Soulsmith
Just coming back on a few points raised earlier in the debate. I didn't state that I wanted the Dome to be changed into an oldies venue! The somewhat vague term 'top notch Northern Soul' was deliberately used. I hope thats what the new line of DJs are going to play. A lot of people on this site are well into their rare soul, that's fair enough. The majority of fee paying customers out there are generally more open minded and into a broader cross section of Northern Soul. Also coming back on another point mentioned by Stuart that 'The Capitol Soul Club was a rare sixties soul club'......the banner at the top of the web site clearly states "Northern Soul" If they'd played a bit more Northern Soul and a bit less RnB and super rare stuff, I dont think we'd be having this debate. The people on here are into everything, from oldies to newies, modern, crossover, R&B and funk. Much more than the majority of fee paying customers who are IMO into the top 200 same old same and thats one of the reasons the Dome is closing IMO cause the last time I went apart from Mick H most of the stuff was oldies. Pete S
But out of interest wasn't Nige Brown not only responsible for playing that awful Nino Tempo thing but also one of the people DJing with one of the sounds that Gavin Stearn nicked at the Crossfire held at The Rocket? link 1) Loads of people were playing the Nino Tempo record including Terry Davies. Nige Brown is a bloody good dj and a nice bloke to boot. Think he uses poncy moisturiser though. 2) Having heard the tapes of that event, I didn't hear anything worth going to the trouble of making a dub of and playing somewhere else apart from the Checkerboard thing and thats come out on the 100 club record anyway Not like you to shit-stir Stuart Link to comment

I used to go to Wigan to hear records I couldn't hear locally - when the oldies started to take over, what was the point of going, when half the records were just revivals? That's how I feel about NS events nowadays, it should still be there to introduce quality 60's newies, though I only go for the social side and not the music anymore BECAUSE IT'S NOT THAT IMPORTANT TO ME NOW, but I'd like to hear a 50/50 split of oldies and rarer items, and no modern or 70's whatsoever. Soulsmith
Glad to be of help, here goes. I think an elitist is someone who believes in rule by an elite group The definition of elitism is a little more worrying: The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources. If you are happy with your description of yourself, then no need to apologise. Link to comment

If you are happy with your description of yourself, then no need to apologise. link elitism (oxford english dictionary) - noun 1 the belief that a society or system should be run by an elite. 2 the superior attitude or behaviour associated with an elite I really don't give a monkey what anyone thinks about me to be honest and I'm certainly not asking for an apology. If you think of me as any of the above then you certainly don't know me. Certainly don't perceive myself to be superior to anyone. As far as I'm aware I'm working class and have no social status, I'm not an intellect and as for financial resources that puts me at the bottom of the ladder I don't think either IMO that the above covers the desire to listen to something different so maybe we should come up with another word and or description Link to comment

Soulsmith
Def agree with Winnie here. The Dome needs membership cards. Otherwise it'll just be a late night drinking club for people in N. London. The cosequences are obvious. Link to comment
Winnie :-)
correct me if I am wrong but chalky called himself an elitist!!!! And the following post was just to clarify what chalky did indeed mean about himself ============= Nini, The first post to mention elitism was number 60, which was from soulsmith, and he said that Chalky was elitist and dismissive. Chalky replied that if wanting to hear something other than run for cover, or constellations was elitist then so be it. So he didn't actually say he was an elitist....and of course I know we don't think he is anyway. Winnie:-) Link to comment
