I don't know what made me think of this but i thought i'd start a thread to try to collect some of the annoying things / cliches that lazy, clueless media types say when they turn their attention to northern soul....

To kick things off, the oft-repeated phrase 'the northern soul movement' is always worth a cringe. It's the 'movement' bit... Makes it sound like The Young Conservatives Movement or a branch of the Church of England or something...

Flipping, 'movement' indeed!!! Clueless!

Doesn't wind me up but I always smile when I see it referred to as a "youth cult'. Have you seen the state of some of those youths?

"Bowel" springs to mind with the word movement !!

"Northern Soul was a cult back in the 70s but is now back" is annoying, made worse when that myth is supported by some commentators involved in the scene at that time and now back with a big break of a decade or two. Insulting to the Djs, promoters and importantly punters who carried on I think.

I'll tell you hat is annoying, Lisa Tarbuck played the Pointer Sisters - send him back on Radio 2 tonight as I was driving home. I was amazed. Then what does she do? Fades it out for the six o'clock news.

The TV programs that start with film of the drab industrial North smoking chimneys and all. Then we are told that this was our escape from humdrum existence. Then to stereotype us all as having no life apart from northern soul is grating and condescending to say the least. It was fabulous but there was football, the pub, girls, family.....

It's not just the media's fault. I've seen some horrific stuff on Facebook and on other sites produced by so-called 'soulies' that make Northern Soul look like a complete joke. So much so that I wonder whether I even want to tell people I'm into it at all any more. There are plenty actually on the scene doing damage without the media getting involved, in fact if the media reported everything we'd be even more of a laughing stock. Just be thankful half the stuff never gets out.

Is my assessment of Media influence reasonable?

The mainstream media is loaded with boring, agenda fuelled assholes.

Sadly some dickheads on this scene court publicity and the products published from those encounters is what you expect when a dickhead meets with an asshole!

Therefore, anything the mainstream media publish about the scene is a product of the afore mentioned union and not worth my time or effort reading or listening to. 

Whenever I hear/see the words Northern Soul in the media  its time to go to my imaginary potting shed and polish me shoes.

I'm on a few and I've always accepted I have limited knowledge on records, but even I sometimes come across as bit of an authority, which takes some doing

A lot of the media seem to think n. Soul started in the 70s, always call it a 70, s craze that started at wigan.

About 15/16 years ago a local radio DJ asked me to play some Northern Soul in his predominantely Indie Rock show. After a few tunes he asked me live on air why I was listening to this kind of music, it's "dull and sends him to sleep". Now that was annoying....
