My brother lives in Dubai and he tells me that Northern Soul nights are now being held at the Wafi Mall in Dubai City each week...up on the roof terrace which I can confirm is a beautiful (if somewhat expensive) setting...... Jim Cafferky Posted June 24, 2013 Share Posted June 24, 2013 Thanks for the tip on the soul night in Dubai - generally hard to find a decent music night for our tastes in this part of the world although we have met quite a few people who are into Northern soul. Just managed to find out some more information from the venue manager The next soul/ northern night will be on Thursday 27 June at Carters Bar in Wafi Mall - this will be the 3rd night and the last night had just over 100 people at the venue. They hope to make a regular night on the last Thursday of the month. Giovanni is the manager at Carters Bar and Olly is the DJ - I don't know many details of the music but Giovanni says it is a combination of Motown and Northern Soul - "bring your own tracks if you like" he said. The DJ is currently looking at finding a set of turntables so that he can play vinyl records but may not have this by this week. We will definitely be giving it a visit with a few friends (Peter and Janet - used to go to the Torch, John and Sally (Wigan Casino) plus a few who are generally soul fans (and anyone else we can ripe into it so that it gets the numbers up). We hope it will be a good night. Anyone else on Soul Source who is planning to go give me a call or say hello if you get there - my number is Dubai 055 280 5649 = Jim mobile. The music faithful are also here. The event is monthly, every last Thursday of the month (so next one is Thursday 27th June) at the Carters Bar, Pyramids at WAFI. Last month was well attended with many out stomping their feet and word is spreading, so even more expected despite the soaring summer temperatures. Here's the info; SOUL OF DUBAI takes place on the last Thursday of the month in Carter's at Wafi City in Dubai. It's a pretty big place, I would guess that we could get around 350 in, at a push and fingers crossed, we will, one day. The last event was on Thursday 27th June, we had an excellent turnout, around 100 turned out again, remember, this is Dubai,,, that was about the same as the MAY event and a massive improvement on our first Soul night in April. I did read in one of the comments that Wafi is rather expensive... well, yes, it can be, but there are great drink promotions at Carter's all the time; Heineken is only 22 Dirhams a pint, go check the prices in other bars and you'll find that you will be paying double that in most places. I had the great pleasure of making an announcement at about 11:30pm last Thursday regarding our Christmas event, which will take place on Thursday 26th December, Boxing Day. The event will be OUTDOORS on the brilliant Wafi rooftop, it can comfortably hold 1,000 people and the guest DJ is,,, The Godfather himself,,, Russ Winstanley, how awesome is that? Ticket prices and details will be announced soon on here and on www.facebook.com/soulofdubai and www.twitter.com/soulofdubai So there you have it, there IS a soul night in Dubai and we need your support. All for now, Ollie. KTF PLEASE NOTE: SOUL OF DUBAI nights will have NO door charge - Only when we are bringing guest DJ's or Artists will a small fee be charged, otherwise it will always be FREE ADMISSION. I knew there were a few guys there who were into it via the gossip from friends of friends. There was also a guy bidding on ebay from Dubai. The northern nights have only been going a few months so early days yet and trying to get known so that crowd builds up. No vinyl at the moment but Ollie is trying to get something arranged with the venue. The musics spiritual home is in the industrial heartlands of Northern England and the big Northern cities in the USA. , It fits there , resonates with the surroundings , wouldnt go if you paid me.
