Funny how rarely the mic is used on other scenes. I reckon some of those Scottish blokes have an advantage because they have such clear diction, certain ladies the same. I think there have been a lot of too obvious reponses. With people confusing awesome records with great DJ'ing (Butch etc).

A good DJ doesn't necessarily have to have the best records. Butch has the best records (these days anyway) and is a competent DJ, but not the best.

The definition of a truly great DJ is one who reads his crowd perfectly and plays to entertain those that are there. Amongst the best DJ's I have witnessed are (in no particular order) - Ian Levine - Mecca times (could have been a real contender ), Richard Searling, Dave Withers, Pat Brady, Steve Whittle - Casino days, Mark Bicknell (when he's not tired & emotional ) and Dave Evison.

Ian Levine by a country mile for me! Pick up those Black Music magazines from the time and see his column for the records he was breaking week in week out.

Also, thought he and Colin Curtis circa 75/76 were so right in what they were doing - although ironically I think Ian himself would disagree now

Ian circa 1972/73,against Butch best part of 3 decades,think Butch gets it,but a big shout for Keb,who was the best when he was around of coarse after undiscovered me

Hhmm..............Ian found so many, many top Northern Soul sounds, it was of

course easier in them days, but he was strictly a floor filler - gets my vote

No, Assembley Rooms was mainly mid 70's they used to get 700 in mid-week !! Clifton Hall was later on... Although the venues did sem to alternate until the Assembley Rooms closed down. First record played at Clifton Hall was probably during the warm up before the wrestling

chris forest is also informative, humourous and also quite political when dj ing, makes a change from the grunts who have the records of the gods but the delivery of an english cricketer.

My favourites were definately Dave Abbott and Steve Csordas when they double-decked for the Southern Soul Movement.

Real corkers were played and I danced incessantly!

Otherwise I really like Ginger - he gets the dancefloor going, Sean Chapman plays some lurverly mid tempo stuff when he hasn't got his disco head on and I really like Mark Bicknell too

Agree. We were all in an environment very much ahead of it's time. The Northern Scene had a real shot in the arm from Alan & Steve's Clifton Hall and Steve's "Winter Gardens" & Bradford.

Right place, right time and we got away with an awesome selection of truly 'across the board' Soul Music.

I'd certainly be in favour of pulling in Robin & Adam for a one off... or even something more regular!

Suggest we discuss at the CLIFTON HALL REUNION when we get a mo!

As for the DJ Poll, couldn't believe that the Searling fella got twice as many votes as me that year!

I used to dj there in 1984 when I was living in Swindon, long drive home sunday night....

Well i can't say who is best DJ when half of the older ones i never seen. Russ Winstanley seems easy to pick as told a legend but i like Andy "smudge" Smith who DJ's locally where i am he seems good.

Paul Donnerlly back in the 70's i believe would have been hard to beat in local area i see why he would be last to DJ at Wirrana save the best still last.

For me and a good few of my mates its was Carl Willingham through the 90s to present day..We still miss him for sure...He was a dj who people would travel to see..God bless Carl Willingham,when he played Teardrops at Cleethorpes for the last time ,one of them moments indeed...

Roger Banks in the mid 80s was the man for us also..I still like to see Roger play now...Would like to see the line up of djs from the Droylsden all niters in Manchester..I think they were the highlight of my time on the soul scene,they saved us at a time when the scene was pretty small..Mr Bicknell and co will go down in history for them all niters...Also Pat Brady in the 80s was another for my crowd. ...My little list is..

That was the thread about dj...I know and have heard many collectors put together a great set but they are just one offs for a small group..My list is for the guys who can bring quality and keep a large floor going..That what a dj was invented for...

These cover my time on the scene from 82 to present day...Many more who have really pricked my ears but not really heard to much from them..Like i said the thread is about djs...I know some boys with records to kill for but they are collectors first and not really djs...I like to see these guys in smaller venues for a crowd that really listens...

Some of the best tunes i have heard over the last year are from Mr Baz Atkinson,only heard this guy play a few times but he really pricked my ears with some different sounds...I think i will get to hear him a little more in the coming year ..

This is a very large part of life for some and its to the grave..Keep your mind and soul together and you won't go far wrong...

Why does every post I've seen your name on become a opportunity to attack someone else. This thread was asking best dj on Northern Scene not who your top pratts are.

Personally Mr Crosdale and Mr Bicknell were always a pleasure to listen to DJing. and their willingness to share their extensive knowlegde without ever making me feel like I shouldn't ask. I can't comment on Chalky.
