  1. Originally this classic when surfaced was on white demo format. No issues surfaced. A red boot surfaced in the mid 70’s. Then in around 1980/1981 it appeared on John Anderson’s list for £6. Suspicions arose at the time as some strange things had been happening with records on Castle and Arctic to name a couple. Eventually after a week or two the dust settled and the pink issues started appearing in sales boxes everywhere for a year or two you could pick it up for between £5 and £8. Turned out a ‘mother lode (100’s)’ of the ‘mythical issue’ had been unearthed. This would explain the scarcity of shows on popsike, as the pink issues are extremely rare in the wild, in short, the issues never got issued. A couple of other obscure boot attempts are also out there including a one-sided thing. Someone on here may have the old soulbowl list from that time. Mind you, it was at a time when Johns list had things like Edward Hamilton (Baby Weep) for £6, Marie Knight £6, New Wanders £4, Carol Anderson £3, Will Colin’s £3.

  3. It was always going to happen Paul, the scene has become far too big globally and over the past decade a big change has been happening, northern soul (in it's many sub genre forms) has transcended from being a music of the past to become a current genre, with new and old releases now starting to blend together into what I believe will lead to exciting and creative times ahead. Whether Motown ever get their act together again is anybody's guess Answer to questions; How many touring Northern Soul bands are there to warrant such a statement of authenticity and what makes them authentic and great? Many are out there. They will all claim to be authentic and great and many of them are definitely great performers, but in my opinion they are authentic only if they are recording and releasing new material or are the original artists. Do the scenes original (or other) scene goers attend this stuff? You bet they do, and why not it's fun and introduces many people to this wonderful music and global scene that is 'Northern Soul'. My only comment is, I hope the live events stays fresh and don't give over entirely to purely tribute bands playing endless oldies and Do I Love over and over again.
  4. Many years ago, would have been around 1980, I had a Fairmount for some time. cost around £35 at Wigan. Few months later I bought the Rouser copy from Johnathan W at a Notts Palais all-dayer. I remember the Rouser copy being distinctly different in its fidelity and mix, claps and breaks are a give away. For me the Fairmount had a brighter, looser sound whilst the Rouser was a tad more polished. I personally think this may be the same take, with a different mix.
  5. The twists and turns of labels and releases is truly fascinating, never fails to amaze me how some tracks see releases on obscure foreign labels, without a sniff of a release in the US. Back to Quakertown, there was definitely a buoyant emergent scene happening in the DC, Virginia and the Carolinas around that time, which was a little faster and bouncy in tempo. Anyone know how the other Rouser releases tie in?
  6. It’s a nice thing that Rondo track. Lucky You!
  7. It was a Southerner who caused the confussion/identity illusion crisis, when he came up with the word 'Northern'. Because the venues in the north played soul that was obscure, mostly uncharted and honest instrumentation (no electronics or synths). In the south it tended to be monotenous early disco dross. DJs like Levine, Curtis etc (Mecca), then followed by Sam, Searling and others starting to play obscure disco dross often at the exclusion of 60's mainly because of its relative availability (cheap as chips at the time) and appeal to the mass commercial disco going (and radio listening) crowds in the major cities and London.
  8. It's another Burnley record from 15+ years back, we originally covered-up as Bernie Williams came from John Anderson in late 90's.
