With the huge prices that we are seeing on the scene today , has anyone (beside different strokes ) tried this

at their venues ? , playing tunes OVO that have not upset the Bank balance. if so what would be your £25 spot ?.

To add further and to prove a current point of how much the price of a tune is subjective i.e. a once cheapish tune can quite easily go for big bucks, Sam Dees - Soul Sister on the  LoLo label. Now I'm not too sure why people are paying big money for it, might be because it Sam Dees or maybe because of the label (same as Bobby Hill-To The Bitter End ), or it fills the dance floor on todays current scene ?!

 

But its apparently clear that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder",  as a gander at Popsike will let the cat out of the bag....

Its not at all rare ( seen quite a few go on eBay etc...) but obviously in demand as the last buyer paid £703 for a copy....?! Begs to believe but I rest my case, as ever its all down to exposure on the scene, who plays it ( well known DJs ) etc.....on how a record can become big on the scene, sometimes its not just down to refined taste just listening to "Soul Sister" will confirm that I'm afraid

Only a couple of years ago I bought my copy of Buddy Ace - Screaming Please for £30.00, more or less unheard of around here and I got quite a few folk wanting to know who and what?........ from the anorak jotting it down in the notebook he carries around to others wanting to know what to ask for at other venues. It rams any dancefloor today and try picking one up for £30 now.

There`s load out there still, and ive found a few!

I've certainly got no snobbery about cheap records, the point I was making is that a list of good records and a good dj set are two totally different things.

i've only djed at mod and r&b clubs, where price and rarity aren't so important, and where people dont suffer from the strange misconception that 'rare' is a style of music. It's a fairly universal view on those scenes that, however much you spend, you're not going to get better or more authentic than little walter or something, so our quest is just for new material from wherever, not so much a dj dick-waving rarity contest.

however, there's still many things that make an interesting dj set besides price - individuality, novelty etc.

It's got to have some 'wow' moments, which can be one-offs, unique plays, new discoveries and the 'slept-on' records are just one of the necesary ingreidients.

to think that you can do a whole set of records that fall into the 'wow, that's brilliant, i cant believe its ten quid and by ...' catagory, to most people listening, is fanciful, and a bit patronising. A lot of the records suggested are there on youtube or have been played over the years.

in fact, ironically, it would probably take a serious collector to do such a set convincingly, not just by default.

Joe simon 'I got a whole lot of loving' is one of my favourite tunes, but it's all over the place, so if I do a set full of things like that, what is my USP? The ability to put on records everybody has got in a unique order? Not much of a usp. Kind of arrogant to claim to have the 'taste' to do it no?

cant have it all, and it's been far better to have had a relentless search for rarities at the expense of bigger sellers that will always survive anyway than a perpetuation of past success at the expense of the more obscure gems as in mainstream culture.

and looking at the way prices go up on established rare classics, you cant blame folks for trying to get to them first.

Sometimes it seems strange that all those r&b sets I did, I played Howlin wolf maybe once or twice, ray charles the same, muddy waters the same...

fact is though: that djing is largely about the excitement of novelty, otherwise you're just a human jukebox who might easily be replaced by a laptop. It's about the excitement and myth of rarity and obscurity, the buzz of discovery.

Howlin wolf's back catalogue was never going to end up as landfill and you can buy it at motorway services.

So if it gets overlooked for a while, as we find the rarer stuff...oh well.

Anyway, as I said: even though I've tried to justify it, the neglect of common records is a phenomenon of Northern soul djing culture, not one I share, hence why I said you'd get boyuted out for playing that set.

Its nice to hear a cheapie out that you've only heard at home.Played loud over a big system,with like minded folks dancing or nodding ,can change the perception of a cheapie - even if only for a night.

I saw this playlist the other day and in amongst the bigger ticket items were some more freely available 45's.  Worth checking out as one example of just how "cheap" one can go without causing a walkout -

dont know about braving the water Steve, cheap or in expensive and musically fabulous comes easy mate, it's the lowest common denomanator in record collecting...,

And yes, if I picked em they will all generally tail end together nicely on a CD... Pride my self on actually knowing how tempo and music fits together... Only bloody thing I was ever any good at, that and taking pictures....

So if you go to a soul night and there's two rooms, one with Ted Massey, Mick H, Butch, Ady Croasdell and alike playing there top quality tunes and in the other room there are only records of £25 and below being played then you would soon see that price matters.

These list of some great tunes are all well & good but they mean nothing unless dj's will have the b*llocks to play them.Hence the "under £25" nights on occasions appear,price shouldn't mean anything it should be how good but we all know it doesn't. Unfortunately the mind set  of most dj's (& I include myself in this) fall into trying impress with what they have,so the lower priced tunes take a back seat which is a shame but that's the reality?

Played all of those myself within the last couple of years within a set, so have to agree ; I do find people tend not to mention the cheaper ones you play ; but focus on the expensive (perhaps because they are less seldom heard) ; and can only agree with whats been said before about  placing a few in the mix ..................

To be fair and more accurate,the under £25 night at D.S is not the full event, but the back room on the same night as Steve's regular event.

I believe it's the brainchild of Gaz B.

However, the reviews and general consensus of the first one were very good and from the mouths of creditable and passionate punters!

Can I just state that yes we did have an under £25 room in our two room venue, It worked really well and we will hold another on 4th April... Plenty of sounds to play at such an event if you have an ounce of flare and imagination, something that's lacking with some so called djs.... The point was to experience it live and many did and got a surprise indeed.... Maybe someone can link the article / event and it's feedback to go with topic, I can't do it on my phone..

Nailed it there Martyn......nights like these are a blessing ......it helps/makes you play those bloody brilliant tunes that most djs would bypass for the bigger ticket items due to pressure from the floor/management/ego ??? And as a new collector on a budget i can't believe how many out-standing tunes have been by-passed for those reasons (apparently)...More nights like this are needed in my humble opinion !!!

not rocket science, thousands of quality records to be had at a doable (is that a word) price, we're not all top level collectors or dj's, have faith in your own discerning taste, never buy a record you don't like just because it has a price tag attached

Why wouldn't you want to listen to a well put together set of interesting,great dancers that aren't expensive?

Are you saying no cheap sounds are any good or are you saying a set has to have a least a few one off's,mega bucks before the set is any good?

Yes I am Martyn. I have heard some of these sets and even though some of the tunes are brilliant, a full hour of them is frankly terrible. If you lose the floor, you need to get them back, and you can't do that without some big hitters. 

People might come up to you after your set and tell you how much they enjoyed what you played, but if I'm Dj'ing, I want people dancing. Not sat there looking bored and scratching their chins.

I love my big tunes as much as anyone & want a mixed night of tempos,genres etc but to say a set of cheaper sounds is terrible on price alone I can't agree with.

To flip your concern about limiting yourself to cheap tunes alone doesn't that happen the other way round with the more expensive tunes,how many times have we heard expensive tunes played 3 or 4 times a night...........because the dj's have paid a kings ransom for it so is going to play it no matter what?

But lots of records started off as cheapies before they gained exposure and demand.Take for a recent example Irene & The Scotts which is currently on Manships auction and probably set to reach a big price.Five years ago i bought it for a tenner so back then it would make it into a cheapies set.How can you get excited about a record just because of its price tag.

A Good set is one that gets you dancing and entertains you simple as that.You could hear a string of mega bucks played out oldies and feel bored until an unfamiliar or underplayed record gets you back on the floor.It doesnt have to be a high price record that fills the floor.

I must admit struggling to find recent interesting record purchases for under £25 and all the above records were obtained from the USA.

A quick run through my modest box of vinyl and most of the lower priced records tend to be over £25 so I can relate to your approach about head lifting tunes costing more.

i put that vontastics tune on a mix cd for a british friend who knows a bit about soul (more 70s), but he'd never heard it and it blew his mind. there was a dealer on eBay named "headbonedaddy" had loads of deadstock of them for like 10 USD. great disc.

So many big ticket sets are simply boring now as far too many DJ's seem to have a lot of them and they've been hammered in many cases.  There is a genuine lack of imagination in the mainstream soul scene with both DJ's afraid to take a chance for the fear of not getting another booking and far too many promoters happy to sit back and not buck the status quo.

 

As said the majority of today's big money records started off cheap rising in price as demand rose.  Today's cheapie tomorrows expensive 45? 

 

But there are many big ticket items that if they were a tenner they wouldn't get a second play as many simply lack quality as well.

 

I don't see a problem with the occasional nights like this where DJ's are encouraged to use some imagination and you never know you just might enjoy it?
