" and young America has been responsible
If we're talking Northern history then The Bang/The Blues/The Block (all the same dance pretty much) and The Fox are important as they were the big 'official' mod dances (long before my time of course being a mere pup in my 50s) remember my old mucker Vince Ayers swore that Northern dancing was essentially the Four Corners. Always love watching Franny dance - cool as a cucumber. Remember there was a very sharp couple used to come to Brian's Wheel revivals who used to do a sort of skipping dance (not unlike the Hully Gully above) in exact unison mirroring each other perfectly which I'm told was a key mod dance style from the Wheel of the mid-60s (though I'm sure I'll be corrected on all the above). Dx PS Philly Duck (brilliant Jerry Williams stormer)

Most expensive record ever broken?
I loaned a big batch of my best records (probably £20k++ worth in today's prices - this was back when I still had the goodies) to Les Cokell when he was ill, we arrived the next week to take him to a nighter to find he had 'helpfully' 'sorted them out for me' (the early onset altzheimers did that sort of thing) by stacking them across the floor of his front room all mixed up with Chris Morgan's collection - sadly he had trodden on my beloved green Luther Ingram in the process of laying them out putting a big crack in it - obviously I was very upset, but couldn't show it as Les would simply not have understood at that stage... And at then end of the day I chose to take a significant risk in lending them to him to cheer him up knowing he wasn't well. One strange one I had on a VERY cold night at Shotts (which was very hot indeed inside) was buying a stone mint George Smith, I took it out to the Crewe minibus and put it on the dashboard for safe keeping - unfortunately the in-nighter to -10ºC outside shock cracked the styrene - though so cleanly that it plays perfectly. New release Northern hits
Bobby Womack - Gypsy Woman - remember RS playing it at Morecambe and announcing it wasn't due for release in the States for another 3 weeks. Dx

Vocal V Inst Maybe The Definitive Answer?
Eleanor Rigby on the other side - lovely : ) - I had it for probably 25 years before I flogged it earlier this year, certainly pretty well known amongst Northern instrumental collectors (me as was). Dx

Bootlegs "are They Rare ?
Used to collect the awful Soul Galore instrumentals as a joke. Dx

Rainbow People
What utter shite - things like this make me glad I'm a mere pup of 50 and missed out on the mindless pop drivel of the mid-late 70s. As an aside, a source of great piss taking of my little brother who is a 'super fan' of the Stranglers (he's seen them over 400 times and manages their website etc etc) is the fact that the only other group Coursegood Music manage are the Worzels - he doesn't take kindly to suggestions they should do a double header tour together. Northern Soul Holiday On Ice
One Man and His Dog... I'll say no more than DJ, wife, sheep and dance floor. Dx

Robin Thicke V Marvin Gaye: Jack Ashford Has His Say
As it happens we saw them perform that live for the first time at a Coca Cola/Eddie Stobart junket a few years ago - despite being very drunk we immediately turned to each other and went 'LANDSLIDE' - it was also much more apparent in the backing in the live delivery. They CAN actually sing REALLY well. Dx

Jimmy Wensiora
Brilliant records - proper stuff. Dx

Unexpected Find
Remember a little second hand record shop round the corner from Sid Scarborough's in Hull opened up briefly early in 86 - they had six mint white demos of 'Bricks, Broken Bottles and Sticks' at £1.50 each - I detested it, so despite it already being popular and rapidly rising in value, I chose not to buy any (even to sell - didn't want to encourage people's interest in this drivel). Dx

The Wonder Of Woolies
I was told that Rob Smith ran the record department in Woolworth's in Nottingham at one point - don't know if it's true. Dx

Imagine If It Hadn't Made The Charts
An awful lot of these WERE played - Los Bravos at Peterborough Fleet early 80s, Len Barry certainly at The Scene and therefore almost certainly at the Wheel (a guy on here posted his memories a while back and made a point of saying his tracks were massive), Holland & Dozier - Pete told me the instrumental was played (I'm presuming the Mecca or Ritz - anyway he bought it back then and we still have it), Fontella Bass and Spencer Davis both played the Wheel frequently so would have been played (if only live), Lou Christie (Wheel mid 60s according to the Abardie's website and by Dave Evison in Ms), heard all the Detroit Emeralds tracks played at some time myself (specially their version of Do Me Right at the Unicorn), Backfield in Motion - Wheel. Believe Mr Bloe was played in Ms - certainly Electric Indian's version, bought it because I'd heard it and was collecting instrumentals at the time. As for the Showstoppers well... It was SO big over here when first released that it got reissued in the states being promoted as the big Mod sound in the UK, following a brief flush of fashionable interest in mods in New York after an article about them in US Vogue (65 from memory). Outlandish Label Designs
Gene Diamond on Mothers Records - owned by Frank Zappa I believe (?). Got a copy somewhere in the boxes upstairs. Dx

Outlandish Label Designs
Tarpon (A Love Reputation - Denise LeSalle) has got to rank high - a Tarpon is a very famous big game angling fish which is actually a giant (up to 300lb) herring. Sassy Kitten is great looking and weird. Dx

Unexpected Find
Found a mint issue of the Valentines at Merton Abbey Mills market - it was the only US record on the stall. Dx
-
Profiteering On New Or Recently Released 45's
What about the rules of honesty and honour - it's these sort of blood sucking scumbag tossers who poison the scene as a whole - whatever happened to welcoming and supporting newbies to Northern? Dx
-
Detroit Instrumental Old Gary Rushbrooke Spin
Just listened to it on youtube - it's the instrumental of Karate Boogalloo by Jerryo. Dx

Is This Tune Known? Id Anyone?
Sounds like they're taking the piss to me. Dx

Northern Soul Deejay Pay
Remember back when I was at art college and Paul Madden had a stall in the covered market in Hull that he had dreadful problems with the taxman trying to differentiate between personal collection sales and 'record dealing'. Dx

Tunes That Can Bring You To Tears
I really cried first time I heard her version of 'All I Do'. Lots of Margie Joseph things and Bobby Taylor's 'Does Your Mamma Know About Me?' - fits my life situation the way it fits interracial love. Dx
