Just thought I'd throw this up and see if it generates any interest:

In the various collections I've put together over the years I always seem to have built smaller collections within them. Some examples are: I collect Motown Mini LPs and am striving to complete them. Another example is I collect W/Demos of 45s wherever applicable. (I once had Larry Clinton Issue and Demo in my hands, knew exactly which one was rarer, but opted for the Demo!). I also collect Ollie McLaughlin's records, (on W/Demos where applicable).

My question is this...have you any collections within your collection that you're always on the look at for stuff to add to. One advantage of these 'smaller' collections is that when there's nothing to buy at a record fair or similar , I always look for somethibg for these mini collections. It means I very rarely leave a show without SOMETHING.

I'm now on my 4th collection, for my sins having had to sell the previous accumulations for varying reasons inclusive of the steel strike (late 70's) to the latter domestic indifferences (2000) when I vowed never to collect again! I kept a token bundle of Motown pieces, just for the sake/keepsake........but I got the fertilizer bug again and the bundle grew and grew......Yep the mini LP's, acetates etc. just so I could keep trawling through the old record boxes at varying haunts. It soon became the numbers game, and as the wants lists grew smaller I branched out into the subsidiaries, which also got to the numbers thing, so decided to do all the labels swallowed up by the Mighty Motown Machine, you know the Ric-Tic/Golden World stuff, then the Revilot's and Wingates, then I realised that a lot of the subsidiaries in particular also released dirge, so it proved to be somewhat of a wake-up call, and whilst quite a lot of the pieces I'd been hoarding weren't valuable as such, trainspotting was never something I could see the point of, so apart from the main Motown collection.... errm and perhaps a few worthwhile collectable labels, the numbers game has been curtailed, duplicates (i.e. issues and demos) apart from the odd one or two are now a thing of the past, unless I duplicate through unawares, and I do......I just collect Detroit now, oh and anything produced there, so please don't mention Philadelphia, Chicago, New York etc. etc. my tunnel vision glasses are still working .......it's just my ears giving me jip

GOOD THREAD ITS FUNNY HOW YOU CAN ACCUMULATE DIFFERENT STUFF,BEEN GETTING A LOT OF DOO WOP RECENTLY EARLY CHANCELLORS GROUP STUFF,STILL LOVE MY BRITISH TAMLA ALSO AND ALSO BEEN GETTING ALOT OF NEW RELEASES VIA CRAZY BEAT ,ANYTHING TO KEEP THE EAR FRESH.HAVE A HABIT OF GETTING US DETROIT STUFF NOW AND AGAIN ON BRITISH AND BELIEVE ME THERE IS PLENTY OF THEM.

Like most responses I do the same, Motown promos, Golden World, Revilot, Loma, Mirwood etc plus also Male groups things like Hesitations, Parliaments, Precisions and artist things, Deon Jackson

Being in Canada I have also accrued a decent run of early Blue and Yellow Tamla label stuff, some of which may be for sale/trade at Hitsville this year.

Also living in Holland picture sleeves are another temptation, for instance I have 5 different Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes "Yesterday I Had The Blues".......................but as its the best record ever made IMVHO thats not really a bad thing

Used to 'cut out' DJ playlists and set about collecting the list, hated cover-ups because they scuppered that. Was in Ann Arbor working last month and went passed Ollie McLaughlin's old house so jealous of an Ollie collection. But would say Motown white demos are always something I bag, even if it is a 'hit' record. Have a decent Shrine pile even although its a bit of a cliche but that started with wanting a big DC soul collection so it fits in. Never been a total compleatist tho. Wouldn't buy an expensive record I don't like just to make up a set.

PS. Anyone collect the Cardboard Topps Motown Pic Records. I have a few doubles but I'm a couple short too. Looking to buy or trade a Miracles - Going To A Go Go - anyone?

I find it completely impossible to sustain a collection of ANYTHING. And I think I know why. I enjoy the ctual collecting more than I do having the item. So it's all about the thrill of the chase I think - it must be, because I look at 300+ white Island label 45's and think "why did I buy half of those, I've never even played them"? And when I get a full set or a near full set of something, I sell it!

I'm a bit of a sucker for 101's, 1001's etc....Just love the thought of a tune being the first song on a label..getting my anorack and heading for the door

I find it hard to believe anyone else on here has the following collection within a collection habit.

The only label I collect outright is the 12" US catalogue of Sugarhill ! Almost all of those I still need are titles I only want to pay next to nothing for as they are generally poor tracks from 1984 and 1985.

I also have a collection of well over 100+ Japanese Jazz Fusion & Boogie LP's (Jap artists) which I am always trying to add to. I can't resist the artwork and often abstract photos from such, liner notes, and obi's. Jap packaging is unrivalled.

Sometimes I think my collection is made up of small collections.

I collect labels: Invictus/Hot Wax/MM, Joda/Jad/Jomada/Jocida, Designer (gospel), Double Shot/Whiz, and something I can't tell yet

Some artists (not always completist): Fabulettes, George Jackson, Bobby Powell, Joneses (45's only), Quiet Elegance

Luckily I don't care if it's a issue or wd copy as long as it's not stereo/mono copies, I hate those!

As for "regional" collections within my collection, I have a thing for New Orleans and especially the ALON label (which is suprsingly hard to complete, not that I'm fanatic about it or am trying too hard...but you know... ). A couple of minutes ago I recieved the last missing Eldridge Holmes 45 on ALON that I didn't have (#9013), and FINALLY also "Call The Sheriff" by Senator Jones on WHURLEY BURLEY (which has eluded me for years, and then all of a sudden two copies turn up in less than a week ).

As for artists: Pic & Bill has got a pretty large section in my 45s collection.

I collect anything by Hoagy Lands ,Sam Dees ,Bobby Womack ,George Jackson , anything penned by Spooner Oldham /Dann Penn , any UK Tamla Motown [ but I have to get them from a car boot or junk shop etc ] .Best Wishes ,Eddie

Action label releases (45 and LP) - got all of the LPs (I think) and I'm short either two or three of the 45s...

Harrold Burrage 45s... only a few of his pre 1963 releases to get.

Onederful / Mar-v-lus / M-pac / Toddlin' Town (quite a few spaces in these).

Started off collecting Okeh but moved outside of it to collect Major Lance's releases on other labels.

Re the Bob & Earl have you ever seen one, I have seen it on a couple of listings (SKM and ??) but have never seen it in the flesh. I have been trying to collect Loma on and off for the last 25 years and never seen a copy even on lists. Have asked on here before and it was inconclusive of its existence, even Mr Croasdell and Tony Rounce (I think) were not able to confirm it existed on Loma but I think did say they had seen it on WB, its on UK (cheap) and also French & German I am sure, so would suggest it may have been relatively successful, which makes it exclusivity a bit weird. Could it possibly been listed on Loma but never issued on this?? Or am I as usual just looking in wrong places.

Mr Manship do you have any thoughts, its one of these ones thats driven me nuts progressively over the years, even when I had stopped buying 7"'s this was one I kept searching for and never saw it.

On Johns and CM site it doesn't appear as not available, which surely you would have expected to be through their hands at some point.

And to keep on topic, as you will see have collected Loma, have over 80** i think, almost all soul/blues except for the horrendous Belfast Gypsies and another I cant remember that I think is Kim Fowley related, also horrible but allegedly collectible in states, only bought both cause they were under a £1!! I think that is the dilemma for label collectors where there is non soul stuff, I have avoided buying any on such Loma so far and think I only need about 4 to complete the soul listings (I think, a Walter Foster anyone??) and its tempting for a full run ala Mr G

Over years have always wanted to buy up Blue Rock,Arctic Wheelsville and D-Town as I see them but they have become either too expensive or I see something I want more than the I desire a label piece.

In 80's did start out to collect all Chuck Jackson, Little Milton and James Carr 45's, and got a fair few (so many freebies as they were so cheap then) and what a quality return with these 3!

Have loosely collected Philly International to the extent have a reasonable amount of demos and issues, but gave most of the UK ones away, DOH. Philly LP's next??

Now would like to pick up more Salsoul/Prelude WD 12"'s to booster my disco collection, however our French colleagues have put the price of these up and there are also some howlers on both labels (more on Salsoul actually on reflection)>

However overriding think I have always had so many wants the avid collector in me takes second place to the chase for that new sound (nowadays more likely to be new release CD's!!) so the label completion pieces will have to wait until I am last man standing and picking them up for peanuts!!

My memory tells me that I've seen it. Having said that I can't remember where! With it being an ealier number you would presume it gained a release on US Loma. How could anyone have faith in a US soul record (the European releases show some faith), if it had no US original release to build on? Strange? Is there no mention of it on the Best of Loma 7 LP series? I haven't got any of them.

Maybe it's one of those quandries that collecting throws up every now and then. There are loads of 45s that you don't realise are as hard to find as they are, until...you really start looking for them.
