  1. Really Sad news, will agree with all that's been said and then some. Used to see him at the Mecca and at VaVa's with Kegsy. Last saw Andy a couple of years ago at one of the Leeds Central All dayers. R.I.P. Andy.
  2. Good to hear that Chalky, especially if it continues after lockdown. Personally i dont do nighters anymore, fast approaching the big 70. Regards Fred Ward.
  3. come on, When did any promotors work together. It never happened and It never will. Too full of their own importance not willing to talk to rival promotors. But I suppose its a human thing. When two allnighters are in close proximity then the soulies have a choice which nighter to go to and usually splits the numbers and doesnt do any venue any good.
  4. 13/1/2020??????????
  5. Keith Mr "Kingspinner" Really Sad to hear of Keith passing. An inspiration to us all and played a big part in the Soul Scene. Condolences go out to Keiths Family R.I.P. Keith Fred & Jacque Ward.
  6. Very Sad to hear,Dave has been on the scene for many years a true friend always had time to speak.he will be always in our hearts.Condolences to Dave's family R.I.P. Dave. Jacque & Fred Ward
  7. In these times of lockdown it's really nice to hear stories taking us back to our youth. It's exactly what we need, great to read all the stories of the clubs and what we used to get up to ,the characters on the scene and times that touched us individually and that you will hear a soul sound somewhere that will trigger the old memory cells and in an instant you will be teleported back in time and on your way to a nighter,Maybe the Torch, Blackpool Mecca, The Pendulum in Manchester and of course many more .Those moments are priceless. God bless all those who are no longer with us and those that are. I am one of the lucky ones still here to tell the stories of the people the clubs the Dj's and still love to meet up in Whitelocks before the Leeds Central reunion Alldayers and the banter we all have. Still get excited getting the sounds sorted and catching the train to Leeds. Regards Fred Ward.

yes I remember him well! I forget his girlfriend's name and recognise you from your photo. Me and my Brother Rob(r.i.p) used to go to Wakefield Tiff's(Mecca) remember The Dance team well. I think Ian Gourley has a bar or had a bar in Ibiza or Menorca called tin Pan alley. Last saw him at the Metrodome when he flew over for his Dad's funeral quite a few years ago Good times Regards Fred Ward.

    Tami Lynn R.I.P

I'm gonna run away from you was championed by the Northern soul Scene at the time in particular the Wheel crowd. This is how the record got into the charts and resulting in Tami appearing on BBC's Top Of The Pops. R.I.P. Tami. Fred Ward.
  10. Very sad News, Tony was a legend and truly inspirational. R.I.P. Fred Ward.
  11. OMG Very sad to hear this news. Geno was a really good friend of my late brother Rob Ward R.I.P. and used to see him at the Cleethorpes pier/Winter gardens All nighters. I also new him,he was ever so polite and humble. Always was happy to be able to walk with us on the same side of the street. At the time was not allowed in South Africa. He used to tell us his Dad ran a Cane furniture busines called Mmanto Shikane and exported cane furniture all over the world.. Geno came over to the UK to have a good education. Loved Northern Soul and was a really good dancer as it was in his blood. R.I.P. Geno.
  12. The four vandals:- The wrong Side of town was tailored by Ian Levine and yes it was controversial. Liked by some and not liked by others.Personally I think it's a good Soul Sound. If you think it is good, you need to listen to the record by The Four Vandals :- A big Strong Love in my heart this is a brilliant sound and by far better than the wrong side of town. Regards Fred.
  13. I would have thought that a well seasoned "Soulie" would have various dance steps/styles to suit all types of Soul music be it slow-mid tempo or up tempo. There are however some Motown records that we always considered to be commercial music, like 3rd finger left hand by Martha & the Vandellas which we wouldn't dance to. On the flipside a Motown record again by Martha & the Vandellas record Heatwave we found it impossible to sit down to! Another example is needle in a haystack by the Velvelettes that we wouldn't dance too as we again found it too commercial, too mainstream andmaybe not underground soul.Yes there were Motown Sounds that appealed to mainstream audiences and ones that appealed to us "Soulies"yet still under the Motown label. Another Northern Soul record is Al Wilson's the Snake, recognised by the general listener as Every Northern "Soulies" dream record when in fact it was quite the opposite. Regards Fred.
  14. Maybe its a case of don't double deck and when one dj has finished his/her spot lock the record box. Then the next dj unlocks their box and can't put 30 records by accident into their box. I dont understand how a dj would have space in their record box to fit 30 records i would have thought they would be quite full given that you dont want your records loose, flying about in transit. Using a small record box like they were back in the day is a big risk as its very easy to be picked up. You need an aluminium box that holds 200 to 300 thats quite heavy so difficult to carry off and if it happens hopefully wont get too far. Just keep an eye on your trolley as well! Regards Fred.
  15. Leeds Central Soul Club always on top.Playing the sounds we all grew up with and love. All set in the original building, with the original Dj's creating that "Central" only atmosphere that hits you as you descend down the stairs. Northern Soul & Motown at its finest. Looking forward to seeing you all on Sunday. Regards Fred.
  16. Just read this, really sad news. Tom a dear friend over the years on the scene and a character. Used to see Tom all over the scene and always had time to speak to you. R I P Tom. Jacque & Fred Ward.
  17. Really sad to hear this news. Takes me back to the days of the Twisted Wheel Whitworth street Manchester, The Hifi ClubTrinity street in Huddersfield where my brother Rob(R.I.P.) and I used to walk up to the Hifi and there was this West Indian guy who lived just down the road used to have his upstairs window open and would be playing good soul sounds. The one that caught our attention was this record Barefootin'.His name was Seamore Burke who we got quite friendly with. A really nice guy and one day he said to me I want you to have this record which was Barefootin'/ let's go baby where the the action is. Wherever I Dj I always have this sound with me and play it regularly at the Central. A class soul sound. R.I.P. Robert.
  18. Just read the news. One of my all time fav artists. Her music will always be with us. R.I.P. Lorraine. Fred Ward.
  19. Hi Julian, yes we are well, and trust you and Carolyn are too. Good news that Johns still with us! Didn't he get the nickname "batman" as he used to wear a cape or just wear his raincoat like one with his top button fastened with his arms inside? .We can't make it to Barnoldswick as with now three grandchildren are doing a spot of babysitting. Hopefully we'll see you both in the coming year. All the best.
  20. I also Remember John Bollen aka (Batman) from Lord Jims, he used to keep us entertained in the queue outside Lord Jims and wasn't he the John Bollen who was on Ian Levine's "The Strange World Of Northern Soul"?. Regards Fred.
  21. By a mile it has to be 1st George Carrow because like already said its the first to be spun at various venues across the country and it's the best version.2nd Darrell Bank"s take on it. Then the others don't come anywhere near. I.M.O. Regards Fred.
  22. My old mate Martyn, Used to knock about with him quite a lot. Martyn passed away 18/9/2002.Much too early. He used to go out with Liz from Huddersfield for a time.He was one of the largest characters on the scene.Talk about a Dj when he was on at the Torch his words would all flow into one but he was up there with the best i.m.o.He Once Dj'd for me at the Frobisher suite and turned up with bits of toilet roll stuck all over his face as he'd cut himself shaving. Seriously though he's sadly missed and have many memories of him in many places. Always a pleasure to be in his company Regards Fred.
  23. Really Saddened to hear of Theresa's passing.I'll always remember the record I'll bet you, first heard it at Tiffany's (Wakefield Mecca) in the Bali Hai spun by the one and only Mr Soul himself Tony Banks. R.I.P. Theresa.
  24. The Brickyard in mexborough that counjers up memories our kid (Rob Ward ) R.I.P. used to go across with The Dj John Simms and a few other lads from Huddersfield. Lou Johnsons unsatisfied always flashes me back to The Pendulum in Manchester.R.I.P. Lou.
