Originals of late.  'The Colour Room' was another Original that impressed me.  Anyone who's seen 'Lee' may also want to check out 'One Life', also on Sky Cinema / NOW - another war-time biopic based on Nicholas 'Nicky' Winton, who helped rescue hundreds of children from Czechoslovakia before the Nazi occupation closes its borders.

I assume a “naughty stick” means ‘someone might be missing out’ with regards to revenue? Or am I wrong ?

Hi Chris

I hope you're ok. I've been binge watching Walter's The Day on 4. I'm enjoying it, it's a Belgian thriller.

We watched 'Companion' at the weekend, went in blind after watching Mark Kemodes review where he said avoid any trailers or spoilers and it paid off, was an enjoyable 90 minutes, more thriller than horror

Excellent.  I watched Kermode's review of this film too and it peaked my interest.  I agree with him that the trailer (which I saw at the cinema before a screening of Eggers' new Nosferatu) is totally spoiler-ridden, so it's a shame that I'd be going into this one knowing a lot of the premise already.  Would you say this is a film that is recommended for the big-screen experience, or not that necessary and it wouldn't matter a great deal just waiting for it to stream at home?

Interesting point about the genre too.  Although the trailer presented some Horror elements and tropes, I thought the way it was edited made it look like a slick, yet fairly twisted, Thriller with a drop of dark humour to boot.

Regarding big screen/home format,  I would say either, nothing be really lost/gained apart from the normal advantages with whichever format for me

On the horror/thriller call, it was only a 15 cert and  my wife who is most definitely a non-horror fan says was a bit violent but not too gory and enjoyed it

This is on the to watch list after some positive reviews.

I try and avoid all trailers these days as half the film and most of the good bits seem to be in them nowadays 😕

Thanks Mike, appreciate it.  One to think about if free for some movie-going, but not desperate to see it.

Is anyone watching Virdee on BBC1? All filmed in Bradford (my home city) & it's interesting to see all those familiar locations on the telly! Doesn't do much for Bradford's already tarnished reputation, but it's well worth a look!

So what you do , don’t miss on Netflix Americano Primevil 6 episodes of what it was really like in the Wild West , Next time a Mormon knocks on your front door don’t open it LoL

Just managed to wangle Paramount + included with Sky. Landman is very good.

Don't know if it has been mentioned before but The Sketch Artist Walter Presents is pretty good. French Canadian police drama. There are bits that stretch the imagination but the stories are good. Basically it's about a police sketch artist in a special unit who has powers of intuition and can make people recall things they have seen. If it would annoy you for someone describing a person in a passing car late at night in  one moment to say it was dark then the next say the colour of the drivers eyes then it's probably not for you. I am for the moment trying to overlook little things like that as the back stories are interesting along with the actual crimes committed.

I just finished 'Adolescence' on Netflix

For me, it certainly deserves all the praise it is getting, someone wrote 'brilliant and harrowing'

Review below, though would suggest to take the time out to watch all 4 epsiodes first

Have just finished my latest binge watch , that of the wonderful 1979 UK production  "Danger UXB".

Based loosely on "Unexploded Bomb - The Story of Bomb Disposal, the memoirs of Major A. B. Hartley, MBE, RE" it's the tales of a bomb disposal unit during the Second World War starting in the dark days of the Blitz in 1940 when we faced the onslaught of the Austrian painters advances all alone.

A good accurate portrayal of the technical side of the job involved.

All thirteen episodes are available on Dailymotion.

That's one for me to look out for.

Calling Hitler the Austrian painter reminded me of that brilliant film MAX starring John Cusack and Noah Taylor. The story of Max Rothman and his meeting of a young Austrian painter A Hitler.

I've been watching Quarry. It's about a Vietnam veteran who returns home and gets sucked into the underworld. Some great acting, brilliant character performances. And; it has a wicked sound track theme, proper soul and blues music from the little club scenes, and whenever there's a radio playing. It has people flicking through vinyl 45's and albums and record shops.  It's set in Memphis, and was filmed there and in New Orleans. It also features the racial tensions that existed at the time, and the racist violence that the black community had to endure.

Well worth a watch.

Edit

Been watching a bit more and upgrading my well worth a watch to it's an extremely good watch - best thing I've watched for ages.
