I picked up Elvis Costello's version of 'Getting Mighty Crowded' out of curiosity. It's alright, sounds like Elvis Costello basically! :D

I think my first post was about, Summertime Special in the late 70s.

I was a 14 year old, just begining to learn about Northern Soul. We had some aunties and uncles visiting, and the TV was on. On come the Rolly Pollys, and proceed to launch into a 'wacky' version of the Sherries - Put your lovin' arms around me.

My mother's ears prick up, and she says to me:

"Isn't this one of your Northern Soul records? Go on, show your aunty how you dance"

:D:Dshhh.gif:D

Marilyn Manson's version of Tainted Love is pretty off the wall, but strangely compelling.

I have a feeling that Put Your Loving Arms Around Me is something of a standard isn't it? The Sherrys version was a cover of a pop hit? Could be wrong. Incidentally - what a great sax solo!

----------just like "Wanting You" then, taken from some musical or other - I have a vague memory of seeing it on TV on a Sunday afternoon after a niter - did not compute :D

Picture the scene:

I'm 15 years old and have been three times to Wigan Casino. I'm trying to recover one Sunday evening, during which I've had to do the obligatory trip to Granny's house. I'm feeling pretty spaced to say the least and then all of a sudden I hear "Put Your Arms Around me" coming out of the telly - sung by a women wearing a long frilly dress and bonnet, holding an ornate parasol - it's "The Good Old Days"!!!!!!!

Talk about culture shock :D:Dshhh.gif:D

Put Your Arms Around Me

Trivia question: At exactly the same time the Sherrys was a big - 73? - there was another massive Wigan spin that dates from 1927 - at least that's when the song was written. Anyone care to name it? Title and artist....

Remember it, did have it on 12" & I think I've got that on some complilation somewhere - theyre were some awesome house tunes in the late 80s & early 90's which at some point will get 2nd plays somewhere in the modern rooms of the future !

No mate - definately Good Old Days - I can remember the audience all dressed in period costume and that compere with the big whiskers and all the alliteration.

Scarred for life, I tells ye.

Still, could have been worse - it might have been on my Grandma's other old fave...

Aah, De Camptown Races .....................

Don't know how old you are but I bet your Gran listened to 'Sing Something Simple' on the radio on a Sunday tea time. All grans did

Then it was Pick of the Pops (Top Ten), and they all started moaning before they went to the pub for a Mackeson.

But then again, it might have been different out of Sheffield. whistling.gif

Yep  Same in Oldham  My Dad of course called it "Sing Something Sinfull". Mind you he also called Dusty Springfield "Springy Dustcart"

There were several occasions when I brought my latest prize home from an Allnighter only to have my Mum or Dad start singing along cos they knew another version. Maybe we should do a thread with Northern Soul songs that are covers of Standards.

Here's my first two:

My Heart cries for You - my Version - Porgy & Monarchs - Mum and Dad - Dinah Shaw.

To the Ends of the Earth - Tony Middleton / Nat King Cole

Any more? Feel free to start a new thread

That's another one! original by Miss Toni Fisher I believe - more of a 60s pop hit than show tune I think.

Dad was singing the Vicki Carr version and told me that Susan Farrar's was crap.

You should listen to your dad sometimes

You may be right Ric Tic - and thanks for reminding me of the cover up name. I don't think Wigan were too far behind on that particular sound and it had quite a short life before Pye issued it over here. Charming record - sounds all wrong today though - agree?
