On the Chris Evans show this morning on Radio 2 at 7.15, the This Day In History segment presented by Kate Humble featuring the details about the Frank Wilson auction and what it raised. Nice to see Motown featured once again on Radio 2.

Fair comment but my point was (and it ain't a dig) is that there are plenty of soul and northern soul lovers who work in advertising, TV and radio, this is now practically an every day occurrence, you only have to watch coronation street for a mention or a record getting played then wait till the next morning for another topic about it.

I think it does in some circumstances.  I was in the co-op yesterday and from nowhere, Road Runner by Jr Walker blasted out on the Co-Op radio, a record I've heard a million times but it sounded utterly fantastic in that setting, an unexpected slice of classic Motown while on a cider buying mission, perfect...

I would guess that any listener, not just a northern soul collector, would find a £25k price tag for a 7" single (and the various reasons behind it) rather fascinating and exciting.

... possibly also a sense of bewilderment, and in some cases thoughts of 'you luck bugger' towards the seller of the record!

to be fair i got silly excited at the local pub. they have that secret dj thing whereby people choose the tunes via an app. the app has its own limited playlists, and if no one selects anything it plays its own playlists. on a number of occasions ive heard exits- got to have money - now that was a surprise!

I agree to a point but some researcher at radio two will be into northern and will have fed him this info. It's not as though this record has escaped media attention in the past with Kenny even appearing on TV with it if I remember rightly.

Mucker, to me you're sounding a bit like the great handbagging unwashed, know about and tolerate NS.

I think in all honesty the majority of non hard core fans know dick.

I think Seagrave has nailed it.

I understand that Ian, but everyone on this site knows all about it. That's why I asked do we seriously get excited about the mere mention of a northern soul record to start a topic about it.

Indeed. Though this was no mere mention. This was a segment! And on Radio 2 as well. I would feel more the way you do if it had of been Solar 0129..

gobsmacked moreso, that its four years passed since it was auctioned, remember the day well.....friday afternoon, on the way back from an expedition to deepest darkest tod and professor tim brown's cellarful of soul...unfotunately, i didn't have 25k to spend...doh! :( but i did get a few tunes

Just thought I'd bump this topic up a bit.

I will offer a 5iver for this over played record that i dont want to hear again

Of course, if we (and promoters!) stuck to the principle of 'original vinyl only' venues, very few of us would think it was overplayed.

Similarly, we wouldn't fear hearing it out too often in the future either. Come to think of it (and this applies to a lot of other rare but bootlegged records too), we might even look forward to it ...

Thought it was a Wedneday ?

Sure it was cos I used to go to the Mecca and on this occasion I gave it a miss and stopped in cos I knew it was gonna be that exciting ...

And trust me ,there's nothing much that will keep me from going to Bingo !

Been in Boston, Lincs quite a bit this year and use the wifi in Cafe Nero. Of all places to hear it, it was the best selection of modern day jazz and Latin ive heard, I started Shazaming while drinking my coffee and every visit was discovering loads of US and Italian jazz from people I'd never heard of on labels i'd never heard of. Are they all like this, never usually go in.
