  1. I bought a copy of this in 1990 from a dealer in Georgia who said he got it off the artist, I then picked another up a few years later. Like Mark rightly says the Japanese really were (are) the leaders in most kinds of soul music - although this imo isn't strictly deep soul, it is exactly what they like. In fact to further back this point up I first became aware of the record from a couple of the famous huge Far Eastern wants lists from the mid 80's. This side is still a firm favourite after all those years.
  2. What a fascinating interview, Sam Motley sounds like a real character - I bet he was a great laugh to be around! I recognised his name but never realised how often his name appeared on records I own....Thanks for posting this up.
  3. I have the 10" acetate of this , which was part of Gillys collection that i bought from him - it is credited to and written as Tobie Lark.
  4. The Funny face girl original acetate has been in my collection for a fair few years now, The Chris Bartley acetate Allan coney traded it to me many moons ago, i recently sold it to a mate in Europe.
  5. I was working at Anglo at the time , so on my way home one night i called in at Cleckheaton to drop off the package for Nige, Like Andy says the Magnetics was in there , i think the second copy of Danny Moore - Allrite but for the life of me i can't remember the other titles ( Carl probably will ) maybe Nomads , i think 4 in all ,they were from Kopps collection. The Deon Jackson came a short time after that ( i think ) It was certainly £400 and I'm glad it stays with Carl - the only one who can play it !
  6. The crazy world of Northern Soul with Dave Clegg , what a star ! One year at Cleethorpes a group of about ten of us were chatting including Cheryl (Dave's other half) All of a sudden Cheryl screams "Oh no it's Cleggy " everyone ran off leaving me with Dave he says " what the fucks up with that lot ?, you haven't farted have you ? He made me have it alright ! R.I.P .
  7. Interesting stuff Tim... I remember you telling me this story in the early hours at a nighter. He does look a handful though, look at the size of his fist and forearm !
  8. Early 1990/1 Craig M sent a couple of thousand 45s to the Tod warehouse - Martin K had brokered the deal (infact Craig had been to the Uk some months earlier and had a day at the warehouse) Anyway while looking through the boxes Browny shouts to me" dya know Dennis Edwards on Int Soulville ? " which of course i didn't , he put it on and of course a pretty exciting double sider ! Tim rang Martin with the details and he found a copy or two within a short pace of time ,he searched high and low but it was never kicking around. There are many twists and turns to the story as it goes, so much so that while writing stuff for the digging book i said to Browny the D.E story needs to be documented factually.. i mean look how many versions are in this thread ! Ah when we spoke about it mine and his versions are not strictly speaking identical, but the above is how it was. I remember you coming up Mark a few years after in the V.W Beatle (i think to pick a D.E up . I thought the record would have gone far more popular than it did - what a incredible double sider !
  9. Ah yeh that's the one....nice one confirming that Andy - i was half and half about posting my reply incase i had it wrong... that aside a very rare record indeed !
  10. Some years ago at the Cleethorpes weekender , John Anderson pulled a copy of this out from a 25 count box ( of various titles) I think he was selling it for a friend from America . John did start to tell me the history of the 45 , but Al Coney let a stink bomb off so that was the end of that ! I'm almost certain it was a white label v-tone and about 3 grand , but i'm not 100% certain of that - not much help i know.....
  11. Brilliant post that is Bob , just a little bit envious of that experience !
  12. Yeh all things are ticking over, it will certainly be out this year. Because we are not writers , authors etc .. it is all a learning curve ! All the contributions have been kindly done by people with passion for free, also all the proof reading ,editing + the million and one other jobs in connection with this kind of project are on the whole being done by friends - so the net result is a longer time scale. Also to mention is if this sells ok ( some 300 people ) reserved copies before it goes out + my mate is sorting out world wide distribution through his publisher, every penny is going to charity after production costs. I have to knuckle down and complete my stories now , most of my spare time has been spent setting out, editing and adding to some of the contributions - the problem is ballancing up the way the stories have been written, then making them reader friendly, it does have to flow... he says ...! I will add to this post Monday when back from Gateshead, with a more detailed summary of what is actually happening. Thanks for the interest so far.
  13. A real shame , will miss his trips over here to the shed , the stories and the crack. Guys like Melv are few and far between - he was buying and loving this music before i was born aswell as meeting the artists at the time . Goodbye to a fellow Conisbrough lad, very sad indeed. atb Melv.
  14. Ady if you are struggling with this i have it here somewhere - drop me a email.
  15. Hello John that's right , you obviously got Tims , for some reason i thought the flip was just blank i can't for the life of me figure out the Cutlass connection cos like i mentioned before the scan chalky posted up is definately not original - i only just clicked on the link that takes you to Pats auction , it would be impossible for it to be bona fida cos speedlimits was a made up name and the actual group iwho recorded it is different. Hope to see you out and about soon.atb A
  16. Like mentioned earlier the original acetate was sold by Pat Brady for Tim A, i can remember because i wanted it but it was out of my price range at the time - if the truth be known the record is a victim of it's own quality, it will never work it is just too good. I've no clue where that copy went to. Re the Cutless acetate that is a made up custom press of Rob's i remember him doing it and playing it off it. The original acetate was a 7" large centre off creamy colour with "can't say no" typed on the label , speedlimit was a made up name (i think) Tim many years ago mentioned Greg had found some tapes containing two tracks one being the exact recording from the original acetate and a different superior mix without the whisper replys - Tim let me have a recording of the diff mix to play out . I play it to a empty floor unless Al coneys in the room (Aycliffe ) lads always had great taste and will continue to do so... Also there was a group name credited to the master tape recordings that did at least three released 45's to my knowledge but that would be up to Tim to tell you who..
  17. A truly complete talent, two of his 45's caused me much suffering financially but i had to have them all..... some one did me a c/d of unissued stuff that as far as i'm aware never came out i will look for that. Other than the odd few like Al Green he takes some beating !
  18. Two interesting pieces, another unsung hero, i remember the "Love" 45 being plentifull when i was at Tod towers great two sides.
  19. I can remember Nick buying this 45 from Browny i was working there at the time, i dare say it's 25 years ago. It came in a box of stuff Simon Soussan had sent over also in the deal Nick got the Conner Cagle and the Batchelors four - Always let your good side show , which cost him an arm and a leg at the time. The 45 in question i can't really help with any definitive facts other than i feel certain it was a pink' lilac couloured label with black font and incredibly obscure.. I can tell you though that it wasn't that good kinda weak vocals with ill fitting lyrics, infact i remember trying to talk him out of buying it ah .When the others came up on ebay i saw them and listened to them and smirked to myself Nick is gonna bid on these and i nearly did him like he had me many times , but decided against it. A few weeks later Nick came to mine with all the variants and put me through listening to them all trying to pick out the differences, i think we recorded them aswell so he could keep listening to them (he didn't have a stereo at the time) He played it at the first Lifeline niter, the night he poked himself in the eye with the mike ! Great stuff... can't for the life of me remember the artist though, Nicks brother i guess holds the key to the info cos i assume the 45's are still there with him - it would be a shame for the records to be broke up and sold though. R.I.P .
  20. Nick called at my house out of the blue some 20 years ago with a handfull of 45's , his tools and a towel - he was up to the neck in bother..... so i said there's a few jobs to do here, here's a front and back door key (which he still has to this day ) come and go as you please ! This visit was for a couple of years and one of many in which we extended and converted the new house, he kinda became one of the family - treating my two kids like his own (i know he had no contact with his own kids) His life story is beyond belief ,it really is you couldn't make it up as he would say ... i figured while at mine he was at least fed and watered and away from bother... There are countless memories here is one After returning from the pub Nick said "we haven't taken the hovercraft and speed boat out for a while " so off to the duck pond 2 in the morning , after a short while the hover craft gets stuck right in the middle... round and round i said" Nick it;s gonna sink, it's the kids " "no chance " he says so a deal had to be done i offered any £10 record from the shed, he rolled his jeans up (the only pair he had) still keeping his shoes on (the only pair he had) off he went - just in time he reached out, caught his foot in something and went head first sinking the hover craft and himself, he lost his shoe a sock and the hover craft ! As if by magic a police patrol car pulled up and asked what was going on. To be honest i was pissing meself, the police pointed out that recently youths had been throwing stuff at the ducks, of course this was a million miles away from what we were doing.... Nick asked if they had a towel ah , they jotted down our names my addy and ages and advised us to start acting like our ages... That night probably cost me £100 for new shoes ,socks and a boat + the £10 record, but money well spent ! "You haven't burnt my head hair for a few days" he would say, "come to think of it i haven't" he would bend down and up went the tuft at the front... "i canner believe you've just done that it stinks" he'd say then he would turn round and ask me to do the back, i would always slip and catch his ears..... If it was anyone else i guess it wouldn't be so funny, he was due to come up here and do some bits in the next week or two and sort out the spare copy of Sam Williams i saved for him, that is not to be but the same things that brought us together were there to the end. He will never be too far away i suppose and i reckon he will be with Kate now the woman who tried to destroy him so many times, he never quite got over her taking her life. He was a loyal and trustworthy friend who i miss already , going out just will not be the same anymore. So long mate.
  21. My original point and what was really supposed to have been a light hearted one..., but yeh you took the last weekend in June when Lifeline was on ! It's been and gone but no less rude ... i'm more than happy to sit back and watch everyone squabble and fall out over venues and dates, there really is too much take and very little give !
  22. . I ain't interested in getting into spats over such scenarios that aren't too important, but that said i don't post comments up if they are not true. When reffering to Bridlington weekender perhaps the context was a little jumbled on my part when i said "along came the Brilington weekender" you say it has been running for 9 years - that is great, but not something that i ever questioned . Lifeline had been going for 11 years with the same fixed dates - before the "clash " you mentioned there had not been any clashes so i assume your dates must have changed at some point ? But a free country like i commented .. Anyhow this is why i mentioned the weekender (s) ! Brid in particular because it was a turning point... really nothing more or nothing less. Now Rob Wigley was the guy i spoke to about the clash the place was Dumfries weekender and there was a couple of people stood during or at least part of the the time the conversation took place - Dave Box was one of them because we carried on with the general chatter about the state of the callender when Rob had left ! so Rob is one of the horses mouths that isn't being straight with you ! Next one is Pat Brady who i spoke to on the phone he called me regarding a matter that was between Pat and me but has it goes connected with Brid, the call was taped because of the nature of the matter so again your other horses mouth isn't being straight with you ! So the best of luck with Brid in the future i'm sure it will go from strength to strength, Lifeline couldn't stand the heat so it got out of the fire no dramas or bad feelings to any other promoters, in the slightest simple as that. That said a spade is a spade with me and for the record i have no problem speaking to Rob Wigley or Pat Brady face to face on any kind of terms . I really am suprised that Rob can't remember standing talking to me that day, There was other people around i will have to think back , like i say if Pat really does wanna go over that taped call i will be more than happy !
  23. Fascinating read Mike - thanks for posting.
