Posted October 24, 200618 yr Followed many of the debates on here with great interest and clearly what is one person's 'played out oldlie' is not so for another. What is also clear is that what is being played in one area might be a 'poo' (sorry ) elsewhere. So, what are the present 'played out oldies' for you? Mine would be (and not to say they arn't great records): Better Use Your Dead - Little Anthony & The Imperials. You Don't Love Me - Epitome of Sound. One of these two seems to be played each time I go out! Not looking to start any sort of debate just interested to see if what is new to me etc.is someone else's poo? KTF. Drew.
October 24, 200618 yr Lucky chap - what a great record Can't remember when I last heard it out - although it gets a regular play on my personal squawk box. It really is a fantastic track isn't it. I love the instrumental as well, you can hear loads of orchestration in there which is drowned out on the vocal version.
October 24, 200618 yr i do hope i'v not upset 5.OUL dendog dendog you could not upset me pal some one made a statment regarding soulies this is about records not venues and soulies 5.OUL Edited October 24, 200618 yr by 5.OUL
October 24, 200618 yr Author Lucky chap - what a great record Can't remember when I last heard it out - although it gets a regular play on my personal squawk box. I agree Rich. Lucky To Be Loved is a fantastic record and I wasn't stating that it is for me 'played out' only that from that list it was the one I had heard 'out' most. Also think that your last played clip on here (You Didn't Have To Leave) is a fantastic record. KTF. Drew.

October 24, 200618 yr Modern, crossover, you tell me ?? but in my youth you would not get Pressure or Party Time Man, Third Window & so on even though they are good tunes elitism and sectarianism donnt let us get teco Forget the pidgeon holes altogether good SOUL is good SOUL whenever it was recorded. The fact is it is harder and harder to find tunes that are genuinely not known on the scene. This has lead records from both earlier and later being played on the scene. If you think about it the alternative was tried and the Casino namely expaning what gets played except they didn't expand into the 50's and 70's ( I know there are notable exceptions ) they expanded away from soul music. I know I'd rather here 50's or even up to new released soul than some of the pop dross that surfaced at Wigan. People should worry less about playing things they believe in even if they are cheap / easy to find rather than not being brave enough and thinking well if it's worth X hundred pounds my credibility cannot be a risk. I think on the original point what is 'played out' really does depend on where you go. It's within the last few weeks that people were saying on here that the Ad Libs - Johhny My Boy is hardly ever played. In some parts of the North West it was hammered couple of years ago. Some of top three candidates for over played in need of a rest oldies would be Just a Little Misunderstanding One Wonderful Moment Do I Love You These are not BAD records but would benefit from not being played for 5 years or so perhaps then I could get the tingle down my spine again when I heard them. (maybe not though they may have been killed off altogether for me at least) Not an oldie but I am sick of hearing Somethings Wrong - Chris Clark every time I go out anywhere. P.S. I don't know why I get involved in these discussions its almost impossible to get the point over effectively on a forum and people are always so entranched anyway.

October 24, 200618 yr just to keep this going,,,,,, in the early days( pre Wigan) , when t'Torch n t'Wheel were on, wasn't nearly everything played only a few years old?( shock, horror,,newie,,modern even?). Discuss away.............Kev.

October 24, 200618 yr the amount of over played oldies can be only overcome mathmaticaly with this equation.the amount of over played oldies must be directly proportional to the amount of self administerd medicine. med=tunes you've heard to many times

Perhaps they are recognisable by the outfits they wear (OOPS! Thats for another thread) I don't understand what you're trying to say here. That there's no such thing as an oldie because all records are old? If someone asked me to name them a 100 northern oldies I could do it off the top of my head in 2 or 3 minutes and not one would have been made after 1970 and not one would have been first played after 1980. Everybody knows whats meant by northern oldies. Just because a record is 'not of the present day' doesn't make it an oldie in the Northern Soul sense of the term.
October 24, 200618 yr One of the joys of not being in to Northern for as long as most of you lot is that some of them overplayed out of fashion oldies is that they are new to me...
October 24, 200618 yr Isn't there a book about this very topic? Think it's called "The Northern Soul Top 500"

October 24, 200618 yr I'm intrigued enough to ask Steve, you have a one hour spot 11pm at the infamous Right Track Club Peterborough, 300+ in, go on what would YOU play??? Well has he answered this qustion yet then....lol Mark Bicknell.
October 24, 200618 yr Northern/Rare Soul was a scene that played unknown records by unknown artists by DJ's who would ONLY play such records anyway to an up for it crowd.....................what happened to this ethos, surely we should all be striving to play or hear the next unknown potential monster/classic if we are keeping true to the original origins of the NS scene ??? . Russ
October 25, 200618 yr I hear loads of same old tunes when i go out but to me i enjoy it and i always hear new tunes everytime i do not know. i also notice certain songs Do I Love you which has not been played out locally for some time so there are times you don't hear tunes anymore I am gonna say something now you might be shocked or think god help me but i said before why we never get Dobie Gray - Out On The Floor played anymore (that is one of my all time fav tunes) i guess people think it sounds lame now and wouldn't fit in with the rest of Northern soul

October 25, 200618 yr What is an oldie? Does it not depend on A) how old you yourself are what clubs you attended when you were young C) you have been over exposed to particular tunes Is George Pepp an oldie because i myself have heard it played for 15 years or more? What is an oldie? Are they tunes which to one degree or another have been overplayed at sometime in the past? are they crap tunes? Is there a thing where rare oldies are ok but common oldies are not? Are you allowed to listen to oldies on the same home made cd with newies? How are you supposed to tell the difference between these things if you are young? Are collectors and DJS allowed to own both oldies and newies? Personally there are loads of tunes that i have heard for years which i love and there are loads of tunes that i don't! I loved Doug Banks back in the 80s but now i can not stand it! the intro...the chorus...i hate it! Kurt Harris is another one, back in 85 or so i loved it, but i cant stand the song now, because i have heard it a million times! It is the same record - it has not changed......my view of it has! Now Ray Pollards The Drifter Jackie Edwards I feel so bad, Forston and Scott, Carla Thomas, Johnny Maestro,Seven Souls, Cecil Washington, Kell Osbourne etc...etc... have all been hammered over the years!! The tunes have not changed - its just our own interpretation of them? Where you heard them, and how old you are! Me - i have only just left my 20s so all this sort of oldies banter is absurd ! Now for my top overplayed crap oldies and newies Chandlers - Your love makes me lonley - colsoul (do we have to listen to this guy droning on again?) Joannie Sommers - Dont pity me - WB (one more time and i will explode!) Don Gardener - Cheating kind - Sedgrick - ( It WAS a crap record - thats why it is rare) Betty Turner - The winds kept laughing - Cresecnt (no....not again!!) LB Parker -Please keep away from me - Veep - (for the 100000s time..no..please!) I could go on for days!...... are these newies that i dont like or oldies?

October 25, 200618 yr I mentioned on another topic on here recently that a favourite tune of mine is, Ruby Andrews - Just loving you, and someone kindly posted in no uncertain words that it was an overplayed piece of shite, Was that me? If not, can I just say that IMHO, that is the the most overplayed, dreary piece of background music ever played on the scene?
October 25, 200618 yr Here is some for the bonfire Nov 5th they will be well burnt out font=Times]Driza-Bone - Rear Love dendog Is this another that's big with all E midlands soulies.... or just the arse bandits amongst them??
October 25, 200618 yr sorry just had to answer this one, and no disrespect to any dj, promoters etc right, got my cd box, bootlegs, vinyl carvers, reissues, etc plus my one and only original - interplay on orange rca yes ready to go, need say no more but the 300+ crowd love it........theres your answer paul russ ps, before anyone asks its a joke regards interplay, original etc Very good Rus! Be even funnier if if one of your co-promoters wasn't inclined to play the odd vinyl-carvers piece himself!
October 25, 200618 yr What gets my goat is the same oldies played more than once in the same night. I stopped going to King Georges at Blackburn when I'm sure Bobby Hebb Love Love Love was played 3 times in the main room. Also on another theme the last 2 venues I've been to I've heard Gimme Some Lovin - Spencer Davies, whats that all about.
October 25, 200618 yr One of the joys of not being in to Northern for as long as most of you lot is that some of them overplayed out of fashion oldies is that they are new to me... I have to agree with mischief here...... Only recently been listening to the music and have to agree they may be oldies to some but are 'new ' to others like me..............
October 25, 200618 yr sharon your knocking Remember if you cant say something nice There is a difference between having an opinion that may be different from others and 'Saying something nice' If we all said 'something nice' all the time wouldn't the world be such a boring, monotonous, dreary, pathetic, sad, hum-drum, pathetic, run of the mill, predictable etc. etc. place?? I'm not knocking (?) Just stating a very clear fact. Anyway : what is a 'soulie'??
October 25, 200618 yr I'm not knocking (?) Just stating a very clear fact. Anyway : what is a 'soulie'?? Some one who 'thinks' they are into northern, because they go to the local oldies night dressed as they have been since 1976? and proberly never even attended wigan?

How many times do we here of these places that repeat tunes all the time .My freind said of these places "spoon fed a diet of overplayed shite by promoters who just don't care" ..Vote with your feet, its the only way...I think more folk should have word with the promoter or the dj on the night and ask them why,see what answer they give before you poke them in the eye ... At the end of the day we see these places still full every month and so it seems a lot of people don't care about repeats and djs who have played the same set every month ,i would not want that but a lot do,plenty choice every week for all...Lets not get too frumpy about this,as the song says "you go your way and i'll go mine".. peace and luv.....Rev Kenny Lynch.. x

October 25, 200618 yr Some one who 'thinks' they are into northern, because they go to the local oldies night dressed as they have been since 1976? and proberly never even attended wigan? ============= Sterotypical bollox, which doesn't even make me laugh anymore. Baz, you don't even go to these sort of nights (or rarely) so how come you see so many of these people dressed up in bags and vests? One of the things that used to signify a soulie was not being judgemental, something sadly lacking in some of the younger soulies Now I guess you're going to say it was a tongue in cheek comment, but you do say it at every given opportunity, and often imply its a significant reason younger people don't get into the scene, which is also absolute tosh IMO. Winnie:-)

It's funny but I said this to Davina about 2 weeks back, we went to the shops and I was wearing a pair of Levis, a white polo shirt under a black v neck jumper and I realised I was wearing exactly the same clothes that I wore 30 years ago! So what's wrong with dressing like that eh?

October 25, 200618 yr just a thought. If these oldies arent played out. What is the point of going? Like wow, thats like if a tree falls in an empty wood does it make a noise? I suppose it would if it fell on a bear trying to take a tom tit, if they do that in woods. There once was a played out oldie That didn't get played out anymore. To some people it was a classic, To others a bore, But to discuss it makes most people snore. I may enter that in the TLS poetry competition.

Followed many of the debates on here with great interest and clearly what is one person's 'played out oldlie' is not so for another.
What is also clear is that what is being played in one area might be a 'poo' (sorry
) elsewhere.
So, what are the present 'played out oldies' for you?
Mine would be (and not to say they arn't great records):
Better Use Your Dead - Little Anthony & The Imperials.
You Don't Love Me - Epitome of Sound.
One of these two seems to be played each time I go out!
Not looking to start any sort of debate just interested to see if what is new to me etc.is someone else's poo?
KTF.
