Sad News Freddie Scott RIP

Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1933, he moved to New York as a child where he sang in his grandmother's gospel choir and even recorded some tracks as a solo singer before entering college with the intentions of becoming a doctor. By the '60s though, Freddie had given up medical school to work as a songwriter in the city's famed Brill Building. Among his compositions were Paul Anka's "It Only Lasts For A Little While" and Gene Chandler's "From Day To Day".

In 1963, Freddie Scott cut a demonstration record of "Hey Girl", a new song by Gerry Goffin and Carole King. The intended recipient was the hit-making Chuck Jackson, but he turned the song down. Instead, Goffin and King liked Scott's voice so much that they recorded their own version with him. Phil Spector heard the results and said, "You've got to put that out. It's a smash." "Hey Girl" was a Top Ten US hit and became a club favourite in the UK, being covered by several beat groups of the time.

Kettering Corn Market Hall April 21st

Hello fellow soulies.
The Corn market hall kicked off at 7.30 on Saturday the 21st of April with Steve Towers playing a subtle mix of old and new.
After a quiet start the place began to fill up a bit, but there were a lot of faces missing. We clashed with an annual commemorative do in Market Harborough which was a bit of a shame. And it looks like we’ve done it again in June and clashed with Rugby, (sorry to Karl and other organisers). Though numbers were down (even Bob Barr didn’t turn up) we still had a brilliant night, trying out a young local DJ, Sean, who when he’s not DJ’ing is a nurse at Kettering General. He played some really underplayed stuff and his spot was (in my humble opinion) inspired!
If you liked Sean you can catch him playing a sixties spot in the Prince of Wales most Thursdays. Trev played his usual mix of modern, R&B and underplayed oldies along with a few youth club toons. His spot included a duet from Frank Wilson and Chris Clarke which I bet most of you have not heard before!
June 2nd is the next date for your diary. We have managed to book our legendary friend Soul Sam! Ever popular Sam will be spinning a mix of old and new and we may be selling tickets to prevent the night being oversubscribed.
We will keep you posted on this.
Soul in the Park tickets and details will be available in June at £8 each (what a bargain). In the meantime, please pass this newsletter on to anyone you think may be interested.
Tara for now,
Trev, Steve and Lynn

David Sea - A new 45 release out now from Shotgun records!

News and press release of a fresh new release on the Shotgun Label
PRESS RELEASE
May 2007
SELECTA RECORDS LTD have established a new label called Shotgun to focus on ‘classic soul’ product.

The initial release “Believe In Me” / “Let’s Just Get Together” by soul star David Sea (SHOT 101) is available on 7” single from May 14th.
“Believe In Me”

“Let’s Just Get Together”

Both tracks were written and produced by Jerry Weaver (now deceased) and were recorded in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1971.
David Sea is best known as a member of The Temptations but he also has a strong international following as a solo artist.
It is often noted that David sounds similar to Teddy Pendergrass but on these early tracks he comes across more like Bobby Womack.

Much of the product on Shotgun will be previously unissued tracks from the golden era of soul music. Also scheduled for UK release are vintage recordings by Sam Dees and Rozetta Johnson.
Shotgun is distributed by Selecta Records which was formed to provide an outlet for contemporary soul music. The Selecta label was launched in January 2007 with singles by Sheba Potts-Wright and Bobby Hutton and is currently successful with its new single by Simone De.
P&R and business affairs for Selecta and Shotgun are handled by music publisher Paul Mooney who is managing director of Millbrand Music.
For seven years he acted as production manager and A&R consultant to Grapevine Music Group. Prior to that he ran the Ardent, Zing and Forever labels and negotiated major recording and publishing deals with Polydor records and PolyGram Music for the double-platinum selling pop group Lighthouse Family.

Available from Soul Supermarket Crazy Beat, Soul Brother, Beatin' Rhythm, John Manship, Record Corner, Funky Feet etc etc

More soul on the radio - www.lifefm.org.uk

I've recently started broadcasting on 103.6fm in NW London on a Wednesday night from 10.00pm - 12midnight with the Vinyl Vault on Life FM. General soul, mod jazz, ska and other odds and ends is mixed with events news and occasional guests (6 June DJ Cello returns for more fierce ska and rocksteady). Also available on www.lifefm.org.uk - the show crashed online last week because too many people were trying to access it at the same time so the station is increasing bandwidth soon to help with this scenario. Hopefully all will be well this Wednesday night. If you do get a chance to listen I'd welcome feedback at the address below - it's not perfect yet but improving weekly I hope. Well done to everyone who's secured space for real soul music on the airwaves and thank you if you take the time to tune in. Best, Martin Gavin scotchmartin@lifefm.org.uk

The Apollas - H B Barnum Weekender Stars, 6ts Northern & modern weekender 8-10th June

Hot news from the 6TS nerve centre.

Unfortunately due to illness Kell Osborne isn't well enough to travel. However we have the stunning girl soul group The Apollas as replacements and they will be regaling us with the stomping sounds of You're Absolutely Right, Sorry Mama, Just Can't Get Enough and the Northern classic Mr Creator.

HB Barnum needs no introduction and we are very fortunate to get a musician of his calibre to come over and give a very rare live vocal performance when he is so busy working with Aretha and many other world famous singers. He will be singing his Northern hits It Hurts Too Much To Cry, Heartbreaker, Three Rooms With Running Water, his modern soul classics If You Want A Love Affair, All Alone By The Telephone and has promised more surprises, which if you remember his sensational performance at the Great Yarmouth TAC weekender twenty years ago, should be quite something.

Weekend passes are still available www.6ts.info for details.

Hitsville Soul Club hit Pittsburgh for the "NeverSouledOut" Allnighter on Sat 12 May

The travelling soulies of The Hitsville Soul Club hit Pittsburgh for the "NeverSouledOut" Allnighter on Sat 12 May...here's what we got up to..

Mark Holmes and I touched down at Pittsburgh International around 5pm and after a nightmare traffic journey arrived at the hotel a couple of hours later. Quick shower and visit to Red Lobster later and we were en-route to The Gallery - the venue for the Friday night party laid on by Justin (The Promoter) and The Vintage Scooter Club. Des Parker, Johnny Beggs and Karl Heard (Over from UK), were already nestled next to the bar and the music was being provided by our host and local guys from the Scooter Club. Lots of boogaloo, instrumentals and latin influenced stuff came from the turntables as we settled in. By 10pm Russ Vickers, up from Virginia and Jason Thornton (Up from Florida), arrived and we were treated to Jason spinning some great classic Northern for the last hour before we left at midnight when they closed up. Highlight of the evening was when Dave Brown (Philly Archives), came in with Mr Bobby Fulton. (Soulville and Jay Walking Records). Had a great half hour with the Reverend Fulton and we all managed to get him to sign copies of the double album vinyl set that was produced in 2001. Have to say that the package of this two album set is really outstanding. Liner notes, pictures, good quality vinyl...it's all there and every collector should have one filed away. The UK guys set off for Ohio, (Record Show), whilst the rest of us retired to the hotel where the Numark was set up and records were played, beer drunk until around 6am. We'd made a good start to the weekend!

http://www.soul-sour...-1179214856.jpg

All freshened up by 9am, breakfast finished less than an hour later and it was off to our first stop of the day. Attic Records. Attic is owned by Fred Bohn, a well respected (on both sides of the pond), "record guy". Fred's a major collector himself and provides many scans of the earlier 45s that support the features we present in There's That Beat! Fred's store is a pleasure to visit. He's used to the Brits coming in browsing and makes you feel at home. No rush here, just lots of vinyl and a welcoming host. A search of his shelves saw him relieve me of some cash in exchange for mint Jackie Wilson - "You Brought About A Change In Me b/w For Once In My Life" - Brunswick 55392 Demo which allowed me to upgrade my "battered copy" and a Shirelles - "Too Much Of A Good Thing b/w Bright Shiny Colors" - Scepter 12192 Demo in the same condition, which advances my cause to complete their catalogue on Demos. We all bought 45s, took a few pictures of some of the artists pictures Fred has, and reflected on a morning well spent as we headed off to lunch. For anyone on a vinyl hunting trip, a stop at Fred Bohn's Attic Records is a must . Tell him we sentya!

Not too far from Fred's place is "The Strip", an area of shops, restaurants and general hustle and bustle. Lots of old style shops, vendors trying to entice you and restaurant owners looking to snare customers. We settled on an Italian Bistro with outside seating and an owner who guaranteed us he had "everything". Unfortunately, my request for the only thing I miss about the "old country" except the mighty Burnley Football Club, meat pie, chips, mushy peas and gravy drew nothing but a blank stare and a scratch of his head! We settled for some Italian nosh and watched the world go by for a while before saying our "Ciaos" to the proprietor and his missus who were good eggs and setting off for the afternoon session.

Jerry's Record Store is another of Pittsburgh's old school vinyl stops. No gimmicks or anything here either, it's cash/cheque only and once again, the staff here are friendly, knowledgeable and as vinyl crazy as any of their customers. The layout of the store is such that all the soul 45s are filed together in well kept boxes at the bottom end of the shop right next to the turntable. So basically, you can pull 'em straight off the shelf and straight onto the deck. Perfect!

Jerry has three types of pricing, boxes of $3.00, boxes of $5.00 records and then he has boxes of individually priced 45s that are not on the display shelves, so if you wanna see the best stuff, you'll need to ask. But hey...soul 45s at 3 bucks apiece! The four of us set about sifting the boxes of little black jewels and it took us about 4 hours to get through the lot. I had a great time at Jerry's. I always pine for the days when pallets of 45s were available to just sit around flicking through but where I live, most of the real deal 45 stores are long gone, replaced by the usual HMV/Virgin stores full of overpriced T Shirts and sanitized CD shelves, so sitting around sorting through 1000s of 45s with a group of like minded mates is a real treat for me nowadays. Russ was even merrily puffing away on his cigarette while digging through the boxes. Now that's a real blast from the past!

Once again everyone found something to separate them from their cash: Russ took a punt on a rather nice looking Jimmy Burns Tip Top Demo of You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone, Jas picked up Kenny Hamber 9Can't remember the title - Modern/Crossover thingy) , Mark has recently started collecting again and picked up quite a few that replaced stuff he sold before leaving UK over 20 years ago and I managed to find some bits and bobs as you can see from the pics on these pages.(TTB! - ISSUE #4). Couple of vinyl highlights for me were: Keanya Collins - "It Ain't No Secret b/w I'll Get Over It" - Blue Rock 4072. I have to admit, I'd never heard the flip to this 45 before. "I'll Get Over It" would seem ripe for today's UK dance-floors, a real quality melody with vibraphone induced backing and Keanya doing what she does best. This may have been played before Im not sure, if it was I must have been at the bar, but some enterprising D J needs to dig it out and give it an airing. The other one of note for me was The Controllers - "Feeling A Feeling b/w Somebody's Gotta Win" - Juana 3414. I have to admit, 70s records have trouble finding their way back to my boxes unless they're a bit special. This one pushed all the right aural buttons to end up in my boxes marked J. From 1972, it's another record I hadn't heard before this weekend, but will be listening to from now on and for a total of 3 bucks... dontcha just love it when that happens!

As Jerry's was closing we made our way back to the hotel, dived in the shower (not together I hasten to add), grabbed a bite to eat at a local hostelry and proceeded to the main event of the weekend. The NeverSouldOut Allnighter.

The event was held in what can only be described as a derelict old stone former church. It was dark, dank, dusty and had a large open space where decks had been set up and a large space to dance in...PERFECT! As we arrived the speakers were blaring out favorites of the local mods and scooter guys, lots of Boogaloo, Instrumentals and a hint of Latin stuff. Much the same as the previous night. We set up the There's That Beat mags, T shirts and started in on the beer that was provided in the cost of the $10.00 admission! Yeeehaw!

The DJ rosta was sliced into 30 minute sets and it wasn't long before the Northern started to get played. Karl Heard over from UK played an uptempo set, followed by Dave Brown who's set consisted of many Latin fused records and then Jason played his first of two sets before the resident locals hit the decks again. The crowd seemed up for it and people were on the floor throughout the night. For our UK readers, it's a totally different experience at a soul venue here in the States. The crowds are primarily out for a good social night similar to a regular nightclub in UK. Dancing with your chick /wife and drinking on dancefloors etc is the norm here and the young mods of Pittsburgh were determined to have a good night of it! The local DJs did their thing and the crowd responded accordingly. More Boogaloo, Latin, Instrumentals followed and everyone had a great time. Next up came the sets from the purely Northern DJs. Karl, Jason, Des all played great sets of classic Northern soul. Mainly uptempo stuff as that's what the crowd seemed to want and a highlight for me was seeing young US fans throwing themselves around to Robby Lawson - Burning Sensation - Kyser.

We decided around 3am to call it a night. We'd had hardly any sleep for two nights, and had journeys back the next morning. Was good to see the floor still busy as we left, along with a couple of Pittsburgh's finest keeping an eye on the proceedings with a smile on their face.

Big Thanks to Justin and The Vintage Scooter Club for their hospitality, we had a great weekend. If any of them come down to The Hitsville Rare Soul Weekender in September we'll certainly return the favour.
Regards,
Dave

Just a few lines to look back at the first "Different Kettle Of Fish" Soul night at the Dog In A Doublet pub Whittlesey nr Peterborough.

If you've read the events section of Soul Source you'll soon realise that Peterborough has it's fair share of various soul nights, the lads behind the DKOF wanted something a little different, the more obscure sounds, the underplayed sounds, they wanted a night to compliment the existing soul nights in Peterborough.

Sylvia's funeral will be held at Tynemouth Crematorium, Walton Ave, North Shields, Tyne and Wear at 2.30 pm on Friday 27th April. The families would love to see anyone who wishes to attend. As per her expressed wishes, her ashes will be scattered at a later date from St. Mary's Lighthouse, a place she loved to visit throughout her life, which is situated a couple of miles further up the coast. There will be a memorial function held after the service at the Rex Hotel, The Promenade, Whitley Bay NE26 2RL, where we will reminisce and celebrate Sylvia's life through soul music. A brief history of Sylvia's life on the soul scene has been posted and a book of condolence has been opened at www.6ts.info The funeral information on there at the moment is inaccurate and will be corrected shortly. Thank you for your very kind and thoughtful messages posted there and on here, it has been a source of great support for the families.

Keeping The Faith 40 Years of Northern Soul A 4 CD Box Set : Review by Rachel Apr 2007

Keeping The Faith, 40 Years of Northern Soul (Sanctuary)
If someone asked you to do a compilation of Northern Soul, it'd be hard to know where to start. What to include - do you concentrate on the sort of tunes that the scene was founded on, or the ones that you'd hear out and about today? Keeping The Faith is a new CD box set from Sanctuary celebrating forty years of the Northern Soul scene, which has answered that question with a solid base of the former topped with a sprinkling of the latter.
I'll admit to wondering if there was really any need for yet another 'best of', but this one does it very well. The first thing that strikes you about the set is the fantastic presentation - a sturdy cardboard case in 'dancefloor' wood finish, record-style CDs, and a 58-page booklet packed full of history, quotes, interviews, and vibrant images of artists, dancers and record labels.

CD1 kicks off the set with a bunch of solid standards such as Sandi Sheldon - You're Gonna Make Me Love You, The Fascinations - Girls Are Out To Get You, The Formations - At The Top Of The Stairs, Major Lance - The Beat, and JJ Barnes - Our Love Is In The Pocket. If you've got a few compilations you probably already have most of these tracks, and like me, may well skip through quite a few, but they have their place in the history of the scene and so in this retrospective. In an unexpected change of tack, this CD finishes with the once controversial but now classic Carstairs, followed by the sweet swaying midtempo of New Sound - Don't Take Your Love From Me, and Beverley Hills - I Don't Care Anymore.

CD 2 brings us a healthy dose of girly tracks - Rose Batiste, Rita & the Tiaras, Gwen Owens, Dena Barnes and Marie Knight. Added to these are the clap-along classic Ever Again by Bernie Williams, the moody Paris Blues by Tony Middleton, the haunting Do You Love Me by the Masqueraders and recently popular dancefloor shuffler Continental Four - The Way I Love You.

CD3 has the emphasis firmly on the male side with such greats as Jock Mitchell, Jack Montgomery, Johnny Bragg and Edwin Starr. For me, the stand out track is the Jamaican Glenn Miller - Where Is The Love, which epitomises the Northern scene's ability to pick out tracks from anywhere and make them its own.

I found the fourth CD the most interesting in terms of track choice. It's good to see the latest 100 Club anniversary single - the previously unreleased Gigi & the Charmaines - I Don't Want To Lose Him - making an appearance, recognising the influence of this major club (it's a shame there's no mention of it in the accompanying booklet though). There's Crow - Your Autumn Of Tomorrow, a definite love it or hate it Northern oddity. There's the fabulous midtempo girliness of Ketty Lester - Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid, and the deep voiced despair of Roy Hamilton with Earthquake. There's a nod to the Crossover side of things with Chuck Cockerham - Have I Got The Right and the very lovely Voices by Willie Feaster. Also worthy of a mention is the beautiful bittersweetness of the Tangeers' Let My Heart And Soul Be Free.

From a personal point of view, it would have been nice to see a little more of a nod towards the present day, both in musical and written content (e.g as already mentioned re the 100 Club). But with today's scene being such a complex and disparate one, it would probably take considerably more CDs to cover all its angles and genres. And really, it seems right that the scene is still ahead of the compilers; that there are records which you have to go out to hear testifies to the spirit of discovery described by Colin Curtis in his interview in the booklet - "the buzz to play and turn people on to new tunes and new ideas."

Overall, as an introduction to Northern, or as a collection of memories, this box set certainly does what it says on the, er, box. The final track, Bobby Womack - So Many Sides Of You, seems to be well chosen - the scene has many aspects, and this compilation at least touches on most of them.
available at all major stockists at approx price range of £25.00 - £29.00

The Midlands and more on the Modern side

The Midlands and more............on the Modern side

Hi all.............just found out that my last piece for On The Scene was not used due to printing problems. It's a little out of date now, but it's a shame for it not to get read after putting the effort in, so here goes:

Firstly, let me wish you all a belated Happy New Year via these pages. I hope you all enjoyed the festive season, and that you managed large doses of soul in amongst all that over-indulging and family stuff. Anyway, it's back to it now, and though the new releases are traditionally thin on the ground at this time of year, there's plenty to cover gig wise as we set our sights firmly on Prestatyn in mid-March. More on that later.

I did say last time out that I expected to turn in a great report on the Without Boundaries 6th Anniversary down at The Coors Visitor Centre in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire. Well, around 200 souls turned out to work off the turkey at what must rank as one of our best sessions yet. Across two rooms the music was top notch, with all DJ's performing at the very top of their game. As I've previously mentioned, from now on we welcome Steve Guarnori as a resident DJ in the 70's/crossover room. So, on the back of the Christmas success, the sensible amongst you will make a note in your diaries that our next event takes place over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. DJ's on the day include Butch, Colin Curtis, Jamie Taylor, Tats Taylor and Rick Scott alongside residents Colin Brown, Steve Guarnori, Fish and Mark Randle. And, you get the added bonus of a live performance by MOBO Gospel Award Winners NU LIFE. Oh, how we look after you. See listings in this very organ as April approaches.

Continuing with our look back at the Christmas action, and three days after Without Boundaries the Soul Purpose Christmas/New Year party took place, and a huge success it was too. Loads of folk took advantage of the cheap stay-over, including loads of the Sheffield crowd from Soul Intent. Big shout to you guys, who kept the night porter busy with the drinks runs well after the music stopped!! Anyway, they loved it and vowed to return next time. A massive thanks to Fish for turning in a great spot on guest duties; very well received. It just remains for me to tell you to note that our next session takes place on Friday April 20th with guest DJ, Bolton main man, Bob Hinsley. As always, Sam Evans, Mark Goddard and Mark Randle will be in support. As usual, more info can be had on 07710 283281, at info@soul-purpose.net or see www.soul-purpose.net.

Look out for a new all-nighter promoted by Alan Johnson and co. to replace the Burslem sessions, which came to an abrupt end toward the close of 2006. The new venue is Uttoxeter Race Course, and I'm reliably informed by an independent source that this is a bostin' venue. I'll be amongst the DJ's at the first one, which unfortunately will have happened by the time you lot read this. Again, keep an eye on those listings over the coming months for future dates.

Continuing with the good news and no sooner do I report the bad news about the loss of the Aston Villa venue for Dave Thorley's Soul Shakers International event, and the man himself informs me that he's found a replacement. Yes, Soul Shakers returns in early March at Solihull Football Club, Damson Parkway, Birmingham. Lots of good words said about the first event at Villa, mainly around the music policy, and of course that won't change at the new venue. So, my advice is to get along and make this night a success. DJ's on the first night at the new home will be Soul Sam, Arthur Fenn, Marc Forrest (Berlin), Meg Wilshire, Ady Pountain, Ali & John Nightingale, Gavin Page, Steve Lloyd and of course Dave & Malayka. Again, see the gig listings for full details. Don't miss it!

The Soul Intent Crew has been forced to relocate their fantastic event from the Red Lion in Todwick over to the Prince of Wales at Renishaw. So, unbeknown to me at the time, my guest spot in December was the last at the old venue. Anyway, I went to the first event at the Prince in January, and I have to say that whilst I thought the Red Lion was a super venue, the Prince of Wales is even better. There's more dance floor area, its better laid out for those that want to escape the music for a chat but without mobbing the bar, and it's a no smoking venue with a foyer for those that do want a crafty drag. Perhaps surprisingly, nobody seemed at odds with the latter, which bodes well for those promoters concerned about attendances when the smoking ban comes into effect later this year. Anyway, add to all this a later finish time of 1 a.m., which should serve to attract more travellers, and I think you have a recipe for success. I'm made up as it's a junction nearer for me, being M1 J30!

Finally gig wise, and it will be upon us before you know it, is the Midnight Hour Weekender. Yes, mid-March all roads lead to the North Wales coast for one of the largest gatherings of the year; some 3000+ souls joining together at the Pontins centre in Prestatyn. With Meli'sa Morgan set to appear on the Friday night, and surprise guests on the Modern front to be revealed nearer the time, it's sure to be an unmissable event. The gig is totally sold out, with the ubiquitous waiting list currently in operation, so get on the blower, you never know your luck. Call 08706 045606 for last minute opportunities. I'll be there on the Thursday night pacing myself again..............not!!

Before we get into the tunes, I did promise last time that I'd mention my visit to the NIA in Birmingham to see John Legend on the Wednesday before Christmas. Despite John keeping us waiting an age between the support-act (Robin Thicke.......what an unfortunate name!) and his appearance, he turned in a super show encompassing material from each of his Columbia albums. Around 15 songs performed to an appreciative audience by the latest soul superstar on the block. Catch him next time round if you can; definitely worth it.

To the music then, and I'll start with something I've only just picked up, but that caused a stir at year end on the nations dance floors. From Germany comes the set "Soulprint" by Karl Frierson. You need to head straight for "Ten Minutes", a superior soul dancer that everyone will want in their collection. Another appearing to me late 2006 was Steven Perrilloux, whose "Only You" set contains the ace mid-tempo "Do The Right Thing". The new set from Spur Of The Moment "Urban Renewal" contains another great dance floor winner in "We Can Get Together", though I'm not sure how much exposure this will get, as it's a little tricky to find, with my copy coming from their website at www.spurofthemoment.com.

We usually take a trip to the land of the rising sun, by way of reviewing the latest releases from Japan. Perhaps the biggest thing of the moment is the Shuya Okino CD "United Legends", which is chock full of good stuff, most notable cuts being "Summer Love" from Nicky Guiland and "Beautiful Sadness" from Carleen Anderson. My particular favourite is ""If It Is Love"" featuring the vocals of Clara Hill. Don't miss this CD. Having said that, the vinyl maniacs amongst you may want to hang fire, as Especial records has just released "United Legends EP 1" with the aforementioned Clara Hill and Carleen Anderson cuts included amongst others. I have a sneaky feeling that the whole CD may see a release across 2 or 3 twelves. The Nicky Guiland cut on vinyl............hmmmm.....there's a thought! The DJ Kawasaki CD that we mentioned last time has been followed up with the release of a remix package "Beautiful Too", worthy of your investigation if your bank manager allows it. On Japanese vinyl out of the New World Records stable is the latest offering from the Studio Apartment, and the great, "The Rising Sun" featuring none other than Blaze. Keeping the tempo up, but moving across to the USA, we have the latest on Generate Music from Deepswing & DJ Meme feat. Linda Jackson and "Lift Up (Your Soul, Your Spirit)". I must confess that this didn't quite hit the spot at first, but it's really got under my skin and I love it! Very uplifting, this might have some mileage on the UK modern scene owing to its Salsoul feel, a la Silvetti "Spring Rain".

If you like the southern soul sound, you could do worse than to check out the latest offering from Stan Mosley. A top album this, and if you missed out on Stan's first release(?), the "Standing Tall" EP on Butlers records from around 10 or so years ago, you'll be pleased to know that the three killer tracks from that EP are included here. Oh, "Steppin Out" is the title of the CD.

Finishing off with a look at some more vinyl, and the following are all worth checking out in my humble.............Terisa Griffin releases "Sunshine" in its Terry Hunter Club Mix form for Dopewax, Franck Roger returns on Real Tone out of France with the brilliant "All In The Way" featuring Zonkes. Check out the UK's very own Vanessa Haynes on "Morning Light", new for Irma out of Italy. And finally, Phuture Sole continues to deliver the goods with Kenny Carvajal & Lafayette on "A Higher Place".

Right, as is customary at the beginning of the New Year, and while the new releases are slow, I'll sign off by listing my favourite musical moments from 2006. A really good year for the music I think, though you may not agree if solid albums is what you look for. Lots of great album cuts and single releases, but few solid albums. Hasn't that always been the case though? Whatever, here are the lists, and what we have are ten CD soul cuts and ten up-tempo vinyl goodies. Don't forget you can catch me on Starpoint Radio (www.starpointradio.com) on the last Friday of each month. C ya next time!

Wellingborough - The Final Curtain

Now that was a proper soul night!
Here comes the rant...............
Why oh why does it have to be the last one to atract numbers like that? too many inferior soul nights ruining the scene for all, over crowding the place is all i can say, look at what a soul night can be like, not just 60 or 70 people in an empty hall scratching there arse's listening to half clued up DJ's, and promoters who go ahead with nights that clash for the sake of it! Any way now i've got that off me chest What can i say walked in about 8.30 Lisa's bag was bursting with back up beers and vodkas (thinking ahead ) it was a quick scurry to the bar while we could, loaded up with drinks met lenny, to which he gave Dave a 60's style mic with a name plaque (nice touch len ) And of course all the DJs were carrying the obligiotory blown up flyer in a frame.
Quick peek at the decks to check who was spinning Roger was blasting out some midtempo, the room was all ready half full people were eyeing up the dance floor with one or two gliding along the sides to rogers tunes, 9pm came and Bucky lit up the room with some tried and tested oldies and bang that started the floor off, its been a while since i've seen a full floor at 9-9.30 i can tell you, Mick kicked of the 9.30 - 10 spot with Chico Lamarr so that had me up, walked off to take a sip of me drink only to be dragged back on the floor by the, intro from the Fasinators (got to be in my top ten that) buy that time i had to go out side for a smoke (another thing put in buy the wanky managment) stood out by the door must have been 9.45ish and the manager was moaning at Len and Nina, "i know how many people are in because we know how many glass's we have out", of course i had to cough and shout tosser at the same time
From that point on it was a lock out, i know a few friends turned up late and couldn't get in. quick fag trip to the bar and get meself near the floor for Daves spot, started off with a few old 'welly' tunes Charade, Tammy Wayne, Marvellows ect, and then the words come that i was waiting for all night, this is Johhny James, boom i was rocking about the dance floor like a good un. thats when Daves spot really picked up for me, Mello souls C/up, Sounds four sounded great (told you it was a dance floor winner) Dave was ment to be on for 45mins and looked at me watch and it was 11 where was bucky? Finally he got to the decks, i was knackered from dancing so went to the smoking room for a fag and a chill, knocked a young girls wine out of her hand all over Bev, (sorry bev )
Dont think i caught any of Jons or Rogers second sets, sorry guys, the bar was too full so it was Lisas goodie bag to the rescue, Just as Mick was hitting the decks for his second spot, cant really remember much of what he played, know i danced too quite a few, fair bit of seventys in there, Ellipses, Lil Major Willy et all, night was nearly drawing to a close, i felt pissed as any thing must have been s*t ---- Lenny came on at 12.30 to finish the night of with some oldies, and current stuff two for me were Parisians and the Walter and the Ads c/up had me dancing about, new the lights would be on soon as the Welly anthem came out the speakers...........OOOOOhhhhh Stooooooorrrrrmy.
Soon as the lights come on it dawned on me thats that then an end of an era so to speak, my first soul night with me mucker Andy Horne who sadly was layed up on his back down in Chigwell, thought the poor old boy was gonna cry on the phone when he couldn't get up due to his back.
You can read others views and talk about the night in the lookback thread here

6 New Kent 45s Out Now - 3 on New Kent Select Label

News of 6 New Rare and Northern Soul 45 Releases from Mark Bicknell
I've had a bugger of a day at work getting ready for a busy Easter.....retail sucks, arrived home to a nice couple of packages from Ace/Kent in one i was delighted to find another batch of six Kent 45's, the other package contained the new Villa CD and Northern Monsters CD which are well worth a punt and deserve their very own mention on here which i might just do a little later.

The first three 45's are on the new 'Kent Select' logo nice Blue label design in a superb company bag, very classy and extra tasty, all three are stunning double headers and you really must get these now!!!!, this new logo is i think going to be releasing some of the superb unissued material which Ady has discovered in recent years and featured on many of his superb CD's

City 001 is the outstanding Tobi Lark - 'True True Love' B/W Little Ann - 'Sweep It Out In The Shed' which of course was originally recorded and issued by Tobi Lark on Topper records, both are stunning unissued tracks taken form the Kent CD "Dave Hamiltons Detroit Dancers Volume Three" Kent CDKEND 257, if you only buy one of these new 45's it has to be this one, Tobi lark is simply 'hit you full in the face' hard edged Detroit...awesome Ady.

City 002 - is the wonderful 'A Broken Heart Cries' from The Pretenders originally released on "A Carnival Of Soul Volume Two" Kent CDKEND 118 from Joe Evans wonderful Carnival set up from New York, flip this winner over and you will discover the beautiful John Edwards - 'How Can I Go On Without You' taken from John Edwards - "A Careful Man Kent CDKEND 127......Dynamite Ady.

City 003 - The Other Brothers - 'Nobody But Me' taken from "Serious Shades Of Soul For Collectors Only" Kent CDKEND 119 B/W Betty Swann - 'The Dance Is Over' taken from "The Soul Of Money Volume Two" CDKEND 267, i think you are getting the picture here of how good these releases are, two simply stunning sides, the Bettye Swann is just about as good as it gets for me and one i have featured on the show since the original CD came out a couple of years ago, i think it also featured on her solo recordings CD Kent also put out a bit back now, i'm sure this is just the start of some wonderful 45's in this 'Select' series.......ten out of ten Mr Croasdell.

I believe the above three 45's will be retailing at around ten pounds....bargain or what? and will be limited to a 500 pressing run so simply get in fast as these are gonna fly out, best check with Ady directly or contact www.acerecords.com

The next three are carrying on from the last batch of Kent 45 releases on the Red, White, Black and Grey logo again presented in a nice company bag the quality continues here with three yummy double headers so it's very much 'two for the price of one' with this little lot, i think these 45's retail around £5/6.00 but again you need to check with the gaffer on this.

Millie Jackson - 'A House For Sale' B/W Garland Green - 'Come Through Me' - Town 124 - two simply class acts.

Town 125 i think will out sell even the Tobi Lark 45 as here we have two awesome sides that have been on many wants lists in recent years and still pack those dance floors nationwide - Unique Blend - 'Yes I'm In Love' B/W ' Houston Outlaws - 'Ain't No Telling' crossover with ease, crossover to die for.........wonderful Mr Croasdell.

And Finally Town 126 is a double diamond 64 million dollar sure fired winner - Bobby Wisdom - 'Handwritting On The Wall' from 1966 originally issued on 'Out A Site' records which is as hard as rocking horse droppings to find and will cost you a small fortune or rather a big one...lol if you can find one that is? B/W Morris Chestnut - 'Too Darn Soulful' cut back in 1967 and can only be described as a Northern Anthem and i'm glad to say i still have my Amy promo tucked away in the collection.
Morris of course recently played live at the Prestatyn weekender performing this classic to over 3.000 happy people...Darn soulful just too darn i bet as i missed it.

These are must have legit, authentic re - issues, Ady and Kent do it by the book, the sound quality is first class, the records are well presented and will i'm sure be well recieved, i will be giving them a full preview and airing on the show in a couple of weeks which will be a pleasure to do....first class effort Mr Croasdell....what's next ????????? www.solarradio.com

Miss these 45's at your peril....Tobi Lark is a Godess.....tunnnnnnne!

Regards - Mark Bicknell.

A Reluctant Star - Mckinley Jackson Interview By Dave Thorley

Someone asked if I could put up the two interviews I did with him that got published in Manifesto, as this was a work in progress they got published a year apart.
So here's a chance to read right through. One of Detroit's and soul musics greatest arrangers/producers and horn player.
A Reluctant Star - McKinley Jackson-Pt 1
The following day I had arranged to meet up with McKinley Jackson and his life long manager Betty . I arrived at betty's house a little early, so look through some records in the basement; betty calls to tell me that he's at the front door. In walks this tall, slender man, with grey hair in a long ponytail. We sit around for a while chatting about people we both know and as he feels more at ease his own story starts to unfold. Very early on, I get the feeling that this is a sensitive, private man, that love's music, but not so much the lime light; something he confirms later. He was born and raised in inner-city Detroit, and so is a true Detroiter, unlike many of the key people in the music industry there during the 60's and 70's, who were migrant. School days were no great joy, as he was seen to be a little backward, his own words, by the teachers and other kids. All except for one, his music teacher at Jr High, Gordon Allen. 'Music saved my life'. His music teacher could see something others hadn't and encouraged him to take up the trombone. Within a few years he was skipping school to go over to Motown and Golden World studio's to play on sessions. Playing in the second on trombone or just banging on a tambourine he didn't care, and he was getting paid, $6 a session, a lot of money to a kid in Detroit in the mid sixties. The first ever session he sat in on was Smokey Robinson's, Oo Baby, Oo Baby, with Norman Whitfield directing the floor and Paul Riser on arrangements. He was a fast learner, and people around could see that he had natural rhythm. He used the time at Motown to develop his skills and never was worried that he got little in the way of credits for the work he did there. 'It was great, I got to work with some fabulous people and learnt so much'. This become a general theme, as we went on, he was less concerned about credits and fanfare, he just loved making music. The other thing that he appreciated was that he met there, the three guys that influenced him most over his career, Gene Page, H B Barnum and Paul Riser.
His talents were starting to get recognised around the city too, and he started to get requests to do arrangements on independent releases, one of the first being The Arabians on LeMans records. 'They had this great lead vocalist Edward Hamilton, now he could sing.' At the same time he started working round the clubs in the city sitting in with the house bands, Club 12, and the famous Phelps's Lounge. So by the tender age of 16 he was already full immersed in the music industry. During this time he was able to hone his craft with all the leading musicians of the day, James Jameson, Norman Whitfield, Ruby Robinson, Benny Benjamin, to name but a few. He also worked providing arrangements for many classic tunes to come out of the array interdependent studios around town. It was also about this time that he met his soon to be manager Betty Slater. They both spend a few minutes debating where this first meeting was, and settle on the Brown Bunny club. Betty then introduced him to Danny Woods and together they started to form the group, that would first be called the Peps and later the Politicians. Early line up's had Stanley Cleveland, Melvin Griffin, Chuck Boyd, Zak Slater and Charlie Hearndon in the group. Soon they became the house band at the Legendary 20 Grand Motel. The place, that if you were in Detroit you had to go to see all the latest acts and make those important contacts. This group then evolved under betty's influence into McKinley Jackson and the Politicians. 'I was never comfortable being up front, I'd much rather be in the back row play my instrument, or in the studio'. But even with his reluctance to being up front, the group formed into a powerful musical unit, backing all the major artists passing through town to do live performances in it's clubs. 'We had to learn to play most musical styles during this time as part of our role as a house band'. For one season the weekly sessions there even went on television, with McKinley open the show with a trombone solo and then the band backing the artist on the show.
Not long after this Holland, Dozier and Holland left Motown to set up Invictus records. As part of the deal they were under pressure to produce and release their first album, so brought in McKinley Jackson and the Politicians as their first signing. 'The problem was that the album was rushed and poorly promoted, all they (Holland, Dozier and Holland) we're interested in, was meeting their contractual obligation'. This album coursed a small stir on the R&B charts, but never gave them the fast start they had hoped for. For the next few years the group become the main stay at Invictus, playing on nearly everything that was released there. The line up also continued to change, as Danny Woods started to develop his solo career, as well as singing with Chairman of the Board, another group managed by Betty. But the group continued working round the city's clubs and were the group that open up on the first night at Mozambique Club. 'This was a much more black club than the others in town, the acts here we're much more cutting edge. Regulars we're Darrel Banks, Funkadelic, Emanuel Laskey and Cody Black as well as us'. The time at Invictus was relatively short lived. 'Things then started to fall apart there, everybody was off doing other things'. When the company finally closed its doors, he headed out for the west coast with Richard Popcorn Wylie and Lamont Dozier to ABC records.
By this stage of the conversation my time was running out as it was mid afternoon and I had a long drive down to my next meeting Nashville. But as we agreed to continue this conversation next time I was in town, he reflected on the Detroit years. He can now see that he has a lot to be proud of, and is much more at ease with his achievements. Even though he may not have received, fully the credit for the true contribution he made. For him the greatest moments, during this period in his life, we're working with Marvin Gaye and Dionne Warwick. I tell him that next time we meet I wanted to discuss his work on one of my favorite albums, Richard Popcorn Wylie's ESP, on ABC. He smiles, 'Yes that was a good album, wasn't it to my next meeting Nashville. But as we agreed to continue this conversation next time I was in town, he reflected on the Detroit years. But not only did he continue his great career out on the west coast, he also past his talents down to his next generation. Which when he told me came as a great surprise. His son is Proof, of the talented hip hop group D12.

A Reluctant Star - McKinley Jackson-Pt II
For those that didn't read the first article, here's a quick resume. McKinley is a native Detroiter, growing up on the streets not far from the famous offices of Motown's Hitsville USA. He had a natural ear for music and in particular rhythm, which was spotted early on by his music teacher at school Gordon Allen. He was one of the few people around at the time to give him much encouragement, persuading him to take up playing trombone. Soon, he was skipping out of school and going over to Ed Wingate's Golden World studio's and Motown's studio A to sit in on sessions. In the early days you could say that one of his mentors was Joe Hunter of the Funk Brothers who help him to get in on these early sessions. For each of these he would get $5, union rate. A lot of money for a young kid of fourteen/ fifteen.

Whilst at Motown in the first few years, he was able to watch and sometimes work with all the greats, Holland Brothers, Paul Riser, Popcorn Wylie, HB Barnum, Norman Whitfield; Gene Page the list goes on.
All though he fast became an indemand brass player, he was was never that comfortable be upfrount on stage, his was always most at home working in the studio. This said he was working constanly in different bands, including a spell in the Peps. This is where he met Danny Woods and manager to be Betty Slater. From this came the formation of McKinley Jackson and the Politicians, who soon became reconised as one of the hottest group around the city for thier muscianship, and when Holand, Dozier, Holland left Motown, they were the first artists to get signed to the fledgling Invictus label. McKinley, by this time he was spending more and more time in the studio, working as, house band for Invictus, and generally working on arrangements for HDH. Arrangements were fast becoming his forte, but others had spotted this early on. Edward Hamilton had asked him to do the arrangements on their Lemans release some years before. When everything finally fell apart at the record label, McKinley, Richard Popcorn Wylie and Lamont Dozier headed out to the west coast, signing to ABC/Dunhill under the production name of 3G (The three Gemini's) and this is where we pick up the story.
McKinley and i are sitting in his apartment in Detroit. Although trying to get the interview done is proving  a little difficult as he keeps getting phone calls from Eddie and Brian Holland, who he is working with on some arrangements. But also it is a joy to sit and watch him work, the phone goes, his wife Carol calls from the other room, 'it's Brian for you, McKinley' a conversation then starts about the tune and McKinley says 'Well I thought it could go some thing like this' at which point he lays the phone next to a small keyboard and palys a small passage of music. At this point the conversation gets excited, as both Brian and McKinley start to share ideas. The conversation then ends with him saying 'OK I'll keeping working on that'. He then turns back to me, with a big smile on his face and say's 'where were we, you know you making me think about things I haven't thought about in years'. I ask him about the ESP album he did with Popcorn. I tell him, that this is one of my personal favorites and with a little coaching he starts to reel of the track titles, a little like someone looking at a childhood family photo and bit by bit naming everyone in the picture. 'Going out to the west coast was so much fun and working on that project with my friend Popcorn, but you know I haven't seen that much of him since he left and came back to Detroit'. I tell him that I off to see Richard later and he asks if he can tag along. He also asks if I can let him have a cd with the album on, as he has hardly any of the music he worked on back then and in many cases hasn't heard since they were recorded.
We return to the days on the west coast, McKinley had a big culture shock when he first got out there. He had been very used to the Detroit way of arranging and producing, working on the floor of the studio, in the sessions. Making changes on the hoof as the session evolved and taking alot of input from the muscians, just one big ctreative melting pot. But at ABC, he say's 'things were much different, your job as producer, was to bring in all these different people who worked on contract, have everything prepared and work from the control room, more overseeing the process, than getting involved on the floor, other people you employed did that'. I ask did he feel this was a bad thing, 'No, just a different way of doing things, and it taught me about disaplin in the recording process'. 'So how did you come to work with Reggie Garner at ABC'. Reggie Garner, Reggie Garner' he say searching through his memory and looking somewhat distant at me. Then suddenly, he's back 'little Reggie, oh yes I remember him great voice. He came to me on contract, you see we would have are own artist and others that we we would work with as part of the house contract. At this point we talk about the very distinctive string arrangements, that by that time had become his signature. Something you can hear on the ESP album and Reggie Garner's, tracks 'Half a cup' and 'That ain't the way (You make love)'. He smiles, "we did do some good tunes back then didn't we".
We move on to the period after those hectic times at ABC. McKinley went back out on the road with Marvin Gaye, as musical director on his last tour. "That was a bad gig, nearly destroyed many of the people that worked on it. It was just a heavy thing, all the drugs and people around Marvin. One guy committed suicide, open his hotel room one morning to find a pile of coke outside his door, a message from some bad people. No, found it hard to work for awhile after that."
Compared to the 70's the 80's and 90's were farily lean times for McKinley also he split from his wife, Shirley Jones of the Jones Girls. After discussing this the conversation sort of died away. But that wasn't then end of the interview, come conversation. For the next few days he joined me as I went round the city to see other people. First off to see Joe Hunter, were we spent a few hours over some wine, me listening to them reminiscing, and McKinley telling Jo that he had a lot to thank him for in helping him into the industry. Next Popcorn Wylie, they hadn't seen each other for years, so the one time partners sat down to talk about family and the past and I went looking for records in Popcorns basement.
As we come out of his house and get in the car McKinley looks worried, "You know, popcorn shouldn't be like that, he needs to be working, we'll pop back tomorrow with my old keyboard. Next day we go back with the little keyboard he had used when talking to Brian on the phone. I had been curious why it had so much wax on one end of it, so I asked him when we pull up at Popcorn's house. He looks thoughtfully at it, "that's how tuff it got back then, I was living in a place with no electricity, but I still could work, as this is battery power and with a candle on the end, that was all I need. This left me silent, you read all the stories about artist, and McKinley is an artist, going through tough times, but this really gave it a cold reality not normally felt.Once we had finished up with Popcorn, on to what turned out to be a much more warming experience, we go round to see A J Sparks, long time respected session play in Detroit. When he heard McKinley was with me he had made a few calls and by the time we arrive a few people have gathered in his basement, some from his days at Invictus. His arrival is met by lots of hugs and comments like "how many years has it been".
Again talk soon gets back to the old days, at one point McKinley says to the assembled group what was the funkiest tune we cut on Chairman of the Board, it went some thing like this. He plays the opening bars to blank looks alround except me, but I feel a little humble in this group and wait hoping someone will remember, I can't wait any longer "Finders keepers" I shout out, in seconds others have picked up instruments and there before me they are playing the track from memory, note perfect. That would almost be the end of the story, McKinley back home in Detroit amongst friends, chating about the past. But McKinley Jackson isn't one to really look back, he is alway looking for the next project. It took me asking these question for him to think back, I think some of it was fun, but also at times painful.
Today though, his life in Detroit seems a good one, he is working a fair bit for the Holland Brothers, most treat him like some elder statesman. He is working hard to past skills onto the next generation, teaching several times a week at a music tech, and he hasn't lost any of his passion for making soul music. We had half a day in the studio, while he worked on some tracks for Brian and Eddie and at the end of this there was a moment that will live with Malayka for ever. I was sitting with the engineer chating, McKinley and Malayka had gone through to the studio. We could hear a few music passages being played, so we walked through, to find the pair of them sitting side by side at the piano playing duet.
Some sadness has come his way, his son, Hip Hop Giant, Proof of Detroit group D 12 was gunned down early this year outside a city night club. But when we met in October, he was looking fit and full of spirit.
How best do you sum up this mans achievements to date, it's hard for me, as I am a big fan of his work, for me he is one of the very best of that rare breed of muscian, producer and arranger, up there with the likes of Van McCoy and HB Barnum. Over the last few years he and his lovely wife Carol have become good friends, so i'm not impartial. So here a few quotes from some of his Detroit musical peers. "One of the greatest talents to come out of this city", "He is a musical genius, "You're with a legend".
